Overview

SMSBOX handles bulk and scheduled SMS as well as appointment reminders, webshop updates, monitoring alerts and two-factor authentication. WhatsApp Business messages, voice calls and email-to-SMS extend it beyond text campaigns, while inbound SMS and delivery reports support two-way workflows.

The service says it reaches more than 200 countries and has direct operator connections in Belgium and the Netherlands. That makes it relevant to businesses messaging across borders, with a particular local foothold in those two markets. Credits expire after one year, and messages longer than 160 GSM-7 or 70 Unicode characters count as multiple SMS, so message length directly affects usage.

Key features

The web dashboard includes Excel contact imports, personalization tags, scheduled sending and real-time result tracking. It gives staff a way to manage campaigns without building an integration, but free dashboard access does not make sending free: messages are charged per use, from €0.06 per SMS to arbitrary numbers.

The REST API supports sending and receiving SMS, OTP verification, HLR number validation, voice messages, inbound webhooks and delivery reports. That breadth makes SMSBOX a better fit for software-connected alerts and authentication than a dashboard-only campaign tool. Contact management and two-way messaging are also supported.

The maker lists more than 50 direct integrations and over 6,000 apps through Zapier, including WordPress, WooCommerce, Microsoft Teams and Azure/Entra ID. For teams already using those services, the connectors can reduce the work of linking messaging to existing processes.

JAAN says its servers and stored data are in Belgian data centers in the EU and under GDPR, with a data processing agreement available on request. It also states a 99.99% uptime guarantee, backed by redundant Belgian infrastructure, automatic failover and ongoing monitoring. Technical support is available by phone, contact form or email.

Pricing

SMSBOX has no expiring trial, but the free allowance is for testing only: the account includes eight one-off credits that can be sent to the account holder’s verified number. Sending to arbitrary numbers costs from €0.06 per SMS. This is enough to try the service, not to run a free campaign.

250 Starter credits — 24.75 EUR per once: 250 usage-based credits for SMS, voice and WhatsApp, at € 0.099 per credit. Credits last one year. It suits a small, occasional workload, but recurring use requires further purchases.
Toll-Free Number US/Canada (+1) — 5.00 EUR per month: Required for SMS to the US, with a three-month minimum term. Prices exclude 21% VAT.
Virtual NL number — 25.00 EUR per month; Virtual BE number — 25.00 EUR per month: Each supports receiving and sending local SMS traffic. Receiving is free up to 1,000 SMS per month, then costs 0.15 credit per message. Both have a three-month minimum term and exclude 21% VAT.
SIM/MFA hosting — 33.25 EUR per month: Per SIM card, receiving only, with incoming texts accessible in the dashboard or by webhook. The minimum term is 12 months; prices exclude 21% VAT.
SIM hosting — receiving — 41.58 EUR per month: Per SIM card for receiving-only M2M or business communication. The minimum term is 12 months; prices exclude 21% VAT.
SIM hosting — receiving + sending — 74.92 EUR per month: Per SIM card for two-way communication, with each SMS sent costing 0.25 credit. The minimum term is 12 months; prices exclude 21% VAT.

The test credits are the lowest-cost way to check the service, while the 250-credit purchase is a modest entry for real traffic. Number and SIM plans address specific receiving or routing needs, but their minimum commitments make them a poor fit for a short-term project. The one-year credit expiry and per-message charging also matter when estimating a low-volume account’s total cost.

Platforms

SMSBOX is available through a web dashboard, API and Windows. The dashboard suits manual campaign work; API access is the more relevant route for automated sending, inbound processing and delivery tracking.

Who it's for

SMSBOX is a sensible choice for businesses that need both outgoing and incoming messages, OTP verification, operational alerts or scheduled customer communications. Its API, webhooks and integrations are useful when messages must connect to business software, while local operator connections and virtual numbers make it especially pertinent to Belgian and Dutch traffic.

It is less compelling for senders seeking a substantial free allowance, flexible short-term number hosting or credits that remain available indefinitely. The test allowance is limited to verified-number testing, and several number and SIM options require multi-month commitments.

Pros and cons

Pro: The API combines outbound and inbound SMS, OTP checks, HLR validation, webhooks and delivery reports, supporting application workflows beyond simple bulk sending.
Pro: Dashboard access costs nothing, and eight test credits let users try sending to a verified number before paying for traffic.
Pro: Belgian data hosting, a stated 99.99% uptime guarantee and direct operator connections in Belgium and the Netherlands are useful assurances for businesses prioritizing local infrastructure.
Con: Arbitrary-number sending is paid per use, and the free credits cannot be used for a general campaign.
Con: Credits expire after one year, while longer messages consume multiple SMS, which can complicate usage budgeting.
Con: Number and SIM plans carry minimum terms of three or 12 months, limiting flexibility for temporary needs.

Alternatives

Browse the SMS Gateway Software category to compare other options. Choose Android SMS Gateway if a freemium service with a free plan, Android support and a lifetime allowance of 300 SMS on one device suits the job better. Messente is another paid API and web option, with SMS, WhatsApp and Viber access and unlimited accounts on its Essential plan.

simhook offers a free tier capped at 30 messages a day and 500 a month, as well as a self-hosted option. Consider Telerivet for its free allowance of 50 messages a day, 50 stored contacts and two automated services. Textmagic is a paid web, Android and iOS alternative with a free trial and prepaid messaging whose rates vary by destination.

OpenVox SMS Gateway offers a free version for getting started. Clickatell SMS API provides a prepaid, pay-as-you-go option with message prices varying by destination and type, plus an enterprise Connect plan. Bird Verify may suit verification needs: its plan includes verification, with charges for the channel messages sent.

Verdict

SMSBOX is best for businesses that need an API-capable messaging service with inbound and outbound traffic, verification, delivery tracking and practical local options in Belgium or the Netherlands. Its strongest reason to choose it is the combination of dashboard, API and multiple messaging channels; its clearest reason to look elsewhere is the limited free test allowance, expiring credits and committed number-hosting plans.
