Overview

Founded in 2013 and headquartered in Tallinn, Estonia, Messente serves businesses through a web dashboard and APIs. Its Omnichannel API can send and receive SMS, WhatsApp and Viber messages; the company also lists RCS as a channel. Messente says it can deliver SMS to more than 197 countries through partnerships with close to 1,000 mobile operators. That reach is useful for services with an international audience, while the actual plan and message costs deserve close attention before committing.

The platform extends beyond outbound messaging. Verigator handles one-time passwords, and a phone-number lookup API uses HLR checks to assess whether mobile numbers are active. These related tools make Messente more compelling for teams consolidating messaging and verification workflows than for buyers who only need a basic SMS sender.

Key features

The API supports two-way SMS and inbound webhooks, and short codes are supported. SDK languages include Python, Node, PHP, Java, Ruby and .NET. Those options give development teams several ways to connect existing services, while Zapier and native integrations with Salesforce, Optimove, user.com and SalesManago can help link messaging to business workflows.

Messaging controls include custom validity times, traffic priority, GSM-friendly character replacement and an option to hide message content from Messente. These are practical controls for businesses managing delivery behavior, message length or sensitive content. Security provisions include GDPR, DORA and ISO 27001:2022 compliance, data hosting in Germany and Finland, Google OAuth SSO, configurable message retention, IP whitelisting for API keys and multi-factor authentication. SCIM is not supported, which may matter to organizations that require that user-provisioning standard.

Pricing

Messente has a free plan, but its paid offering spans multiple products and pricing structures. The core Essential, Professional and Enterprise plans have custom pricing. Essential includes SMS, WhatsApp and Viber access, dashboard and API access, basic support and onboarding, and unlimited accounts. Professional adds advanced analytics, premium support and onboarding, a dedicated account manager and RCS. Enterprise is aimed at organizations needing custom SLAs and reporting, a dedicated success team and integrations, a technical account manager, and quarterly business reviews. The progression is clear, but buyers must request pricing to compare the tiers.

Pay-As-You-Go has no monthly fees and charges for messages sent; it includes full channel access to Viber, WhatsApp and RCS, basic support and onboarding. It is described as a fit for teams starting with SMS. A separate Pay as you go plan lists one account or a 25K-message-per-month minimum alternative, so teams should confirm which terms apply to their purchase. The Commitment plan uses committed volume and terms apply; it offers the lowest price per message on committed volume, full channel access and dedicated support with an Account Manager. It is positioned for businesses scaling beyond Pay-As-You-Go, but committed volume makes it a less natural starting point for uncertain or low usage.

Viber Business and WhatsApp Business each show 0.00 EUR per once, with a price from 0.001€ and one global registration; both include branded images and buttons. Number Lookup costs 199.00 EUR per month, plus a 0.002€ charge per number. Its monthly fee and per-number charge make it best suited to teams with a defined lookup need and budget.

Platforms

Messente is available on the web and through APIs. Toll-free numbers are supported. Its SDK coverage spans six languages, making it a reasonable option for development teams building messaging into applications rather than relying solely on a dashboard.

Who it's for

Messente is a strong fit for businesses sending messages across markets or channels, and for teams that also need OTP delivery or mobile-number checks. It is particularly relevant where API access, integrations, delivery controls and security provisions are part of the buying decision. Organizations seeking a straightforward, transparently priced SMS tool may prefer a narrower alternative, while enterprises can weigh the Commitment or Enterprise offers against their volumes and support needs.

Pros and cons

Pros: SMS, WhatsApp and Viber sending and receiving, with RCS also available, support multi-channel messaging in one platform.
Pros: OTP, HLR number lookup, webhooks, short codes and a broad SDK selection cover several common messaging workflows.
Pros: International SMS reach, business integrations and a substantial set of security controls suit larger or cross-border operations.
Cons: Custom pricing across core plans makes tier-to-tier cost comparisons difficult before requesting a quote.
Cons: The Commitment plan depends on committed volume, which may not suit teams with variable demand.
Cons: Number Lookup adds both a 199.00 EUR monthly fee and a per-number charge, so it may be excessive for occasional checks.

Alternatives

For buyers comparing providers, the SMS Gateway Software and Transactional SMS Software directories are useful starting points. SMSBOX is worth considering for its toll-free number option and one-off test credits, while Android SMS Gateway offers a free plan capped at 300 lifetime SMS on one Android device. simhook suits readers interested in a free, self-hosted option, and Telerivet provides a free tier capped at 50 messages per day. Textmagic may suit buyers who want a free trial and SMS rates that vary by destination; OpenVox SMS Gateway offers a free gateway version for getting started. Clickatell SMS API has a prepaid option with outgoing message costs varying by destination and message type. Jasmin SMS Gateway is the alternative to consider for an open-source gateway, noting that its web backend is under a commercial license.

Verdict

Choose Messente if your business needs international, multi-channel messaging with API integration and adjacent OTP or number-lookup capabilities. Its strongest case is the combination of channel breadth, workflow options and security controls. Look elsewhere if transparent pricing, a low-cost entry point or a self-hosted gateway matters more than that breadth.
