Overview

FreeEed is an eDiscovery tool for teams that need to search and process large document collections, particularly in legal review, enterprise search, or forensic investigation. Its blend of local deployment and broad export formats is useful when documents must stay in the organization’s environment; the 1 GB ceiling and missing production features make the free edition a limited starting point rather than a complete review workflow.

It extracts text and metadata, uses OCR, and supports predictive coding. The plans page names common eDiscovery inputs such as PST, MSG, and EML email, DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX files, PDFs, images, and ZIP archives. For handoff, FreeEed can produce EDRM XML load files, Concordance DAT files, and native exports compatible with Relativity, Nuix, and other platforms.

FreeEed is designed for large volumes across data centers, multi-cloud environments, and local networks. Local deployment keeps documents in the user’s environment, while SSL encrypts data in transit. Windows, Mac, and Linux installers are offered, alongside VirtualBox and Amazon AWS support.

Key features

Search and processing: Full-text search, text and metadata extraction, and OCR help make mixed-format collections searchable. OCR is available even in Community Edition, but its 1 GB quota sharply limits the size of a free matter set.
Review assistance: Professional adds AI Advisor, PII detection, and Matter Summary. These tools are relevant to teams seeking more than basic indexing; they are absent from the free edition.
Matter workflow and production: Professional includes custodian management and production-ready export, addressing tasks the Community Edition does not cover. Predictive coding is also a listed capability.
Export and deployment: EDRM XML, Concordance DAT, and native-file exports support handoff to other review platforms. Local deployment may suit organizations that need to keep documents within their own environment.

Downloads include native installers and a portable ZIP pack for any operating system. Daily builds are marked unstable and may contain bugs, so they are a poor choice for dependable production work.

Pricing

Community Edition — 0.00 USD per free (billed $0 /forever) allows unlimited matters within 1 GB and includes full-text search and OCR. It suits small-scale evaluation or collections that fit the cap, but excludes PII detection, AI Advisor, Matter Summary, and production-ready export. Those omissions make it a poor fit for a complete production workflow.

FreeEed Professional — 50.00 USD per month (billed $50 /mo) includes OCR, full-text search, AI Advisor, PII Detection, Matter Summary, Custodian Management, and production-ready export. A 30-day free trial is offered. It is the clearest fit for teams that need these review and export functions without moving to an enterprise arrangement.

Enterprise — custom pricing includes large-scale deployments, custom integrations, dedicated SLA-backed support, on-premise or cloud deployment, and security and compliance options. SOC 2, HIPAA, and FedRAMP readiness are listed. This plan fits organizations that need those deployment, integration, or support provisions; teams should expect to discuss pricing rather than select a published rate.

Platforms

FreeEed supports Windows, Mac, Linux, VirtualBox, and Amazon AWS cloud, and offers native installers for Windows, Mac, and Linux. The portable ZIP option spans operating systems. These choices make it relevant to teams working across local infrastructure and cloud environments, though it is not presented as a mobile product.

Who it's for

FreeEed is best suited to legal and investigation teams processing document collections, and to enterprises looking for search across large volumes in data centers, cloud environments, or local networks. Community Edition can cover a modest collection where the 1 GB limit and absent production features are acceptable. Professional is the more practical choice when AI Advisor, PII detection, matter summaries, custodian management, and production-ready export matter. Organizations requiring custom integrations, dedicated SLA-backed support, or compliance options should consider Enterprise.

Pros and cons

Pro: OCR, full-text search, and multiple production formats address both document discovery and handoff to downstream review platforms.
Pro: Local deployment keeps documents in the user’s environment, with SSL encryption for data in transit.
Pro: A free edition and a 30-day Professional trial provide ways to assess the product before paying.
Con: Community Edition stops at 1 GB and lacks several AI, PII, matter-management, and production features, limiting its value for larger or production-focused matters.
Con: Enterprise pricing is custom, so organizations needing its integrations, support, or compliance options must request a quote.

Alternatives

Lexbe eDiscovery Platform is a paid alternative with usage-based hosting priced by uploaded and hosted data volume, and unlimited users; consider it when those hosting terms fit better than FreeEed’s fixed Professional monthly price.
Intella is a paid Windows and web option with a free trial. Its Intella 100 plan is for a single user, up to 100 GB ESI, and up to two viewers; Intella Pro is for a single user handling ESI over 250 GB with no case-size limit. Consider it when those case-size and viewer terms match the work.
Knovos Discovery offers custom-priced enterprise agreements, with possible discounts for multi-year commitments, dedicated account management, and priority feature development. It may suit high-volume ALSPs or enterprises seeking that arrangement.
RelativityOne offers flexible licensing with pay-as-you-go or one- or three-year commitments; AI capabilities are included with committed data volume. Consider it when those licensing options suit the deployment.
Casepoint eDiscovery has tailored pricing based on selected applications and use cases, with no charge for products not used. It may fit teams seeking that application-based pricing approach.
Epiq Discover offers flat-rate, per-gigabyte transactional, or subscription pricing.
Rational Review offers fixed-fee project pricing, all-in hosting rates, full feature access, no user limits, and no long-term commitments. Consider it when project-based terms and unlimited users are priorities.
Sightline by Consilio is another paid alternative.

Verdict

Choose FreeEed if your eDiscovery work benefits from local deployment, OCR, searchable document collections, and exports into established review platforms. Professional is the practical choice for teams needing production-ready export and its additional review tools. Look elsewhere if the 1 GB free cap is too restrictive and the Professional feature set or custom-priced Enterprise plan does not match your needs.
