Overview

FOG captures and deploys Windows, Mac OSX, and Linux distributions, with hardware-independent images designed for use across different computer models. It also supports remote management when the FOG server is publicly reachable. That reach makes FOG useful beyond one-time cloning, but it also puts server configuration and exposure on the administrator’s shoulders.

Key features

Network imaging and multi-site deployment

FOG recommends configuring client computers to PXE boot first, so imaging tasks can be sent over the network rather than requiring visits to each machine. Multi-site installations are supported too. Together, these features favor planned rollouts across a fleet or multiple locations; for occasional imaging of one computer, the server and boot configuration may be more work than the job warrants.

Client management

The FOG Client supports host registration, hostname changes, scheduled power management, snapin installation, and user tracking. These tools give administrators ways to maintain enrolled machines between imaging jobs. The client is documented for Windows, Linux, and OSX, but Linux clients lack the FOG Tray, Active Directory joining, and PrinterManager. Organizations that depend on those functions should plan around Windows or OSX clients, or choose another tool for Linux endpoints.

Security and support

Client-server communication uses public-key infrastructure and AES-256 encryption after an RSA-4096 key exchange. Encryption is a useful safeguard, not a substitute for securing the deployment: FOG’s security guidance also recommends firewall rules and protection for the MySQL database and captured image directory. Community forums are the recommended support route, alongside a wiki and IRC channel; forum questions are often answered within an hour, with developers and moderators present daily.

Pricing

FOG Project costs 0.00 USD per free, with free commercial use and free community support. There are no paid tiers to trade off against the core offering, making it a practical option for organizations willing to provide their own Linux server and administration. The cost advantage comes with operational responsibilities rather than a hosted deployment.

Platforms

The FOG server runs only on Linux; recommended server-oriented LTS choices include Ubuntu, Debian, Rocky Linux, and AlmaLinux. The client supports Windows, Linux, and OSX, while imaging covers Windows, Mac OSX, and various Linux distributions. The download page lists version 1.6.0-RC-3, released October 02, 2026. FOG supports bare-metal restore, but does not provide bootable recovery media.

Who it's for

FOG is a strong fit for IT teams managing multiple computers that can maintain a Linux server, prepare PXE boot, and secure the database and image storage. Hardware-independent images and multi-site support are particularly relevant when machines vary by model or span locations. It is a weaker fit for individual users seeking a simple recovery utility, or environments that need the full documented client feature set on Linux.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free for commercial use, with free community support, makes fleet imaging accessible without a software fee.
Pros: Hardware-independent images, PXE deployment, and multi-site support suit repeatable rollouts across varied machines and locations.
Pros: Host registration, scheduled power management, snapin installation, and user tracking extend the client beyond imaging.
Cons: The server must run Linux, so teams without Linux administration capacity face a real deployment barrier.
Cons: Linux clients omit the FOG Tray, Active Directory joining, and PrinterManager, limiting management consistency across mixed fleets.
Cons: Public reachability enables remote management but heightens the importance of firewalling and protecting the database and image directory.
Cons: No bootable recovery media means FOG is not a fit for workflows that require that restore method.

Alternatives

Choose AOMEI Cyber Backup if you want a backup-focused option with a free edition for basic enterprise backup and recovery, or need its yearly customized VM plan. HDClone suits private users seeking a free edition capped at 4 TB and up to 70 MB/s, with paid editions adding further capabilities. MSP360 Backup is a better fit for personal workstation backup on Linux, macOS, or Windows, with file- and image-based backup and forum support in its free plan.

Redo Rescue is another free, open-source option under GNU GPLv3. Clonezilla is a free, open-source alternative under GPL version 2. Active@ Disk Image offers a fully functional 21-day professional trial and a freeware backup-and-restore option. AOMEI Backupper is a Windows-only alternative with a perpetually free Standard plan.

Verdict

Choose FOG Project if you need free, centralized imaging and client management for a fleet, and have the Linux and network expertise to run it securely. Its combination of cross-hardware deployment and management tools is the main reason to choose it; the Linux server requirement and reduced Linux-client functions are the clearest reasons to look elsewhere.
