Overview

Flycast is a free emulator for Sega Dreamcast, Naomi, Naomi 2, and Atomiswave. It suits players looking to emulate those console and arcade systems across Android, Linux, macOS, or Windows, and who can work with the installation route for their platform. Its four-system focus is appealing, but dropped iOS support and a Windows source-build step make it a less direct choice for some users.

Key features

Flycast covers four Sega systems, making it a focused option for Dreamcast and arcade emulation rather than a broad all-platform emulator. It offers stable tagged releases, master builds, and experimental nightly development builds. Stable releases fit users who want a versioned release; the development channels are better suited to users willing to use experimental builds.

For online play, the v2.7 release notes describe improved modem emulation and fixes for online features in several games. The v2.5 notes describe DCNet as a free dedicated VPN service for Dreamcast games, with 30 game servers available at release. This gives players interested in networked Dreamcast games a dedicated option, though that server count reflects the v2.5 release.

Flycast supports physical Dreamcast controllers used with DreamConn+ and DreamPicoPort adapters. On Android, Google Auto Backup supports VMU saves and non-volatile memory, which is useful for players who want those saves backed up through that service.

Flycast does not require a Dreamcast BIOS. The Linux build instructions call for a C/C++ toolchain, CMake, make, libcurl, libudev, SDL2, and Vulkan or OpenGL, so building it on Linux requires more than installing a ready-made app.

Pricing

Flycast is free: its plan costs 0.00 USD per free and covers Dreamcast, Naomi, Naomi 2, and Atomiswave emulation. There is no free trial because the software is free. The project identifies GPL-2.0 as its license.

Platforms

Flycast supports Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows. Android users are directed to Google Play, while Linux installation instructions cover Flatpak and Flathub. On macOS, Homebrew commands are provided for master, stable, and nightly channels. Windows users are directed to a bootstrap script to build Flycast from source, a less straightforward route than the documented Android, Linux, and macOS options. Xbox One and Series users can install a build through Xbox Device Portal. iOS support has been dropped.

Who it's for

Flycast is a strong fit for Dreamcast and arcade fans who want one free emulator for four Sega systems, especially Android users who value automatic backup for VMU saves or players interested in networked play. Linux users comfortable with its listed build dependencies also have a documented path. It is a weaker fit for iOS users and Windows users who do not want to build from source.

Pros and cons

Pros: Emulates Dreamcast, Naomi, Naomi 2, and Atomiswave in one free package, with no Dreamcast BIOS requirement.
Pros: Release notes cover online-play improvements, and DCNet provides a dedicated Dreamcast VPN service.
Pros: Android save backup and support for Dreamcast controller adapters add practical options for users with compatible devices.
Cons: iOS support has been dropped, ruling out Apple mobile users.
Cons: The Windows instructions point users to a source-build bootstrap script rather than a direct installation route.
Cons: Linux builds require several development libraries and graphics support, which may deter users who want a simple setup.

MAME is worth considering for a free, GPL-2.0-or-later emulator across Android, Linux, macOS, and Windows; ROMs and copyrighted software are generally not included. nullDC 2.0.0 offers a free downloadable pre-release build for Linux, macOS, web, and Windows. Nitrocast is another free option for Linux.

Verdict

Choose Flycast if you want free emulation for Dreamcast, Naomi, Naomi 2, and Atomiswave, particularly if online play or Android save backup matters to you. Its breadth and lack of a BIOS requirement are the main reasons to pick it; look elsewhere if you need iOS support or a more direct Windows installation path.
