Overview

Fluent Reader is a free, open-source RSS reader for desktop and mobile, built for people who want to read feeds locally or connect them to a supported RSS service. Its strongest fit is the reader who values detailed filtering and control over where articles are read; those connecting an account should first consider how syncing affects locally stored articles.

Key features

The built-in article view handles RSS full text, and Mercury Parser can retrieve full text when a feed does not provide it. Web pages can open inside the app or in an external browser, so readers can choose between a contained reading session and their usual browser. Background fetching can trigger push notifications when incoming articles meet notification rules, a useful way to surface selected feeds without making every update urgent.

Search covers titles and full article contents using regular expressions. Custom regex rules can star, hide, mark, or mark articles unread, offering fine-grained control for readers comfortable defining their own patterns. Subscriptions can be grouped, imported or exported as OPML, and included in application data backups that can be restored. These tools make a substantial local workflow possible, though they ask more of users than a reader relying only on basic folders and search.

Fluent Reader is licensed under BSD-3-Clause. Its privacy policy says it does not collect, store, or share personal information; the product also says cookies are cleared on exit, XSS is blocked in an isolated context, and a strict Content Security Policy is enforced. These protections do not make a connected service invisible: a self-hosted or third-party RSS service may see activity through its API.

Pricing

Fluent Reader is free. The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes an open-source desktop RSS reader for local reading or syncing with supported RSS services. Full-text extraction, filter rules, and mobile apps are included, with no paid tier described.

That makes it a straightforward choice for readers who want a no-cost desktop reader and companion mobile access. The trade-off is that service syncing carries an important data caveat, and Inoreader connections can require your own API key if correct credentials repeatedly fail because of rate limiting.

Platforms

The desktop app is available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Windows 10 and macOS users can get it through their respective app stores; GitHub releases cover Linux and older Windows versions. Fluent Reader Lite provides mobile access on iOS through TestFlight and on Android as an APK. It supports two-pane viewing and multitasking on iPad and Android tablets.

Who it's for

Fluent Reader suits readers who want local RSS reading, regex-based organization, exportable subscriptions, and backups without paying for the reader. It also makes sense for people whose existing workflow uses Fever API, Feedbin, Inoreader, Google Reader API, or compatible services such as FreshRSS, Miniflux, The Old Reader, BazQux Reader, and Tiny Tiny RSS.

It is a less comfortable fit for anyone who expects account syncing to leave local content untouched. Connecting a service removes local articles whose source URLs match that service, although custom rules and preferences remain. Readers who depend on Inoreader should also be prepared for rate-limit errors that may call for their own API key. Bug reports and feature requests go through GitHub issues, and the project welcomes translation contributions.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free, open-source access across desktop and mobile avoids a paid-reader commitment.
Pros: Full-text search and regex rules can shape article triage around specific reading habits.
Pros: OPML import/export and restorable data backups make subscriptions and local setup portable.
Cons: Service connections can remove matching local articles, so users should review that behavior before syncing.
Cons: Inoreader rate limiting may require an individually supplied API key despite correct credentials.
Cons: Third-party and self-hosted services can observe activity conducted through their APIs.

Alternatives

Choose Feeder if you want a freemium reader with a defined free allowance of 200 feeds, 30-minute updates, 50 posts of history per feed, and two AI summaries per day. Feedly is an alternative with a free account and up to three personal Boards, plus a free trial.

Passman is another free, open-source option with no paid plan or usage limits stated. Consider Newsify if you want an iOS, macOS, or web reader with a free plan and premium option; ReadKit is for readers seeking an iOS or macOS freemium app with monthly and annual premium plans.

RSS Guard is a free, open-source desktop reader and podcast player for Linux, macOS, and Windows. Pick BazQux Reader if a paid reader with a trial and annual subscription better suits your needs, or Feedbin for a paid service with monthly or yearly billing and everything included without tiers or add-ons.

Verdict

Choose Fluent Reader if you want a free, open-source RSS workflow with local reading, powerful rules, and backup tools across desktop and mobile. Its main appeal is control without a subscription; look elsewhere if you need syncing that preserves matching local articles or want to avoid the API limits and visibility that come with connected services.
