Overview

Founded in 2004, Flickr combines photo storage and organization with a social space for photographers. Users can create and share galleries, follow photographers’ work, and take part in groups and contests. Daily curation and a large collection of Creative Commons images add discovery and inspiration alongside personal collections.

This is a stronger fit for people who want their photography to be seen and explored than for anyone seeking storage alone. Default visibility settings and per-photo controls let users decide who can see, download, or interact with particular photos and videos. Automatic mobile uploads stay private until the user chooses to share them.

Key features

Organize and discover

Flickr supports original-quality storage, galleries, and shared albums. Its image recognition can find visually similar images to assist with searching and organizing, but face search is not available. The community features—groups, contests, and a photography blog—make it possible to engage with work beyond one’s own library.

Privacy, uploads, and integrations

The mobile app can automatically upload camera-roll photos and videos, keeping them private until they are deliberately shared. Flickr also offers controls for visibility, downloads, and interactions at the individual-photo and video level. Third-party apps, including photo-editing tools, can be granted account permissions, which users can revoke in account settings.

Flickr provides a developer API for non-commercial use; commercial use is possible by prior arrangement. It says it uses physical, technical, and administrative safeguards to protect information, while acknowledging it cannot guarantee information will remain secure. Flickr states that it complies with the EU-U.S., UK Extension, and Swiss-U.S. Data Privacy Frameworks, and directs questions to its help service.

Pricing

Flickr Free — 0.00 USD per free: Includes up to 1,000 public photo and video uploads and displays ads. It is the sensible starting point for a modest public portfolio, but the upload cap and advertising make it less suitable for larger collections or ad-free browsing.
Flickr Pro — 8.00 USD per month, billed annually: Includes unlimited full-resolution photo sharing and backup, ad-free browsing, a detailed stats dashboard, and enhanced privacy settings. It suits photographers with larger libraries who want unrestricted sharing and additional privacy controls; the annual billing term matters even though the price is shown monthly.

Platforms

Flickr is available on Android, iOS, macOS, Windows, and the web, and provides an API. Its desktop app support and video backup broaden its usefulness beyond mobile photo sharing.

Who it's for

Choose Flickr if you want a photography community as well as a place to organize and share images, especially if galleries, discovery, and granular sharing controls matter to you. The free plan can work for a smaller public collection. Pro is the better fit when the public-upload limit, ads, or need for unlimited full-resolution sharing become decisive. If you only need a private library and do not value community discovery, Flickr’s social emphasis may be unnecessary.

Pros and cons

Pro: Per-photo visibility, download, and interaction controls give photographers meaningful say over how individual images are shared.
Pro: Groups, contests, curated photography, and Creative Commons images make Flickr useful for discovery as well as storage.
Pro: Pro combines unlimited full-resolution sharing and backup with ad-free browsing and a stats dashboard.
Con: Free users are limited to 1,000 public photo and video uploads and see ads.
Con: Pro is billed annually, so the displayed monthly price does not mean a monthly billing commitment.
Con: Face search is not available, which may matter to users who want to find people across a photo collection.

Verdict

Flickr is a strong choice for photographers who want their organized galleries to live alongside a community for sharing and discovery. Its privacy controls and Pro plan’s unlimited full-resolution sharing are compelling reasons to choose it; look elsewhere if you need face search, or if the free plan’s public-upload cap and ads are too restrictive and annual billing does not suit you.
