Overview

Gravitee API Gateway is a high-performance runtime for teams managing security and traffic rules across APIs. It suits organizations that need one policy approach across varied protocols and deployment environments. Its broad controls and flat pricing are compelling, but production gateway counts and support tiers shape the paid-plan choice.

Key features

Policy Studio gives teams drag-and-drop configuration for OAuth 2.0, JWT, mutual TLS, API keys, OIDC, OpenAPI validation, rate limiting, caching, threat protection, and message transformation. Shared policy groups extend that consistency across thousands of APIs and plans, a practical advantage for large API estates; smaller teams may not need that scale.

Protocol coverage spans REST, GraphQL, gRPC, SOAP, WebSocket, Server-sent Events, and Webhooks. The gateway can mediate between protocols and formats, including gRPC to Kafka, JSON to Protobuf, and REST to Kafka. Integrations include Kafka, Confluent, Solace, HiveMQ, and MQTT brokers, making it relevant to teams connecting APIs with event brokers.

Identity options include OAuth 2.0, JWT, mTLS, API Key, OIDC, and SAML, with federated identity through Gravitee Access Management or an external identity provider. Traffic controls cover OpenAPI validation, threat protection, IP filtering, CORS, caching, retries, circuit breakers, and per-consumer rate limits. These controls offer breadth, though teams should choose based on the policies they actually need rather than protocol count alone.

Runtime telemetry can flow through OpenTelemetry to Datadog, Grafana, Splunk, and other tools; Alert Engine can send email, Slack, or webhook alerts. The product also includes an API catalog, developer portal, lifecycle management, API product management, access policies, and analytics. Deployment can be self-managed, on AWS, Azure, GCP, on-premises, or on Kubernetes via the Gateway API, giving organizations room to match hosting to their infrastructure.

Pricing

The Community Edition is free under Apache 2.0. It is a sensible starting point for teams that want the community edition, but no numerical limits are given. Paid pricing is flat, with unlimited API calls and users, and is per gateway rather than per call; the key trade-off is production gateway capacity.

Planet costs $2,500/m and includes unlimited users, unlimited APIs, one production gateway, and Gold Support. It fits a team that can run its production footprint through a single gateway; teams needing more production gateways must look higher.

Galaxy has custom pricing and includes unlimited users and APIs, two production gateways, enterprise plugins, limited event broker support, hybrid or managed deployment, and Gold Support. It is the middle ground for teams that need a second gateway or enterprise plugins, but broker support is limited.

Universe has custom pricing and includes unlimited users and APIs, four or more production gateways, unlimited enterprise functionality, all supported event brokers, IAM, 24/7 support, and a Technical Account Manager. It is aimed at larger deployments where broker breadth and around-the-clock support matter.

A 14-day trial is available. The free edition has no numerical caps stated, while paid plans scale by gateway count and add support or enterprise capabilities rather than per-call charges.

Platforms

Gravitee supports API, Linux, self-hosted, web, and Windows environments. Its hybrid deployment model can accommodate self-managed, cloud, on-premises, and Kubernetes deployments. The Trust Centre covers GDPR, HIPAA, ISO/IEC 27001, PCI DSS v4.0.0, and SOC 2 Type 2 compliance information, with access-request links for reports and documents.

Who it's for

Gravitee is best suited to organizations that need consistent runtime policies across many APIs, particularly those combining API protocols with event-broker traffic. Its deployment flexibility and broad controls also suit enterprises with varied infrastructure. A small team with a single, straightforward API may find the enterprise-oriented breadth and paid gateway tiers more than it needs.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad protocol and identity support helps consolidate policy enforcement across different API styles.
Pros: Shared policy groups and traffic controls support consistent governance as API estates grow.
Pros: Flat pricing without per-call fees makes usage growth less directly tied to the bill.
Cons: Planet includes only one production gateway, so a larger production footprint requires a custom-priced plan.
Cons: Galaxy limits event-broker support, while full broker coverage and 24/7 support sit in Universe.
Cons: Community Edition has no numerical limits stated, making its capacity harder to judge against a planned workload.

Alternatives

Choose Kong Gateway if an open-source gateway with a free plan is the priority; its product page does not state paid-plan limits. KrakenD API Gateway is worth considering for a free, self-hosted community edition with unlimited requests, APIs, and AI workloads.

Apache APISIX is a free alternative for teams looking for a Linux or self-hosted API gateway. Tyk API Management is another paid option with a free plan and trial; its Professional plan is flat-rate and includes unlimited gateways, APIs, and monthly requests.

Tyk Gateway offers a free open-source gateway and a usage-based Core plan. Google Cloud API Gateway is a freemium alternative with monthly plans priced around API-call volumes. For a free Kubernetes API gateway, consider Emissary-ingress; for a free Apache 2.0 Java/Spring application dependency, consider Spring Integration.

Verdict

Gravitee API Gateway is a strong choice for organizations standardizing policies across diverse APIs, broker integrations, and deployment environments. Its no-per-call flat pricing and extensive controls are the main reasons to choose it. Look elsewhere if you need multiple production gateways at a clearly priced entry tier, or if your API requirements are simple enough that Gravitee's broad enterprise feature set is unnecessary.
