Overview

XnConvert is desktop software for converting and editing batches of images, best suited to people managing large or recurring photo collections. Its breadth of operations and automation make it more capable than a simple format converter, though company use requires a paid license.

With support for more than 500 formats and export to about 70, XnConvert can bring a mixed collection into a consistent output format while applying edits along the way. More than 80 operations cover metadata, transformations, adjustments, filters and effects. That range is useful when a batch needs more than resizing or conversion, but it also makes XnConvert a better fit for deliberate workflows than for someone seeking only a one-off file conversion.

Presets let users reuse an edit sequence, and watched folders can apply a custom set of edits automatically when images are added or updated. XnConvert also exports to NConvert for command-line use, giving recurring workflows a route beyond the graphical interface. The interface supports drag and drop, and the product includes more than 20 translations.

Key features

Batch operations: More than 80 tools include metadata editing, transforms, adjustments, filters and effects. Bulk resizing and renaming, plus RAW processing, extend its usefulness beyond format changes.
Format coverage: Support for more than 500 formats and export to about 70 formats—including JPEG, TIFF, PNG and WebP—helps with collections containing varied image types.
Automation and reuse: Saved presets make repeat batches consistent; watched folders can automatically process new or updated images. This is a strong fit for recurring intake, while the command-line export to NConvert offers another workflow option.
Review and control: Quality controls, color management, a metadata viewer, side-by-side comparison and contact sheets help users inspect and manage image batches rather than simply convert them.
Trust and support: Downloads include SHA-256 checksums, useful for verifying files. The XnConvert forum is the recommended place to interact with users and the developer.

Pricing

XnConvert is freeware for private, educational and non-profit use, with no adware or spyware. That makes it a practical option for individuals, students and eligible organizations that need the full batch workflow without a software fee. There is no free trial because the eligible-use version is free.

Company use requires a license. The one-time per-license prices are tiered by quantity: 1 license costs 15.00 €; 2–9 cost 13.50 € per license; 10–19 cost 12.00 € per license; 20–49 cost 10.50 € per license; 50–99 cost 9.00 € per license; and 100 or more cost 6.50 € per license. The discount is relevant to organizations licensing larger groups, while a company buying a single seat pays the highest per-license rate. These are one-time charges, not recurring subscriptions.

Platforms

XnConvert runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, so teams and individuals can use the same product across the three major desktop platforms. RAW support, bulk resizing and quality controls make it relevant to photography workflows; resize methods are described as dimension-based.

Who it's for

Choose XnConvert if you regularly convert or edit many images, especially when you need broad format support, repeatable presets or automatic processing of watched folders. It also suits users who want inspection tools such as comparison, contact sheets and metadata viewing alongside batch operations.

It is less compelling for a user who only needs a quick, occasional conversion and has no need for automation or the wider editing toolkit. Commercial users should also account for the license requirement; the free terms are for private, educational and non-profit use, not company use.

Pros and cons

Pro — broad input and output coverage: More than 500 supported formats and about 70 export formats help handle diverse collections.
Pro — repeatable automation: Presets, watched folders and command-line export support workflows that recur over time.
Pro — more than conversion: RAW processing, resizing, renaming, comparison and contact sheets bring useful batch tools into one application.
Con — company use is paid: Businesses need a license, even though eligible private, educational and non-profit users can use it free.
Con — narrow stated resize method: Resizing is described in terms of dimensions, so users seeking other documented resize methods should consider their requirements carefully.
