Overview

FBReader is an ebook reader for desktop and mobile devices that supports formats including ePub, fb2, mobi, HTML, RTF and plain text. It suits readers who want one reader across several platforms, especially those who value catalogue access and keeping their reading progress in sync. Its strongest case is broad format support paired with cross-device continuity; its limitations vary by platform.

Key features

FBReader handles common ebook and text formats, and opens ePub books protected with Readium LCP. That makes it a flexible option for readers with books in different formats, though feature support is not uniform across platforms.

The Book Network synchronizes collections, reading positions, bookmarks and custom shelves across supported devices. Books are stored in the user's Google Drive space, while metadata, covers and reading positions are stored on FBReader servers. FBReader says its Google Drive access is limited to uploading new files and accessing files it created, not other Drive content. Readers who want their books and progress to follow them between devices get a useful continuity feature, with storage split between Drive and FBReader's servers.

Online book catalogues using OPDS are supported on Android, Windows, macOS and Linux, but not currently on iOS; iOS support is planned. Android Premium adds PDF and comics support, Google and DeepL translation integration, and automatic reading aloud. These extras make the Android paid tier more capable, but readers on iOS or desktop should not assume they get the same feature set.

The current code is closed source. The binary SDK for Android and iOS includes a text-format rendering engine but no PDF renderer. The maker points users to its FAQ and public Telegram group for online support.

Pricing

FBReader is freemium. The Windows, macOS and Linux reader costs 0.00 USD per free; supported features and formats vary by platform. Android Free costs 0.00 USD per free, with some features requiring Premium or separate plugins. These free editions suit readers who need basic reading without paying, but they do not guarantee the same capabilities on every platform.

FBReader for iOS costs 0.00 USD per free with in-app purchases. The free version is limited to ten books and disables online translation; the full version is a one-time fee, with no amount stated. It is a constrained starting point for iPhone and iPad readers rather than an unrestricted free library.

FBReader Premium for Android costs 14.99 USD per once, a one-time purchase tied to a Google Play or Huawei account. It adds PDF and comics support, translation integrations and automatic reading aloud. It is the clearest fit for Android readers who want those features; its account tie matters if they expect to move the purchase between stores.

Platforms

FBReader runs on Android, iOS, Windows, macOS and Linux. Platform differences are material: OPDS catalogues are supported on Android and desktop systems but not currently on iOS, and the Android Premium features do not describe the iOS or desktop editions.

On Android 10 and later, FBReader 3.8 and newer uses Android's Storage Access Framework. Its folder-access restrictions can slow file operations, a practical drawback for readers who manage books in folders.

Who it's for

Choose FBReader if you read across supported formats or devices and want your collections, bookmarks and reading positions to stay in sync. Android readers who need PDF, comics, translations or reading aloud have a specific reason to consider Premium. It is less suitable if you need unrestricted free reading on iOS, third-party catalogues on iOS, or a consistent feature set across every platform.

Verdict

FBReader is a strong choice for readers who want broad ebook-format support and synchronized reading details across devices. Android users who need PDF, comics, translation or reading aloud have a clear upgrade path. Look elsewhere if you rely on iOS OPDS catalogues or need more than ten books in the free iOS version.
