Overview

Fing checks routers for known vulnerabilities, outdated firmware, DNS hijacking risks, and exposed management interfaces. It can also alert you when an unfamiliar device joins the network, identifying its brand, model, and type. That makes Fing useful both for spotting potential security issues and for answering the practical question of what has just connected to your network.

Its scope goes beyond a one-off inventory: Fing supports scheduled discovery, asset inventory, and both hybrid discovery and network scope. However, security checks that run on a schedule and continuous threat detection require a subscription. The free tier allows up to three scans per day, so it is better suited to occasional checks than set-and-forget protection.

Key features

Router and device checks

Scheduled router checks look for several common exposure points, including old firmware and exposed management interfaces. Unknown-device alerts add context by showing the device’s brand, model, and type. Together, these features help home users notice changes on a network without having to interpret a bare device list. The trade-off is that scheduled vulnerability scans are not part of the free plan.

Camera scanning and continuous monitoring

Fing scans connected Wi-Fi networks for cameras and spy devices against a database of more than 12 million known camera models. This may be useful when checking a network for unfamiliar camera devices, but it is a network scan rather than a claim to detect every possible hidden camera.

For continuous automated checks, Fing Agent can run on a Raspberry Pi, Docker, or NAS. That gives users who want 24/7 monitoring a way to keep checks running without relying on a desktop app. Fing also lists Home Assistant, IFTTT, and its Local API for presence data, network events, and custom automation.

Professional and security credentials

Fing identifies IT consultants, MSPs, and small businesses as users who can audit client networks and monitor security. Its Professional plan adds shared workspaces, multi-user collaboration, and advanced reporting, features that are more relevant to teams than to an individual home user. Fing says it is SOC 2 Type II certified. It also says payment data is encrypted and sent directly to its PCI DSS-compliant processor, Stripe, and that Fing does not collect or store bank or card details.

Pricing

Fing uses a freemium model. The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes up to three scans per day, internet speed tests, network and ISP reporting, and troubleshooting tools. It is a reasonable starting point for occasional network checks, but it excludes scheduled vulnerability scans and continuous threat detection.

Premium costs 7.99 USD per month, billed monthly, and covers two monitored networks with continuous scans and advanced security and network control. It is the more direct fit for a household or individual responsible for a small number of networks who wants monitoring to continue automatically.

Professional costs 16.99 USD per month, billed monthly. It includes three or more monitored networks, shared workspaces, multi-user collaboration, and advanced reporting. The additional collaboration features make it the better fit for consultants or small teams; a single household is less likely to need them. The choice between plans hinges chiefly on the number of networks and whether multiple people need to work together.

Platforms

Fing lists support for Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows, as well as API and self-hosted options. Fing Desktop is available for Windows and macOS, but not currently for Linux. For always-on checks, Fing Agent supports Raspberry Pi, Docker, and NAS. The platform options are broad, though Linux users looking specifically for the desktop app should note that limitation.

Who it's for

Fing is a good fit for people who want router vulnerability checks, alerts about new devices, and a way to scan a Wi-Fi network for known camera models. Premium is the more suitable choice when continuous scans across up to two networks matter; Professional makes more sense for client work or small teams needing shared access and reporting.

It is less suitable for anyone who expects ongoing threat detection without a subscription, or for Linux users who need a dedicated Fing desktop application. The free plan’s three-scan daily cap leaves room for spot checks, not continuous monitoring.

Pros and cons

Pros: Router checks cover firmware, DNS hijacking risks, and exposed management interfaces, giving users several concrete issues to watch for.
Pros: Unknown-device alerts include brand, model, and type, making new connections easier to identify.
Pros: Fing Agent supports 24/7 automated checks on Raspberry Pi, Docker, or NAS, rather than requiring a desktop to remain available.
Cons: The free plan is capped at three scans per day and does not include scheduled vulnerability scans or continuous threat detection.
Cons: Fing Desktop is not currently available for Linux, despite Linux being among the listed platforms.
Cons: Professional costs more than Premium and is chiefly justified by its additional network allowance and collaboration features.

Alternatives

For a broader look at tools in this category, browse Network Discovery Software or Network Monitoring.

Domotz is worth considering if its freemium model, free trial, and per-managed-device option at 1.50 USD per month, billed in bundles of 10, suit the way you want to pay.

LOGINventory is another option if a free inventory capped at 20 devices or its Inventory360 plan at 6.50 EUR per year better matches your needs.

OCS Inventory may suit readers looking for the maker-described open-source community project, developed for more than 20 years.

LanTopoLog offers a one-time 50.00 USD license for a local network, a different pricing approach from Fing’s monthly subscriptions.

runZero is an alternative with a free Community Edition that includes 100 assets, one organization, 10 recurring tasks, and 30 days of data retention.

LANState is a Windows-only alternative with one-time license options, including a 99.95 USD plan for 50 hosts on one computer.

WhatInStartup is a free Windows tool for listing and managing programs loaded at startup, rather than a network security alternative.

Infoblox Cloud Network Automation uses token-based licensing, with tokens purchased for use over an agreement term.

Verdict

Fing Security is a strong match for home users and small IT teams who want router checks, informative new-device alerts, and an option for continuous monitoring through Fing Agent. Its clearest reason to choose is the combination of network security checks and device visibility; its clearest reason to look elsewhere is that the free plan does not provide scheduled scans or continuous threat detection. Choose Premium for ongoing coverage of up to two networks, or Professional when multiple networks and team collaboration justify the higher monthly cost.
