Overview

Upload video or audio to generate editable, time-coded transcripts, then review, translate, style, burn in, or export captions. SRTGen supports short- and long-form work, from social clips and podcasts to courses, marketing videos, and news. It brings multiple localization steps together, which is an advantage for recurring multilingual production but unnecessary overhead for someone who only needs a transcript.

Key features

Exports include SRT, VTT, ASS, and TXT; agent localization also supports JSON. Caption styling, brand presets, and speaker identification add useful control beyond basic transcription. Translation covers 100+ languages, and voice dubbing and voice-clone slots extend the workflow for teams producing localized versions. Synthetic voices use OpenAI, Cartesia, and ElevenLabs.

MCP-compatible connections include Codex, Claude, Gemini, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, and Windsurf. SRTGen also offers a REST API, with full developer API access on higher plans. Agent localization allows uploads up to 20 GiB and five subtitle export formats. For videos over 200 MB, the recommended approach is to extract a compact MP3 locally and keep the original video on the user's computer for final rendering.

Collaborative Workspaces provide invitations, admin/editor/viewer roles, shared templates, pooled credits and billing, and real-time project synchronization. Storage is cloud-based, with plan allowances from 2 GB to 500 GB. SRTGen says uploads are stored in Backblaze B2 and audio processing may involve AssemblyAI, Google Gemini, ElevenLabs, and Cartesia. It describes encryption, access controls, short-lived sessions, and other security measures; deleted project files are queued for removal within 30 days, account deletion schedules files for permanent deletion within 90 days, and AI processing logs may be retained for up to two years.

Pricing

Free costs 0.00 USD per free and includes 20 signup credits, 20 transcription minutes, 40 translation minutes, up to 4k speech characters, and 2 GB storage. It includes SRT, VTT, and TXT export, one seat, and three voice-clone slots. Recording is capped at five minutes and 720p. These limits make Free a trial of the workflow, not a substantial ongoing localization allowance.

Starter is $4.00 USD per month for the first two months, then $8/mo. It includes 360 credits, 360 transcription minutes, 720 translation minutes, 20 GB storage, 10 voice-clone slots, and one seat. It is the sensible paid entry point for an individual social creator with regular but moderate volume.

Pro is $14.00 USD per month for the first two months, then $24/mo, with 1,500 credits, 1,500 transcription minutes, 3,000 translation minutes, 100 GB storage, 30 voice-clone slots, and three seats. It fits professional localization work and small teams; additional seats cost $3.00 per month. Business is $49.00 USD per month for the first two months, then $69/mo, with 5,000 credits, 5,000 transcription minutes, 10,000 translation minutes, 500 GB storage, 100 voice-clone slots, and 10 seats. That capacity is aimed at brands localizing video at high volume; extra seats also cost $3.00 per month.

Plans offer monthly or yearly billing, with yearly billing stated to save 25%; non-expiring top-ups are also available. Overage credits cost 1.00 USD per 20 Credits once plan allowance is exhausted. Enterprise has custom pricing for bulk processing, automation pipelines, and dedicated agency services. Check the post-introductory rate against expected usage before committing.

Platforms

SRTGen supports web and API access. Its MCP agent connections provide another route into localization workflows, while the web interface supports upload, review, and export.

Who it's for

Choose SRTGen if you routinely transcribe, translate, style, and deliver captions or dubbed video, especially across multiple languages or as a team. Solo users with occasional, short recordings may find the free caps restrictive, while those needing only manual timeline captioning or basic subtitle files may not benefit from the extra localization tools.

Pros and cons

Pros: Transcription, translation, dubbing, styling, review, and export sit in one workflow, reducing the need to piece together localization steps.
Pros: Broad file formats, 100+ translation languages, and MCP/API options serve both production teams and automated workflows.
Pros: Pro and Business include multiple seats, shared workspaces, and pooled credits for collaboration.
Cons: Free transcription and translation allowances are only 20 and 40 minutes respectively, and recording is limited to five minutes at 720p.
Cons: Introductory rates last just two months; ongoing costs are materially higher, particularly for Pro and Business.
Cons: Free and Starter are single-seat plans, so collaboration requires a higher tier.

Alternatives

Verdict

SRTGen is a strong fit for creators and teams that need translation, caption styling, dubbing, and export in a single localization workflow, with API and agent routes when automation matters. Its main drawback is the narrow free allowance and the jump from promotional to ongoing pricing. Choose it for breadth and team capacity; look elsewhere if you only need occasional basic captions or want a stable low-cost plan.
