Overview

Expertiza is an open-source web application for instructors who want students to submit and assess one another’s academic work. It suits courses built around peer feedback on varied learning objects, but instructors should be prepared to allocate reviews manually.

Its combination of assignment tools, rubric scoring and Moodle grade pass-back makes it a focused peer-assessment option rather than a general learning management system. The MIT license and self-hosting guidance offer flexibility, while Moodle setup depends on an administrator.

Key features

Assignments and peer assessment

Instructors can create and deploy assignments; students can submit and review work, form teams and sign up for topics. Submissions can include documents, URLs and wiki pages, so the workflow is not limited to conventional written files. Rubric scoring and moderation tools support structured assessment, while one-way reviewer anonymity gives reviewers a degree of separation without promising reciprocal anonymity.

Review allocation is manual. That gives instructors direct control over assignment of reviews, but adds work as classes and review rounds grow. Expertiza is a stronger fit for courses able to manage that process than for instructors seeking automatic distribution.

Moodle integration

Expertiza supports launching assignments from Moodle through LTI and transferring grades to the Moodle gradebook for assignments launched that way. The integration requires a Moodle administrator to register and activate Expertiza as an external tool provider, so setup is not solely an instructor task. A project description of the Moodle single-sign-on implementation says it did not include deadline or course-grade synchronization; grade pass-back for launched assignments should not be mistaken for broader synchronization.

The initial Moodle single-sign-on work used LTI 1.1, and the project recommends considering LTI 1.3 for stronger security. A generic synchronization interface is intended for LMS platforms such as Blackboard and Canvas, but the described launch and grade pass-back support is specifically for Moodle.

Hosting and support

Documentation covers local operation, production deployment and development in a virtual machine, including an NC State VCL image prepared with the environment. Development guides cover Ubuntu/Debian, macOS and RHEL-based Linux; developers are advised to have a JVM installed. Instructor and student manuals, presentations and videos provide learning resources, while the repository directs developers to setup documentation and welcomes GitHub pull requests.

Pricing

Expertiza is free and open source under the MIT license. There is no paid subscription plan to weigh against its capabilities; the trade-off is that an institution considering deployment should account for hosting and setup work, particularly Moodle administrator involvement. The project directs developers to deployment and setup guidance rather than describing a commercial support plan.

Platforms

Expertiza is a web application, with Linux and macOS development setup guidance and options to run it locally or self-host it. The development documentation’s JVM requirement is relevant to developers, not a stated requirement for students using the web application.

Who it's for

Expertiza is best suited to instructors and institutions that want students to review submitted academic work, need rubrics and moderation, and can handle manual review allocation. It is especially relevant where Moodle launch and grade pass-back are useful and an administrator can configure the external tool. Courses needing automated review assignment or broader deadline and course-grade synchronization should look elsewhere.

The project describes use in selected NC State courses and by professors at several other colleges and universities. Its academic focus is clear, but the project pages do not state a security certification or compliance standard, which may matter to institutions assessing deployment requirements.

Pros and cons

Pros

Broad submission support: documents, URLs and wiki pages can all be submitted, accommodating different kinds of learning objects.
Structured peer assessment: rubrics, moderation and one-way reviewer anonymity support a defined review process.
Open-source deployment options: the MIT license and local, virtual-machine and production deployment guidance give institutions room to manage their own installation.
Moodle grade pass-back: grades can move to the Moodle gradebook for assignments launched through Moodle.

Cons

Manual review allocation: instructors must manage the assignment of reviews rather than rely on automated allocation.
Administrator-dependent Moodle setup: an administrator must register and activate Expertiza as an external tool provider.
Limited synchronization scope: the described single-sign-on implementation does not synchronize deadlines or course grades, and the initial implementation uses LTI 1.1.
Institutional security review remains important: the project pages do not state a certification or compliance standard.

Alternatives

ComPAIR is also free and offers web and self-hosted platforms; consider it if you are comparing another option with those deployment choices.
CrowdGrader has a free instructor-sponsored assignment tier capped at 20 students, plus a student-supported assignment plan at 1.99 USD per year billed every six months. Consider it if those assignment-based terms suit your class better than self-hosted Expertiza.
Eli Review offers free instructor access with unlimited courses and all platform features, alongside student access priced by term. Consider it if instructor access without a subscription is the priority.
Kritik360 offers professors free account and course activation, instructional design and ongoing support. Consider it if that educator support is more important than Expertiza’s open-source deployment model.
Peerceptiv offers campus-wide subscriptions with unrestricted campus use, an administrator dashboard and a custom API, with pricing by inquiry. Consider it if those campus-wide administration and API provisions are the deciding factors.
PeerAssessment.com provides a free trial for one class, one term, one instructor, up to 100 students and 12 assessments. Consider it if a bounded trial better suits an initial evaluation.
Marka is a freemium web option; consider it if you want to compare another web-based peer-assessment product.
peerScholar offers a WCET promotional plan at 4500.00 USD per year for unlimited courses, faculty, team members, students and activities. Consider it if those stated plan terms fit your institution.

Verdict

Choose Expertiza if your institution wants a free, MIT-licensed system for student submission and peer review, and can manage manual review allocation and deployment. Moodle launch and grade pass-back are useful strengths, but the administrator setup and limited synchronization make it a less suitable choice for courses that need automated allocation or broader LMS syncing.
