Overview

MootUp is a browser-accessible platform for building 3D virtual and hybrid events, from conferences and exhibitions to classrooms and coworking spaces. It best suits organizers who want customizable venues and attendee interaction in the same product. Its standout advantage is the range of event formats and ways to participate; its free Basic plan, however, is limited to five people per meeting and 40 minutes.

Key features

Attendees can join from a shared browser link without installing an app or using a VR headset, reducing friction for audiences on different devices. Customizable 3D avatars, video avatars, and hologram avatars offer more ways to represent attendees than a standard video grid, while voice and video calls, chat, private messages, gestures, and animations support both direct conversation and lighter social interaction.

Organizers can shape venues, add breakout rooms and sponsor booths, or use custom 3D environments. That flexibility fits exhibitions and branded events, though a virtual venue is more elaborate than a simple meeting room and may be unnecessary for teams that only need routine calls. MootUp also supports live and prerecorded video, including integrations with YouTube Live, Adobe Connect, and Zoom, and names Slack, BlueJeans, Intrado, Splash, and Hopin among its integrations.

Trophio tracks visits, content views, popular event elements, and interactions, with metric exports for post-event analysis. Capacity depends on the format: many-to-many video calls support up to 50 people, many-to-many audio calls up to 250, while webinar-style one-to-many video supports thousands. Those distinctions matter: large audiences may suit a broadcast, but not an equally large open video conversation.

Pricing

MootUp uses a freemium model, with a free plan and a 30-day trial. Basic costs 0.00 USD per free and includes unlimited meetings, up to five participants per meeting, a 40-minute meeting limit, six environment templates, and SSL encryption. It is useful for small, short sessions or an initial trial of the format, but the participant and duration caps rule it out for larger events.

Business has custom pricing and plans for 50–10,000 participants. It includes unlimited rooms, 5GB of cloud storage, SSO, and hybrid cloud security. It is the relevant tier for larger or more complex events, but custom pricing means organizers should confirm the cost against their event needs before committing. Plans include unlimited email and chat support plus a set number of onboarding support hours; live event technical support is separate.

Platforms

MootUp supports Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web, and Windows. Browser-link access without an installation requirement makes it practical for attendees who should not have to download software just to join.

Who it's for

MootUp is aimed at business, marketing, education, event planning, exhibitors, sponsors, and attendees. It is strongest for organizers who can make use of virtual booths, breakout spaces, advanced networking, or event interaction metrics. For a small group that only needs a short video meeting, the Basic caps and 3D venue focus may be more than the job requires.

Pros and cons

Pro: Browser-based entry without a required download or VR headset lowers the access barrier for mixed-device audiences.
Pro: Venues, booths, avatars, and interaction tools cover both event presentation and attendee networking.
Pro: Trophio metrics and exports can help organizers see which content and spaces drew attention.
Con: Basic allows only five participants and 40 minutes per meeting, so it is a poor fit for a larger free event.
Con: Video-call capacity is lower than audio or webinar capacity; organizers should choose the event format around the relevant limit.
Con: Business uses custom pricing, and live-event technical support is separate from the included support.

Alternatives

For a straightforward meeting with a higher free attendance cap, choose Webex App: its free plan supports up to 100 attendees for meetings of up to 40 minutes, versus MootUp Basic's five-person cap. Shindig is another freemium event option, with a free plan capped at 100 participants per event, four speakers on stage, and 1,000 user hours monthly.

EventX offers a free plan with unlimited events and 30 attendees per event, making it worth considering for organizers whose priority is running multiple smaller events. For a free event capped at 50 attendees with QR check-in, seating charts, and basic reports, consider Micepad. Zoom Scheduler is a scheduling alternative rather than a virtual event venue: its Scheduler Basic plan provides one personal booking page and one calendar connection.

SpatialChat suits smaller spatial meetings, with a free plan offering up to 12 participants, two meeting hours daily, and four customized rooms. flat.social is another option for small spatial gatherings: its free plan supports up to five people at once with unlimited session length. For larger registration-focused events, Accelevents offers plans ranging from one event with 500 registrants to unlimited events with higher registrant caps.

Verdict

Choose MootUp if your event benefits from customizable 3D spaces, attendee networking, sponsor booths, and interaction analytics across multiple event formats. Its browser access and broad event toolkit are compelling for organizers building an experience rather than simply hosting a call. Look elsewhere if your priority is a larger free meeting: Basic stops at five participants, and the larger Business tier requires custom pricing.
