Overview

You.com is a developer-focused suite of web search, page extraction, answer-generation, and research APIs for building AI applications. It suits developers creating agents, RAG systems, knowledge bases, and data-driven tools; its appeal is the choice of focused APIs, while costs and the need to check generated answers call for care.

Key features

The Web Search API returns structured web and news results with metadata and snippets, plus optional full-page content. Developers can choose how much result content to retrieve, with 1–100 results per call. The separate Contents API turns supplied webpage URLs into clean HTML or Markdown, a practical option when an application needs page text prepared for LLMs rather than search results alone.

The Answer API synthesizes natural-language responses from retrieved results and returns inline citations and source results. For more involved questions, the Research API conducts multi-step research and synthesis, with five effort levels from Lite to Frontier. Finance Research focuses on financial questions, drawing on filings, macro data, markets, and derived calculations. These specialized endpoints offer useful building blocks, but their output is not a substitute for independent review: You.com warns that generated responses may be inaccurate or incomplete.

A hosted MCP server connects search, extraction, research, and finance research tools to LLMs and agents. Setup guides cover Cursor, Claude Code, Codex CLI, VS Code, and JetBrains IDEs. You.com also offers a Zero Data Retention option to automatically purge queries and data, and says its infrastructure is SOC 2 certified and independently audited for security, privacy, and availability.

Pricing

You.com combines free access with pay-as-you-go API charges, with no minimums. The pricing page also advertises $100 in free credits. The free Web Search tier allows 100 queries per day and includes web and news results, making it a sensible starting point for evaluation or low-volume use; that daily cap limits its suitability for sustained high-volume applications.

Plan	Price	What it includes
Free	0.00 USD per free	100 queries/day, web and news results, and $100 free credit
Contents API	1.00 USD per once	$1.00 /1k pages; batch multiple URLs per request; $100 free credit
Web Search API	5.00 USD per once	$5.00 /1k calls; 1–100 results per call; $100 free credit
Answer API	5.00 USD per once	$5.00 /1k calls; synthesized citation-grounded answers; $100 free credit
Research API	12.00 USD per once	$12.00 /1k calls; Lite, Standard, Deep, Exhaustive, and Frontier tiers; $100 free credit
Finance Research API	110.00 USD per once	$110.00 /1k calls; Deep and Exhaustive tiers; $100 free credit

The unit costs make Contents the least expensive listed API, while Finance Research is markedly more costly and is best reserved for applications that need its financial coverage. The company says volume and annual usage discounts are available. Paid plans start at $15/user/mo (annual); enterprise usage can request custom QPS limits, and pricing is custom. File uploads and a team workspace are supported. No seat count or quota for those paid offerings is stated, so teams should confirm fit before committing.

Platforms

You.com is available on Android, iOS, and the web, as well as through its API. For developers, API access and the hosted MCP server are the most relevant routes; mobile and web platforms extend access beyond that integration-focused use.

Who it's for

You.com is strongest for developers who want web retrieval, extraction, grounded answers, and multi-step research as separate components they can combine in an agent or application. Its finance endpoint is a more targeted fit for financial question-answering. It is less compelling for readers seeking a consumer search tool alone or for teams that need generated results to be accepted without verification.

Pros and cons

Pros: Distinct APIs cover search, extraction, answers, general research, and finance research, so developers can pay for the capability their application needs.
Pros: Free search access, $100 in free credits, and pay-as-you-go usage with no minimums lower the barrier to trying the APIs.
Pros: Zero Data Retention, SOC 2 certification, independent audits, and custom QPS limits address important privacy and scaling considerations.
Cons: Free web search is capped at 100 queries per day, which is restrictive for production workloads.
Cons: Usage charges vary by endpoint, and Finance Research costs $110.00 per 1k calls, so sustained or specialized use can become expensive.
Cons: Generated output may be inaccurate or incomplete and needs independent review, adding a quality-control step to applications.

Alternatives

For individual AI search with limited daily use at no charge or expanded use for $20.00 per month, Perplexity is an alternative; You.com is the more directly API-oriented choice for developers assembling search and research components.

Felo Search is another free AI search option with 5 professional searches per day and up to 3 file analyses; choose it if that daily allowance and file analysis suit your needs better than developer APIs.

Andi AI offers unlimited free searches, plus reading, summarizing, explaining, and AI text generation. It is a fit for free search and content tasks rather than a suite of paid usage-priced APIs.

Google AI Mode is an alternative for people who prefer a search experience across Android, iOS, and web, with free access and paid Google AI plans. You.com is more suited to developers who need API endpoints.

Brave Search may suit users who want ad-free results and a cleaner results-page view for $3.00 per month, rather than API-based answer and research features.

Microsoft Copilot Search is a free alternative for those seeking a search experience across Android, iOS, and web; You.com is the stronger fit when an application needs separate retrieval and synthesis APIs.

Consensus offers unlimited paper searches on its free tier, alongside limited Pro messages and capped research and API/MCP use. It is worth considering for paper-focused discovery; You.com covers broader web and finance research.

Jina AI is an alternative for API or self-hosted use, with a free non-commercial tier of 10 million tokens and a $50.00 one-time prototype plan. Choose it when those terms and deployment options fit better.

Verdict

Choose You.com if you are building an AI application and want distinct APIs for web retrieval, extraction, citation-backed answers, or multi-step research, with a free entry point and usage-based billing. Look elsewhere if you need a simple, low-cost consumer search experience or cannot afford to independently check generated output.
