Overview

Edpuzzle is an online teaching platform for turning video into assignable lessons. It suits educators who want students to answer questions while watching and who need to follow their progress. Its classroom focus is a strength, but assignment caps and student-account requirements may shape whether it fits a particular course.

Key features

Teachers can build lessons from YouTube videos, their own uploads, or another teacher’s lesson, then add recorded voice and embedded questions. This gives educators several ways to adapt video for instruction without making Edpuzzle a general-purpose video editor. Its Question Generator can insert multiple-choice or open-ended questions automatically, but may not work when a video lacks enough information, so teachers should not rely on it to produce suitable questions for every clip.

Teachers can assign lessons and monitor student progress in real time as students work at their own pace. Quizzes and assessments and annotations are supported, and videos can be up to 120 minutes. Students need Edpuzzle accounts for teachers to track assignment progress; open classes do not require accounts, but that option gives up progress tracking.

Edpuzzle integrates with Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, Canvas, Schoology, Moodle, Blackboard, Blackbaud, Clever, ClassLink, D2L Brightspace, and eKadence. The Google Classroom add-on lets teachers create and manage assignments there, and students can complete lessons without a separate Edpuzzle account. iOS and Android apps let students access and complete assignments on mobile devices. The Chrome extension can import YouTube videos into a teacher’s library and record the screen.

Edpuzzle says it collects only the student information needed to create accounts and does not sell or rent personal information to third parties. Its privacy programs include participation in iKeepSafe’s FTC-approved COPPA Safe Harbor Program, iKeepSafe FERPA, COPPA, and CSPC seals, and the Student Privacy Pledge. It also offers self-paced courses on using the platform, project-based learning, flipped classrooms, and gamification, along with teacher support.

Pricing

The free Basic plan costs 0.00 USD per free. It includes 20 interactive activities to assign without limits and 10 supported assignments. It is a practical starting point for teachers whose course fits those caps; the supported-assignment limit may constrain broader classroom use.

Pro Teacher costs 13.75 USD per month, billed monthly/billed annually. It raises the offer to unlimited interactive activities and 120 supported assignments. Annual plans can add supported assignments to reach 250 for +$19.25/month. This plan is better suited to teachers who outgrow Basic, though even the expanded assignment total is capped.

Pro School has custom pricing. It includes supported assignments for every teacher, multilingual closed captions, standards-aligned content, and robust admin and security tools, making it the school-level option rather than an individual teacher plan.

Platforms

Edpuzzle is available on Android, iOS, and the web, with a Chrome extension for teachers. Its classroom integrations include learning management systems and tools such as Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams, Canvas, and Moodle.

Who it's for

Edpuzzle is best for teachers and educational institutions that want to build instruction around video, assign it to students, and see progress while students work independently. It is less suitable when a teacher needs more than 120 supported assignments on Pro Teacher without moving to the annual-plan add-on or a school plan, or when students must be tracked but cannot use Edpuzzle accounts.

Pros and cons

Pro: Teachers can adapt YouTube clips, personal uploads, or other teachers’ lessons with recorded voice and questions, giving them multiple starting points for video instruction.
Pro: Real-time progress monitoring and a Google Classroom workflow support assigning and following lessons without requiring a separate Edpuzzle account for students completing them through Classroom.
Pro: The free plan includes 20 interactive activities to assign without limits, giving teachers room to create activities before paying.
Con: Basic allows only 10 supported assignments, while Pro Teacher is capped at 120 unless an eligible annual plan adds assignments for +$19.25/month.
Con: Progress tracking requires student Edpuzzle accounts outside the open-class option, which does not provide tracking.
Con: Automatic question generation may be unavailable for videos without enough information, limiting its usefulness for some source material.

Verdict

Choose Edpuzzle if you teach with video and want to embed questions, assign lessons, and monitor student progress in one classroom-focused workflow. Its strongest case is the combination of lesson editing, assignment tracking, and classroom integrations; look elsewhere if the assignment caps or account requirement for tracking do not suit your students.
