Overview

Editsub suits people who need to edit subtitle files and generate captions or translations in one web-based workspace. It is a strong fit for occasional projects and collaborative editing, but the 10 MB subtitle-file cap and credit costs for longer transcription or translation may constrain heavier work.

It handles text edits, timing adjustments and format conversion across SRT, VTT, SBV, SUB, ASS and SSA files, with SRT and VTT export. Video-to-subtitle accepts a broad range of audio and video formats, with a maximum media size of 3072 MB. That large media allowance does not extend to subtitle uploads, which are capped at 10 MB.

Without an account, local audio or video files up to 10 minutes can be transcribed free. Longer transcription and translation require credits. Shared project links let multiple users work on the same project at once. For more options in this category, see Subtitle Software.

Key features

Timing and AI assistance

Frame-accurate timing, batch shifting, waveform synchronization and real-time preview give editors both fine control over individual cues and tools for larger timing corrections. The AI co-pilot flags reading-speed, timing, overlap, gap, line-length and transcription issues, and can fix or rewrite cues. This should help with routine cleanup, though editors should still review its changes.

Transcription and translation

Automatic captioning turns supported local media into subtitles, and AI translation covers more than 100 languages. The no-login, free transcription option is useful for short clips; longer files and translation draw on credits, so regular or lengthy work needs a paid allowance or credit pack.

Privacy and collaboration

Subtitle files handled in a browser session without an account are not stored on EditSub's servers. Account files are stored securely and accessible only to the user. EditSub says transmissions are encrypted and that it does not share personal information or subtitle content with third parties. Shared project links support simultaneous editing, making the tool more practical for small teams than a strictly solo workflow. Users retain rights to subtitles they create and may use them commercially.

Bug reports and feature suggestions can be sent through the in-app Feedback button or by email to support.

Pricing

The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and allows 10 subtitle files. It is a reasonable starting point for occasional editing, but its file cap and the credit requirement for longer transcription or translation limit ongoing use.

Pro costs 4.00 USD per year (billed $48 per year) and includes 1,500 credits per month, approximately 13 hours of transcription. That monthly allowance makes it the clearest fit for recurring captioning, while users with irregular demand may prefer a one-time pack. The price is presented as $4 per user per month on annual billing.

Starter credit pack costs 5.00 USD per month as a one-time pack and includes 1,000 credits; Standard credit pack costs 20.00 USD per month as a one-time pack and includes 5,000 credits. These are credit bundles rather than recurring subscriptions. The separate Starter pack costs 5.00 USD per once for 1,000 credits, and Standard pack costs 20.00 USD per once for 5,000 credits; credits in these packs never expire. The once-off packs suit occasional bursts of work, while the larger pack provides more credits without expiration.

Platforms

Editsub is web-based, and its listed platforms are web, Linux, macOS and Windows. The web editor keeps the workflow accessible across desktop systems without limiting it to one operating system.

Who it's for

Choose Editsub if you want subtitle editing, precise timing tools, transcription and multilingual translation together, especially when multiple people need access to a shared project. It is less suitable for projects built around subtitle files larger than 10 MB or for users who need substantial transcription and translation without monitoring credit use.

Pros and cons

Broad format support: it can edit six subtitle formats and export SRT or VTT, useful when projects arrive in different formats.
Detailed timing controls: frame-accurate editing, waveform synchronization and batch shifting cover both precise and track-wide adjustments.
Useful short-file free option: transcription of local media up to 10 minutes works without signing in.
Shared editing: project links allow simultaneous collaboration rather than requiring each person to work separately.
Two meaningful limits: subtitle uploads stop at 10 MB, and longer transcription or translation requires credits.
Plan choice needs care: recurring Pro billing and one-time credit packs serve different usage patterns, and the monthly credit allowance matters for sustained work.

Alternatives

Amara is another freemium web option, with an API and open-source AGPL licensing; consider it if those characteristics better suit your workflow.
Jubler is a free desktop subtitle editor for Linux, macOS and Windows. Pick it for a desktop workflow, bearing in mind that VLC is required for video preview and audio waveform.
SRTGen offers a free tier with SRT, VTT and TXT export, a five-minute screen-recording limit and 2 GB of storage. It may suit a screen-recording localization workflow.
Subtitle Edit is a free, open-source subtitle editor for Windows, macOS and Linux; choose it if you prefer that approach over Editsub's web-based editing and credit-based AI workflows.
Checksub is a paid web service with a free trial and a Junior plan at 18.00 USD per month, including two hours of credits per month, one translation per project, 20 GB storage and a 4 GB upload limit. Compare it if those stated allowances suit your needs better.
Zubtitle has a free Bootstrapper plan for two videos per month, with a watermark and resolutions up to 720p. Consider it if those free-video limits fit your work.
Subtitle Composer is a free Linux option with no paid plans; it may suit Linux users seeking a free desktop alternative.
Aegisub is a free option for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Verdict

Editsub is a good choice for subtitle editors who want precise timing tools alongside transcription, translation and shared project access. Its strongest case is the breadth of that combined workflow; look elsewhere if your subtitle files exceed 10 MB or your regular AI workload makes the credit limits a poor fit.
