Overview

The free plan combines unlimited data, no artificial speed limits and no ads, but connects one device at a time to randomly selected servers in 10 countries. That makes it a credible option for occasional use on one device, not a flexible choice for a household or anyone who needs to choose a location.

VPN Plus and Proton Unlimited support 10 VPN devices. Proton Unlimited adds other premium Proton products and 500 GB of storage, so its appeal depends on wanting that wider bundle rather than VPN access alone. The service supports streaming and torrenting, and includes a kill switch and WireGuard support.

Proton VPN is made by Proton AG, founded in 2014 and based in Geneva, Switzerland. Proton describes the service as open-source and no-logs, and says it has undergone an independent no-logs audit.

Key features

Privacy and protocols

Traffic is encrypted with AES-256 or ChaCha20 using WireGuard or OpenVPN. An independently audited no-logs approach and open-source software are meaningful privacy credentials, while a kill switch adds a safeguard if a VPN connection drops. These points make Proton VPN a stronger fit for privacy-conscious users than a service offering no comparable assurance in the facts available here.

Network, speed and filtering

Paid access advertises more than 20,000 servers across more than 140 countries. That breadth should matter to users who need a wider choice of locations; the free plan instead assigns servers randomly in 10 countries. VPN Accelerator is said to increase speeds by up to 400%, but that is a stated potential improvement, not a guarantee of any particular speed.

NetShield uses DNS filtering to block ads, trackers, phishing scams, malicious websites and malware. That gives users a layer of filtering alongside the VPN connection, rather than requiring a separate blocker for those categories.

Streaming and torrenting

Proton VPN supports both streaming and torrenting, making it more versatile than a VPN intended only for basic browsing. The facts do not establish performance with particular services or locations, so users who depend on a specific streaming catalog should not assume every connection will suit that purpose.

Pricing

Proton Free

Proton Free costs 0.00 USD per free, requires no credit card and includes unlimited data on one device at a time. It has no artificial speed limits or ads, but users cannot choose freely among its randomly selected servers in 10 countries. Choose it for no-cost use on a single device; look elsewhere if simultaneous connections or location choice is essential.

VPN Plus

VPN Plus is shown at 0.00 USD per month, billed at $0.00 for the first month and renewing at $0.00 every month. It supports 10 devices and lists access to 20,000+ servers in 140+ countries, with a 30-day money-back guarantee. Those terms make it the more direct step up for people who need multiple devices and broader server choice. Subscriptions can be canceled at any time, and payments can be refunded in full within 30 days.

Proton Unlimited

Proton Unlimited is also shown at 0.00 USD per month, with $0.00 for the first month and $0.00 on every monthly renewal. It supports 10 VPN devices and includes all premium Proton products plus 500 GB of storage. It suits readers who want the broader Proton bundle; for VPN alone, VPN Plus already supports the same number of devices. The displayed price and renewal terms are unusual enough that readers should confirm the applicable charge before subscribing.

Proton VPN accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, PayPal and Proton credits. VPN Plus includes priority support, and support channels also include help, contact and live chat.

Platforms

Apps are available for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, as well as browsers, Chromebook, Android TV, Apple TV and Fire TV. That range covers desktop, mobile and several TV devices, though the free plan's one-device-at-a-time cap limits how broadly it can be used at once.

Who it's for

Proton VPN is a good fit for privacy-minded users who value an independently audited no-logs service, and for people who want to try an uncapped free VPN without ads. VPN Plus is the more suitable choice for users needing up to 10 devices and a large server network. Proton Unlimited makes sense when its other premium Proton products and storage are useful too.

It is less suitable for free users who need simultaneous connections or control over server location. People comparing paid VPNs should also weigh the stated $0.00 monthly charge and renewal terms carefully rather than treating them as a typical ongoing price.

Verdict

Proton VPN is a strong choice for people who want a privacy-focused service with a genuinely uncapped free tier, or paid access across 10 devices. Its audited no-logs positioning, broad platform support and extensive advertised network are the main reasons to choose it. Look elsewhere if free server choice or multi-device use matters most, and confirm the paid renewal terms before relying on the displayed price.
