Overview

Eclipse IDE is a free desktop development environment built on an extensible platform, with separate packages for different languages and development areas. It suits developers who want to assemble a workflow around Java, C/C++, web, embedded, or other supported work. Its breadth and plugin model are strengths, but choosing the right package and checking project-specific licensing are part of the setup.

The Eclipse Foundation, an international non-profit based in Brussels, stewards the community; the foundation was formed in January 2004, while the Eclipse project dates to 2001. The platform is intended both for building integrated tools and for creating rich client applications. Eclipse Public License 2.0 is the IDE plan’s stated license, while the Foundation uses EPL as the default for projects unless their documentation says otherwise.

Key features

Java development

The 2026-09 release supports Java 26 and includes tooling for Java development. Projects on Java 25 or later get a wizard for compact source files, and a quick assist converts enhanced for loops to forEach statements. These targeted assists help with newer language patterns and routine edits; the Java package also brings together a Java IDE, Git client, XML editor, and Maven and Gradle integration, making it a practical starting point for Java work.

Packages and extensibility

Packages cover Java, Enterprise Java and web, C/C++, Java and DSL, embedded C/C++, PHP, and other development areas. That range lets users start with a setup aimed at their work rather than treating one language as the whole product. Platform plugins, distributed through Eclipse Marketplace, extend the environment further, though the range means users should choose deliberately rather than assume every package includes every tool.

Shared platform tools

Find and replace includes regular-expression content assist, the console has zoom controls, and search filters are available in Problems, Tasks, and Bookmarks views. These are modest workflow improvements: they make navigation and inspection more adjustable without changing the fact that Eclipse is a broad desktop environment. Spring support, JavaFX support, database tools, and remote development are also supported.

Security and support

The Eclipse Foundation provides project security support covering vulnerability management and reporting, repository management guidance, and developer training. Users can also seek community support in the Eclipse chat space and report issues through the project’s problem-reporting process. This gives projects and users defined community channels, rather than a stated commercial support plan.

Pricing

Eclipse IDE costs 0.00 USD per free under the Eclipse IDE plan, which is free and open source under Eclipse Public License 2.0. There is no paid tier or trial to weigh against the free edition: it is the choice for individual developers and teams seeking the Eclipse environment without a software charge. The license distinction still matters for reuse or distribution; the Foundation’s default EPL policy does not override the documentation for an individual project.

Platforms

The Eclipse Installer and packages are offered for Windows, macOS, and Linux. That desktop coverage suits developers who want the same general package ecosystem across the major desktop operating systems; Android and iOS are not among the supported platforms.

Who it's for

Eclipse is best suited to developers who need a customizable desktop IDE, especially Java developers who value the bundled Git, XML, Maven, and Gradle tools, and developers whose work fits the C/C++, embedded, web, PHP, or other package families. Plugin support is useful when a base package needs to grow. It is less compelling for someone seeking a narrowly defined beginner environment or a mobile-native IDE, and package choice can require more consideration than a single-purpose editor.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free and open source under EPL 2.0, with no paid plan required to use the IDE.
Pros: Packages span multiple development areas, and Marketplace plugins can add functionality.
Pros: The Java Developers package combines core Java work with Git, XML, Maven, and Gradle tools.
Pros: Java 26 support and focused assists address current Java workflows.
Cons: The range of packages and plugins means users must select and maintain a setup suited to their project.
Cons: Project licensing can differ from the default EPL policy, so the IDE’s license should not be assumed to cover every Eclipse project.

Alternatives

For another free desktop Java environment, Apache NetBeans is a reasonable alternative, with commercial and non-commercial use under Apache License 2.0. Choose BlueJ instead when a free Java environment designed for beginners is the priority. IntelliJ IDEA offers free core Java and Kotlin functionality as well as a paid Ultimate subscription, so it suits readers weighing a free core against a subscription option. Java-Editor is another free choice and also supports Android.

For a focused Spring extension in the Eclipse ecosystem, Spring Tools for Eclipse is free and open source. Spring Integration is instead a self-hosted, Apache 2.0-licensed framework used as a Java/Spring application dependency, not a desktop IDE. Processing is a free, open-source alternative. Browse our Java IDEs, C++ IDEs, embedded development IDEs, or Minecraft mod development tools if you are comparing within a particular category. CS++ Java IDE is another option.

Verdict

Choose Eclipse IDE if you want a free, extensible desktop environment with packages for several development areas, particularly Java with Git and build-tool integration. Its strongest case is breadth without a software fee; look elsewhere if you want a beginner-first environment or prefer a more narrowly scoped tool with less package and plugin selection.
