Overview

Duolingo is a learning app for people who want to build a regular study habit across languages and a couple of other subjects. It is strongest as a flexible, low-cost starting point for bite-sized practice, rather than a reason to choose a paid plan before you know what you need.

Its lessons adapt to a learner’s level and pace, and offline study makes it useful when connectivity is unreliable. Learners who want longer, more structured instruction or clear published subscription terms may want to compare alternatives before committing.

Key features

Several subjects: Duolingo offers 40 listed languages, plus chess and math. That breadth suits curious learners, though it does not make the app a specialist tool for any one subject.
Practice across language skills: Lessons cover reading, writing, listening, and speaking, with speech practice available. This makes it more rounded than a vocabulary-only approach, while learners focused on conversation may still prefer a dedicated speaking tool.
Adaptive study: Lessons adjust to the learner’s level and pace; placement tests and personalized review help direct practice. That can make short sessions more relevant to beginners and returning learners.
Habit-building format: Quick lessons, game-like features, challenges, and reminders encourage frequent practice. The short format is convenient, but it may not suit learners who prefer extended lessons.
Offline lessons: Offline study is supported, a practical advantage for learners who need to practice away from a reliable connection.
English test: The Duolingo English Test is described as fast, affordable, and AI-enabled, and intended to let users take the test wherever and whenever they perform best.

Duolingo describes its teaching methods as research-backed and says its learning works. That is a company claim, not a quantified promise of results, so learners should judge whether its format fits their goals.

Pricing

Duolingo uses a freemium model. The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and gives learners a way to study without a subscription, making it the sensible starting point for casual use or for deciding whether the short-lesson approach suits them.

Super Duolingo and Duolingo Max are listed subscription products, but no prices or plan inclusions are provided for them; they have custom pricing. The available plan terms do not establish what the subscriptions add, so readers should compare the terms before paying. Duolingo for Business and Duolingo for Schools are also offered, with custom pricing.

Platforms

Duolingo is available on Android, iOS, macOS, and the web, with cloud and mobile deployment. Its mobile apps are available through the Apple App Store and Google Play. The company is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and was founded in 2011.

Who it's for

Duolingo is a good fit for learners who want low-friction daily practice, an adaptive starting point, and the option to study offline. Its mix of language skills and additional subjects also suits people who want one app for light learning across different interests. Learners whose priority is intensive conversation practice, or who need specific paid-plan features before subscribing, should compare alternatives first.

Pros and cons

Pro: Free learning access. The 0.00 USD Free plan lets learners begin without a subscription.
Pro: Practice adapts to the learner. Level- and pace-adjusted lessons, placement tests, and personalized review help make practice less one-size-fits-all.
Pro: Offline lessons and multiple platforms. Learners can study offline and use Android, iOS, macOS, or web versions.
Con: Short sessions are not for everyone. The bite-sized lesson format may frustrate learners looking for longer, more sustained instruction.
Con: Subscription decisions require care. Super Duolingo and Duolingo Max are listed, but their prices and inclusions are not established here, so it is difficult to weigh their cost against the free plan.
