Overview

Milkie is a paywall SDK for developers building subscription access into Next.js apps. It best suits teams that want to control access within their own app and use Stripe for payments. Its focused scope is a strength, though the required backend routes add setup work.

Key features

Gates for pages and content

With the PaywallGate component, developers can protect a whole page, a section at the layout level, or an individual component. Component-level gates allow free and premium material to coexist on one page, useful for offering a preview alongside subscriber-only content. The metered-paywall example allows a limited amount of free access per month, giving visitors a sample before a subscription prompt. Registration walls and entitlement rules are supported; one-time payments are not.

Checkout, subscriptions, and sign-in

Checkout sends users to Stripe's hosted page, and Stripe webhooks update subscription status in real time so access can respond promptly to subscription changes. Milkie works with NextAuth, Clerk, Lucia, Supabase, and other authentication providers. Its AuthGate component is for content that requires sign-in but not a subscription, while customizable interfaces, messaging, and styling give developers control over the paywall presentation.

Built-in safeguards include callback URL validation, idempotency keys, personal-information sanitization, Stripe webhook signature verification, and email normalization. The quick start requires three API routes for subscription status, checkout, and Stripe webhooks. That is a meaningful backend commitment for an SDK, even if it gives developers a direct role in app integration.

Milkie is open source under the MIT license. Multi-tenancy, a developer dashboard, a webhook relay service, and multiple subscription tiers remain roadmap items, so teams that need those capabilities now should look elsewhere.

Pricing

The Milkie plan costs 0.00 USD per free and is open source under the MIT license. It includes metered paywalls, registration walls, and entitlement rules, with Stripe as the payment processor. There is no paid tier or seat or quota limit stated; the metered-access example itself allows limited free use per month, but no numeric allowance is given. One-time payments are not supported. The free plan makes Milkie a low-cost fit for developers comfortable implementing the required routes, but it does not provide a ready-made dashboard or the planned multi-tier controls.

Platforms

Milkie is for web apps built with Next.js. It is not presented as a mobile or multi-platform publishing service.

Who it's for

Choose Milkie if you are building a Next.js app and want granular subscription gates, monthly metering, and Stripe checkout while retaining control over your authentication and presentation. It is less suitable for publishers seeking a turnkey service, multiple subscription tiers today, or one-time sales.

Pros and cons

Pros: Page-, section-, and component-level gating supports varied access models; monthly metering can provide a free sample; MIT licensing and authentication integrations leave room to adapt the implementation.
Cons: The setup requires three API routes; Stripe is the supported processor; one-time payments are unavailable; several broader capabilities remain roadmap items.

Alternatives

Browse paywall software for a wider category comparison. Consider Pelcro if you need Android, iOS, API, and web coverage or a customer-based plan structure: its free plan covers 100 customers, while Advanced is 450.00 USD per month for up to 2,000 customers. Cleeng is another multi-platform option, with a free Merchant Basic plan for up to 10k subscribers that includes global payment processing, local tax calculation, and fraud and chargeback management.

Content Credits SDK is a free web and API alternative centered on the Content Credits idea. codoc offers a free content-sales plan and a 9,800.00 JPY per month Pro plan. Pigeon has a free WordPress demo that does not allow transactions and a Publishers plan at 99.00 USD per month. Uix Page Builder is a free web and self-hosted option. Paperwall is a GPL-3.0 open-source alternative available for self-hosting. PostGate is a free web option with a 5% platform fee on successful transactions, plus Stripe processing fees.

Verdict

Milkie is a good fit for developers who want to add subscription gates to a Next.js app without paying for the SDK, especially when they value control over content placement and already plan to use Stripe. Choose another tool if you need one-time payments, multiple subscription tiers now, or a broader platform that avoids implementing three API routes.
