Overview

nwipe is free, Linux software for securely erasing entire block devices, from a command line or an ncurses interface. It is best suited to administrators and technically capable users who need to wipe disks individually or in parallel. The breadth of erase methods and reporting makes it a capable disk-wiping choice, though its required runtime dependency and interactive-only hardware sanitization constrain automated use.

Key features

Erase methods include zero and one fills, DoD and Gutmann wipes, verification passes, and BMB21-2019. Random-pattern methods let users select a generator, including cryptographically secure AES-256-CTR and ChaCha20. That range helps match a wipe to a chosen process, but users must decide which method fits rather than treating the options as interchangeable.

For supported drives, the ncurses interface offers ATA and NVMe hardware-native block erase, cryptographic erase, and pattern overwriting. These options are GUI-only and cannot be batched with automated multi-drive commands such as autonuke. Legacy ATA Secure Erase and its freeze-lock handling are unsupported, so workflows that depend on either are a poor fit.

nwipe can erase multiple disks in parallel; the project illustrates six drives at once. Its I/O modes are automatic, direct, and cached, with automatic mode falling back to cached I/O if direct I/O is unsupported. This fallback offers a practical accommodation for devices that do not support direct I/O.

The tool can generate a three-page PDF certificate. SMART data in the certificate depends on the recommended smartmontools package, while dmidecode and smartmontools are also recommended for features including HPA/DCO detection. hdparm is required at runtime, so it must be present for nwipe to run.

nwipe is a Linux fork of dwipe, originally used by Darik's Boot and Nuke, created to bring that erase engine to Linux distributions with newer hardware support. The project welcomes bug reports, feature requests, and pull requests on GitHub; bug reports should include distribution, nwipe version, hardware details, logs, and command-line options. The repository uses the GNU GPL version 2.0.

Pricing

nwipe is free: its plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes the command-line and ncurses interfaces under GPL-2.0. There is no paid tier or trial to weigh against it. The trade-off is that using it requires Linux and a working hdparm runtime dependency.

Platforms

nwipe runs on Linux and can be used in self-hosted environments. It supports disk wiping, including SSDs and removable media, and can produce erasure certificates. For a bootable image, the project points users to ShredOS, which includes nwipe and is available for x86_64 and i686 systems with legacy BIOS and UEFI support. The README also names netboot.xyz, DiskDump, Parted Magic, SystemRescue, GParted Live, and Grml among distributions that include nwipe.

Who it's for

Choose nwipe if you need a free Linux tool for whole-disk erasure, want to select among several wipe methods, or need to process multiple drives in parallel. Its certificate output can suit users who need an erasure record, with SMART data dependent on supporting tools. Look elsewhere if your process requires unattended hardware sanitization, legacy ATA Secure Erase, or a platform other than Linux.

Pros and cons

Pros: Multiple erase methods and selectable random-data generators give users meaningful control over whole-disk wipes.
Pros: Parallel operation can handle several drives at once, and PDF certificates provide an erasure record.
Pros: Automatic I/O mode falls back to cached I/O when direct I/O is unsupported.
Cons: hdparm is required at runtime, adding a dependency to installation and operation.
Cons: Hardware sanitize is interactive-only and unavailable to automated multi-drive commands such as autonuke.
Cons: Legacy ATA Secure Erase and freeze-lock handling are not supported.

Alternatives

Data Erasure Software and Disk Wiping Software are broader directories for comparing options; File Shredder Software is the relevant directory when the need is file shredding rather than whole-disk erasure.

Choose Active@ KillDisk if you need Linux, macOS, or Windows support and are willing to consider a freemium product, with personal plans priced at 64.95 USD per once or 79.95 USD per once. DriveWipe is another free option spanning Linux, macOS, and Windows; it may suit users who need broader platform coverage. For Windows file and folder shredding rather than Linux disk wiping, File Shredder is free and includes five shredding algorithms and free-space wiping.

BCWipe Total WipeOut is a paid alternative with a free trial and Linux, macOS, and Windows support. CBL Data Shredder is a free Windows option for low-level drive formatting and customizable wipe methods. Strix Disk Cleaner is a free, open-source option for Windows and Linux with offline operation.

Blancco Drive Eraser is a paid alternative with a free trial for Linux and Windows, with plans including certified erasure. ASCOMP Secure Eraser is a freemium Windows alternative; its Professional private license is 29.90 USD per once for a maximum of two systems.

Verdict

Choose nwipe for free, Linux-based whole-disk erasure when method choice, parallel wiping, and certificate output matter. Its strongest case is the combination of flexible wipe options and multi-drive operation; look elsewhere if your workflow requires automated hardware sanitization, legacy ATA Secure Erase, or cross-platform support.
