Overview

DosKit is a browser-based DOS environment built on js-dos WebAssembly. It suits people who want a DOS prompt they can install on a device and use offline after an initial visit. Its strongest case is convenient access across desktop and mobile; browser requirements and limited older iOS support make compatibility worth checking first.

Key features

DosKit starts at a functional DOS command prompt, rather than requiring users to begin with a particular application. URL parameters can also load applications such as Second Reality and Impulse Tracker, a useful route for sharing or reopening a specific DOS experience.

As a Progressive Web App, DosKit can be installed on desktop and mobile devices. Service-worker caching enables offline use after the first visit, which is valuable when connectivity is unreliable. It does not remove the need for a compatible browser or sufficient device memory: WebAssembly and JavaScript are required, and at least 2GB of RAM is recommended.

Input options include standard DOS keyboard keys, including function keys and special characters, as well as mobile touch controls and gamepad support. Sound Blaster and AdLib emulation provide audio output. DosKit uses js-dos 8.3.20 WebAssembly and supports DOSBox and DOSBox-X backends; the command interface also offers pause, resume, mute, unmute, screenshot, and filesystem read/write commands. These capabilities make it more than a fixed launcher, though users who need a dedicated desktop emulator may prefer software built for that setting.

Pricing

DosKit is free: its Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and is MIT-licensed open source. There are no paid tiers or quotas described, so there is no upgrade path to weigh against the free edition. The MIT license applies to DosKit; js-dos and DOSBox are listed under GPL-2.0 licenses.

Platforms

DosKit supports web, Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. Browser compatibility is not universal: Internet Explorer is unsupported, and iOS Safari versions earlier than 15 have limited WebAssembly support. Users on older Apple devices should check compatibility before relying on it.

Who it's for

DosKit is a good fit for people who want a free, installable browser-based DOS prompt, need offline access after setup, or value keyboard, touch, and gamepad input. It is less suitable for users whose browser lacks WebAssembly support, whose device falls short of the recommended memory, or who want a conventional desktop-first emulator.

Pros and cons

Pros: Offline PWA use after the first visit makes DOS access practical without a continuing connection.
Pros: A working prompt, application deep links, and several input methods suit both command-line use and selected applications across device types.
Pros: Free, MIT-licensed source is available, with no paid plan required.
Cons: WebAssembly and JavaScript are mandatory, and 2GB of RAM is recommended, which narrows the range of devices that are a comfortable fit.
Cons: Internet Explorer is unsupported, while older iOS Safari versions have limited WebAssembly support.

Alternatives

For a browser-based option with a different storage trade-off, consider DOS Browser: its free plan uses indexed browser storage that can be cleared and does not offer cross-device play, while js-dos Premium adds cloud saves and progress sync at a price not stated. Choose DOSBox Staging for a free Linux, macOS, or Windows option intended for personal, low-stakes use and supplied without warranty. DOSBox is another free, open-source choice for Linux, macOS, and Windows.

DOSBox Pure is a standalone desktop emulator for Linux, macOS, and Windows, free to download with donations welcome. Android users considering a mobile alternative can look at Magic DosBox, which has a free Lite plan. dosbox-automation is a free option for API, Linux, and Windows users; DOSBox Optionals is available for Windows; and dosdoor is available for macOS and Linux. Browse the MS-DOS Emulators category for more choices.

Verdict

Choose DosKit if you want a free DOS environment that runs in a browser, can be installed as a PWA, and remains usable offline after its first visit. Its prompt, input variety, and application deep links give it real flexibility across devices. Look elsewhere if your browser or memory is a poor fit, or if a desktop emulator better matches your workflow.
