Overview

Dorico brings notation, playback, arrangement and publishing into one workflow. MIDI and MusicXML import and export make it practical to move work between tools; audio and graphics export support playable or shareable output. For ensemble work, it can move music between players, expand or reduce it across instruments, and create fully voiced parts from chord symbols.

Flexible input and editing let composers revisit decisions as scores develop. Hundreds of sounds, more than 30 effects processors and a full audio Mixer add playback options, while automatic formatting reduces routine layout work. Dorico Pro adds thousands of customization options for users who need more control over the finished score.

Key features

Score exchange: MIDI and MusicXML import and export support score workflows across applications; audio and graphics export provide other ways to share the result.
Arrangement and parts: Move music between players, resize it across instruments and generate voiced parts from chord symbols. These tools suit changing ensembles and multi-part arrangements.
Publishing and playback: Automatic formatting and an extensive set of sounds and audio tools help prepare and hear a score. Pro’s additional engraving controls matter most when default layouts are not enough.
Collaboration: Sharing and team workflows support work with performers or collaborators, alongside tools for preparing scores and parts.

Pricing

Dorico uses a freemium model, with free access and a 60-day trial. The free options make it possible to start without buying a desktop edition, but the editions have different boundaries.

Dorico SE 6: Free forever on macOS and Windows, for writing music for up to eight players. It includes MusicXML and MIDI import and export. That cap makes it a sensible starting point for smaller ensembles, but not for larger scores.
Dorico for iPad: The full version is a free download, with music notation and playback; optional paid functionality is available. The iPad edition can produce sheet music to play, share or print.
Dorico Elements 6: Paid versions start at ₹10,913.00, including 15% VAT. Elements includes music notation and engraving features and MusicXML and MIDI import and export. It is the paid entry point for readers who need more than SE’s eight-player scope.
Dorico Pro 6: ₹63,194.00, including 15% VAT. Its advanced engraving and layout capabilities, proofreading panel and thousands of customization options suit users who need detailed control over score presentation. The large price jump makes it harder to justify for basic notation alone.

The listed paid prices include 15% VAT. The pricing terms shown for paid editions do not establish a recurring billing period, so buyers should not assume a monthly subscription from the quoted price.

Platforms

Dorico is available for desktop and iPad. SE is specified for macOS and Windows, while the iPad version provides a mobile route for notation, playback and sheet music output. Desktop users who need Linux should consider another option.

Who it's for

Dorico is a strong fit for composers and arrangers who work with multiple players, revise orchestration, or prepare parts for performers. Its education use, tutorials and documentation also make it relevant to schools, colleges and universities. Readers with simple notation needs or a strict budget may prefer a free alternative; the paid Pro edition makes the most sense when advanced engraving and layout control are important.

Pros and cons

Pro: MIDI and MusicXML import and export, plus audio and graphics export, support several practical ways to exchange and deliver scores.
Pro: Player-to-player arrangement, voiced parts from chord symbols and collaboration tools cover more than basic score entry.
Pro: A free iPad version and free desktop SE edition give users two ways to begin without an upfront purchase.
Con: SE stops at eight players, limiting its use for larger ensembles.
Con: Pro costs ₹63,194.00 including 15% VAT, a substantial commitment for readers who do not need its advanced engraving and layout controls.

Verdict

Choose Dorico if you need a capable notation workflow for arranging, parts and polished score output, particularly across desktop and iPad. Its free editions lower the barrier to entry, and Pro adds substantial engraving control. Look elsewhere if the eight-player SE cap is too restrictive or Pro’s ₹63,194.00 price is difficult to justify for your needs.
