Overview

Striim is built around ongoing data movement rather than a one-off transfer: it captures changes and streams them onward, with continuous replication and database migration both in scope. That makes it a candidate for keeping systems synchronized and building persistent integrations. For a narrow migration with no continuing pipeline requirement, its streaming capabilities may be more than the task calls for.

Its distributed streaming SQL supports continuous queries and joins against historical caches, with processing designed for workloads reaching billions of events per minute. That scale is relevant to demanding environments, though it should not be confused with the much smaller Developer allowance. Organizations can run Striim as a managed cloud service or deploy its platform on-premise or in a self-managed cloud.

Key features

Streaming SQL and connectors

Continuous queries and historical-cache joins let teams process live data as it moves, rather than limiting the platform to copying records unchanged. Striim says it connects hundreds of enterprise sources and targets; examples include Oracle, Kafka, Salesforce, Snowflake, and Google BigQuery. This breadth can suit mixed enterprise estates, while the available examples do not guarantee a particular connector will fit a team's requirements.

Schema changes and monitoring

Striim can capture schema changes and gives teams a choice about what happens next: propagate changes to consumers, or stop and alert for manual resolution. The choice is useful when some downstream systems can adapt automatically but others need deliberate review. Pipeline health, end-to-end latency, and table-level metrics are visible through monitoring, and REST APIs support integration with other systems.

Deployment and security

Striim Cloud is a managed service on AWS, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. Its stated security provisions include SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA, PCI DSS, customer-managed encryption keys, and private and on-premise networking, a useful fit for organizations with demanding controls. Striim Platform instead lets teams deploy their own compute on-premise or in a self-managed cloud, with clustered high availability and self-managed monitoring and alerts. That flexibility carries an operational trade-off: Platform customers run the deployment themselves.

Pricing

Striim uses a freemium model. Striim Developer is free and allows up to 25 million events per month. It includes trial access to premium, standard, and more than 200 preview application connectors, making it a sensible entry point for learning and small-scale use. The monthly event cap limits its role for sustained, larger-volume workloads.

Striim Cloud and Striim Platform both use custom pricing, so teams should expect to contact Striim to establish cost. Cloud includes automated data pipelines, dedicated compute and networking, horizontally scalable distributed pipelines, and Customer Success and Premium Support. It suits teams that want Striim to manage the service and need the stated security controls. Platform includes automated pipelines, customer-deployed compute, clustered deployments with high availability, self-managed monitoring and alerts, and horizontal scaling; it fits organizations that need control over their own infrastructure and operations. No seat quota, paid-plan event allowance, trial duration, or renewal term is stated for these plans.

Platforms

Striim lists API, self-hosted, and web platforms. The deployment choice is material: Cloud runs as a managed service across AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure, while Platform can be run on-premise or in a self-managed cloud. Choose the former to avoid operating the Striim deployment; choose the latter when managing compute and monitoring internally is part of the requirement.

Who it's for

Striim is a strong fit for enterprise data teams that need continuous replication, streaming SQL, schema-change controls, and a deployment model that can match cloud or self-managed requirements. Developer is aimed at learning and small-scale use, not an unlimited free production pipeline. Teams without a need for ongoing streaming, or those unwilling to pursue custom pricing for larger deployments, should compare more narrowly scoped options.

Pros and cons

Pros: Streaming SQL, historical-cache joins, and large-scale processing support data transformation during continuous movement.
Pros: Schema changes can be propagated or stopped for manual handling, balancing automation with downstream control.
Pros: Managed cloud and self-managed deployment options cover different infrastructure preferences; Cloud also includes named compliance and encryption provisions.
Cons: Developer is capped at 25 million events per month, so it is not a free route to unlimited volume.
Cons: Both paid offerings require custom pricing, making cost comparison dependent on a sales conversation.
Cons: Self-managed Platform shifts compute, monitoring, and alert operations to the customer.

Alternatives

For a different replication approach, SymmetricDS has a free Community plan and broader listed platform coverage, including Android, iOS, desktop operating systems, and self-hosted deployment. Consider it when that coverage or its free Community option matters more than Striim's stated streaming SQL and managed-cloud choices.

Estuary offers a free plan and a Pay-as-you-go plan at 100.00 USD per month (billed billed monthly). It is worth comparing when a published monthly price for that tier is more useful than Striim's custom-priced paid plans.

Oracle GoldenGate offers a free perpetual-license option with a recipe-driven interface and Docker deployment. Consider it when those terms and deployment fit better than Striim's event-capped Developer tier or custom-priced paid plans.

Amazon Database Migration Service is a paid service with a free tier offering $100 in credits, with up to an additional $100 for activating foundational AWS services; credits are valid for up to 12 months. It is a comparison point for readers prioritizing that credit-based entry offer.

Fivetran Database Replication has a free plan with stated monthly active-row and model-run limits. Compare it when those usage measures better match how you want to assess a replication allowance than Striim's event cap.

Artie offers a free plan capped at up to 1M billable rows per month and up to two active pipelines, with backfills included and SOC 2 Type II. It may suit a smaller pipeline footprint where those limits and inclusions align.

PeerDB offers a free open-source plan for individuals with Docker setup, CDC, streaming query, and query-layer features. Consider it for an individual open-source workflow rather than Striim's managed enterprise deployment options.

TiCDC is another option to compare.

Verdict

Choose Striim when your team needs persistent enterprise pipelines with streaming SQL, explicit schema-change handling, and a choice between managed cloud and self-managed infrastructure. Its main advantage is the combination of processing, monitoring, and deployment flexibility in one platform. Look elsewhere if you need transparent paid pricing, a larger free allowance, or only a simple one-time migration.
