Overview

Dokiel is a structured authoring environment for technical documentation and training materials, aimed at technical writers and trainers in software, manufacturing, IT and support organizations. It is a strong fit when related publications need to share maintained content; teams wanting a conventional, free-form editor may prefer another approach.

Key features

Dokiel organizes material as reusable fragments, including concepts, operating processes, interactive screens and synoptic trees. A fragment can serve several documents, and changes flow through to each one, reducing duplicated maintenance. That pays off when instructions recur across guides or courses, but asks authors to work within Dokiel’s structured content model.

One source can generate user guides, tutorials, installation guides, specifications, reference websites, e-learning modules and self-assessments. PDF, web and SCORM outputs span printable documents, online reference and course delivery without separate source files. Variables, conditions, profiling and skins let teams adapt content and appearance for different audiences or contexts.

Writing, review and validation are supported in a client/server environment, making Dokiel suitable for collaborative production. XML standards underpin content storage and exchange. Deployment can be on an organization's infrastructure in client-server mode or hosted and administered by a service provider.

There are three implementation routes: install the Dokiel wsppack in SCENARIchain, use the Dokiel desktop application, or use MyScenari's desktop application and service. MyScenari online production and distribution is for Scenari association members; it supports only Opale, Dokiel and OptimOffice document models and does not allow additional models. Its service works through updated Brave, Chrome, Chromium on Linux deliveries, Edge, Opera and Vivaldi browsers. The Association Scenari says users own their content; personal data is not sold or transferred and is used only for anonymized internal statistics or important service notices. Documentation, tutorials, community training, a forum and service-provider assistance offer routes to support.

Pricing

Dokiel — 0.00 USD per free. The free, open-source Scenari publishing chain is available through desktop or SCENARIchain installation. It is the clear fit for teams able to handle their own setup and deployment; organizations seeking hosted MyScenari service should note its association membership requirement and restricted document-model selection.

Platforms

Dokiel supports Linux, macOS, Windows, web and self-hosted deployment. The desktop, SCENARIchain and hosted service routes give organizations different ways to implement it, though the hosted MyScenari option has the eligibility and model limits above.

Who it's for

Technical writers and trainers in software companies, manufacturing, IT management and support services are the intended users. Dokiel is especially compelling for teams maintaining overlapping documentation and training outputs that benefit from a shared source and coordinated review. It is less suited to authors who do not want to organize material as reusable structured fragments.

Pros and cons

Pro: Reuse across documents and update propagation reduce repeated editing when the same material appears in multiple publications.
Pro: PDF, web and SCORM output from one source spans documentation and e-learning needs.
Pro: Client-server review and validation support team workflows, with self-hosted and service-provider deployment options.
Con: Structured fragments impose a content model that may not suit authors seeking a free-form writing environment.
Con: MyScenari is limited to association members and three document models, with no option to install additional models.

Verdict

Choose Dokiel if your documentation or training team needs to maintain related publications from reusable structured content and publish them to PDF, web and SCORM. Its free, open-source publishing chain and team review support are persuasive; look elsewhere if you need unrestricted hosted model choice or a less structured authoring workflow.
