Overview

Every plan supports unlimited members, so audience size alone does not force an upgrade. The practical limits instead fall on the people running the community and the resources it consumes: staff seats, storage, monthly page views, and email. Discourse can be self-hosted or run on managed hosting, giving technically capable teams more control while letting others avoid running the software themselves.

The entire codebase is freely available on GitHub. Discourse says customers own their community and data and can export everything at any time. Integrations include GitHub, chat providers, Zendesk, and authentication providers. The platform powers more than 22,000 communities.

Key features

Moderation tools, private spaces, event hosting, and custom domains support communities that need more than an open discussion board. Mobile apps are available for both major mobile platforms. These capabilities suit member programs with distinct audiences and active moderation needs, though the plan quotas remain important for high-traffic communities and email-heavy activity.

Hosted plans include a 14-day free trial, with no credit card required up front. That lowers the risk of evaluating paid hosting, but it does not change the ongoing seat and usage limits.

Pricing

Discourse uses a freemium model. The free hosted plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes unlimited members, 2 staff seats, 500k monthly page views, 20k monthly emails, 10 categories, and 5GB storage. It is a credible starting point for a small team, but the two-seat staffing cap and category limit can constrain a growing moderation operation.

Pro costs 100.00 USD per month, billed monthly. It raises staff seats to 5, allows unlimited categories, increases monthly email to 100k and storage to 20GB, while retaining the free plan’s 500k monthly page-view allowance. Pro fits communities that have outgrown the free plan’s categories or storage, but need no more than five staff seats.

Business costs 500.00 USD per month, billed monthly. It includes 15 staff seats, priority support, standard migration services, unlimited categories, 300k monthly emails, 100GB storage, and 500k monthly page views. This is the stronger fit for a larger operating team that values migration help and priority support; the page-view allowance remains the same as Pro.

Enterprise has custom pricing and includes unlimited staff seats, 1M+ monthly page views, 1.5M+ monthly emails, unlimited categories, and 200GB+ storage. It is aimed at mission-critical communities whose security, scale, or support needs exceed the lower tiers.

Platforms

Discourse is available as self-hosted software or through managed hosting. Mobile apps are available for both major mobile platforms, so communities are not limited to browser access.

Who it's for

Choose Discourse if you need a community with moderation, private spaces, and events, and want the option to control hosting or use a managed service. The free plan suits a small staff team with moderate resource needs; Pro and Business suit organizations that need more staff capacity, storage, or email. Enterprise is the relevant tier when unlimited staff, higher traffic allowances, or enterprise authentication and uptime commitments matter.

Look elsewhere if your team needs a free hosted plan with more than two staff seats, or if your expected page views exceed 500k per month but Enterprise is not appropriate: Pro and Business keep that same page-view cap.

Pros and cons

Pros: Unlimited members on every plan makes the audience size predictable without a per-member tier change.
Pros: Self-hosting, open-source code, and data export give organizations options for control and portability.
Pros: The free plan includes 500k monthly page views and 20k monthly emails, a substantial no-cost allowance for getting started.
Cons: The free plan allows only 2 staff seats and 10 categories, which can limit a growing moderation team.
Cons: Pro and Business both cap monthly page views at 500k, so a traffic increase alone does not make either a solution for higher-volume needs.
Cons: The jump from 100.00 USD per month for Pro to 500.00 USD per month for Business is substantial, making priority support, migration, and added capacity the key reasons to upgrade.

Verdict

Discourse is a strong choice for organizations that want an open-source community platform with the flexibility to self-host or use managed hosting, plus meaningful free-tier capacity. Choose it for its control, unlimited members, and community-focused tools; look elsewhere if your team outgrows the lower plans’ staff or page-view limits and cannot justify Enterprise custom pricing.
