Overview

Foreman is a self-managed system for provisioning and managing physical and virtual servers. It is best suited to Linux administrators responsible for a varied server fleet; its broad lifecycle toolkit comes with real installation and upkeep demands.

For teams that want centralized control across on-premises and cloud infrastructure, Foreman is a capable free option. It is less suitable for organizations looking for a turnkey hosted service or without Linux administration expertise.

Key features

Foreman provisions bare-metal machines and resources across Amazon EC2, Google Compute Engine, OpenStack, Libvirt, oVirt and VMware. That breadth helps administrators coordinate a mixed environment from one place, though teams managing only a small or uniform estate may find the surrounding system more than they need. Host groups and bulk management support fleet organization, while reports flag healthy or outdated hosts and preserve historical changes for auditing and troubleshooting.

Configuration management support spans Puppet, Ansible, Chef and Salt. Foreman supports Puppet and Salt and collects Ansible facts and reports, giving administrators a way to bring configuration activity into the broader server-management workflow. The web frontend, REST API and Hammer CLI offer interactive and automated administration; API tasks include host registration and role assignment.

Fine-grained role-based access control can work with LDAP, FreeIPA or Microsoft Active Directory. Smart Proxy can run OpenSCAP scans on hosts and upload compliance reports, a useful addition for teams tracking security posture. Foreman itself is not FIPS-certified, even though it can run on a FIPS-enabled host. Its pluggable architecture allows extension, but operating the typical Foreman server, Smart Proxies and managed hosts remains an infrastructure responsibility.

Pricing

Foreman is free and open source, with a self-managed installation. The Foreman plan costs 0.00 USD per free. There is no paid plan described; the trade-off for avoiding subscription costs is that administrators must install and operate the system themselves. The installer configures multiple system components and requires 4 GB of memory, so the free price does not mean minimal deployment effort.

Platforms

Foreman is self-hosted, with web, API and Linux CLI interfaces. The Foreman 5.0 quickstart supports Enterprise Linux 9, Debian 12 and 13, and Ubuntu 22.04 and 24.04. Foreman server and Smart Proxy servers can run on Enterprise Linux 9; community packages are provided only for x86_64. Broader supported-platform coverage includes Amazon Linux, Enterprise Linux 8–10, Fedora, openSUSE/SUSE Linux Enterprise Server and Ubuntu, alongside Debian.

Who it's for

Foreman makes sense for system administrators who need to provision and manage anything from dozens to many thousands of servers, particularly across physical, virtual and cloud environments. Its automation, configuration integrations, access controls and audit history serve teams that want consistent oversight at fleet scale. Getting started requires a degree of Linux system administration knowledge, so it is not the right choice for users who need a managed service or a simple setup. Community help is available through Discourse and a public Matrix room, but the Matrix room is not an official support channel.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free, open-source self-hosting avoids a software subscription while supporting bare-metal and multiple cloud and virtualization environments.
Pros: Configuration integrations, fleet reporting, audit history and role-based access control bring useful operational oversight into the same management system.
Pros: Web, REST API and Hammer CLI provide different routes for administration and automation.
Cons: Installation requires Linux administration knowledge, at least 4 GB of memory and management of multiple system components.
Cons: The Smart Proxy can report OpenSCAP results, but Foreman itself is not FIPS-certified.
Cons: Community support is available, but the public Matrix room is not an official support channel.

Alternatives

Confluent is another free option with API, Linux, self-hosted and web platforms. Consider MetalSoft Bare Metal Orchestrator if you prefer a paid product with custom pricing. Digital Rebar Provision is a paid alternative with a free trial and annual custom pricing for its platform plan.

NVIDIA Infra Controller is a free option with API and self-hosted platforms. openQRM Enterprise offers a free community plan with community support and a plugin library, as well as a custom-priced enterprise plan with enterprise add-ons. AuroraBoot is a free, self-hosted open-source option that requires Docker or another container engine. Tengan is a paid, web-based alternative. NVIDIA Base Command Manager has a free-to-use plan capped at 8 accelerators per server, node or system, with no stated limit on servers, nodes or systems.

For a narrower search, browse Bare Metal Provisioning Software, OS Deployment Software, IT Configuration Management Software or IT Automation Software.

Verdict

Choose Foreman if Linux administrators need a free, self-managed control plane for provisioning and overseeing a mixed server fleet, with configuration integrations, audits and automation interfaces in the same system. Look elsewhere if your team cannot take on the installation and operating work, or needs Foreman itself to hold FIPS certification.
