Overview

Selenium combines code-driven browser control, a record-and-playback add-on, and distributed test execution. That makes it adaptable to different testing workflows, though it is a toolkit rather than a single managed testing service. The project began in 2004 at ThoughtWorks in Chicago, where Jason Huggins created its initial Core mode.

Its categories include Browser Automation Tools, Cross-Browser Testing Software, Browser Testing Software, End-to-End Testing Software, GUI Testing Software, and Functional Testing Software.

Key features

WebDriver and language bindings

WebDriver drives browsers locally or remotely and is a W3C Recommendation. Client bindings for .NET/C#, Ruby, Java, Python, and JavaScript let teams write tests in several established languages. This breadth is useful when a team wants browser automation integrated with its existing codebase, but it still calls for code authoring rather than a purely visual workflow.

IDE and browser coverage

Selenium IDE records and replays interactions as a browser add-on for Chrome, Firefox, and Edge. It offers a more approachable way to capture browser actions, although the project’s broader language bindings and browser-specific documentation extend beyond the IDE’s supported browsers. Documentation covers functionality for Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Safari.

Grid and driver management

Grid distributes tests across machines and combinations of browsers and operating systems. It can run as Standalone, Hub and Node, or Distributed, and the project links to Docker and Kubernetes deployment resources. The Grid guide names GitHub Actions and Jenkins as CI/CD examples. Selenium Manager can discover, download, and cache browser releases and drivers, reducing the driver setup work teams would otherwise need to handle.

Grid’s flexibility carries an important operational risk: it has no authentication by default. The project warns that an exposed Grid can give outsiders access to infrastructure, internal applications and files, or custom binary execution. Teams need to keep it behind a secure network, configure appropriate firewall permissions, and apply documented security measures; it is a poor choice for teams unable to own that responsibility. Selenium also does not support the latest Opera driver functionality, whose driver is officially unsupported.

Pricing

Selenium is free and open source. Its Selenium plan costs 0.00 USD per free and provides open-source browser automation tools and libraries. There are no paid tiers or per-seat costs in the plan described, making it suitable for individual developers and teams prepared to supply their own execution environment. The trade-off is that the plan does not turn Grid into a hosted, managed service.

Platforms

Selenium supports Linux, macOS, and Windows, as well as web and self-hosted use. It supports cross-browser testing, code-based test authoring, a self-hosted runner, and mobile web testing. This suits teams able to run automation in their own environments; platform support does not remove the need to configure and secure those environments.

Who it's for

Selenium is best for developers and QA teams who can write tests in one of its supported languages and want local or remote browser control, cross-browser coverage, or distributed execution. It is less suitable for teams seeking a turnkey hosted service or visual-only test authoring, and Grid requires an owner who can manage network security.

Pros and cons

Pros: WebDriver offers local and remote control across five language bindings, giving code-oriented teams room to fit browser tests into their existing development work.
Pros: Grid can distribute tests across machines and browser/OS combinations, with several deployment configurations and links to container orchestration resources.
Pros: Selenium Manager can discover, download, and cache browsers and drivers, easing a recurring part of browser automation setup.
Cons: Grid has no authentication by default and must be isolated and secured, adding significant operational responsibility.
Cons: The IDE add-on covers Chrome, Firefox, and Edge, while browser-specific documentation also covers Internet Explorer and Safari; the IDE is not a universal substitute for code-driven workflows.
Cons: Latest Opera driver functionality is unsupported, ruling out that use case.

Alternatives

For readers comparing options, Selenium appears among Browser Automation Tools and Cross-Browser Testing Software, alongside these alternatives:

TestMu AI is worth considering for a freemium option spanning web, desktop, mobile, and API platforms; its KaneAI Starter plan is 17.00 USD per month, billed annually, with one agent and 2,000 credits/month per agent.
pCloudy may fit teams seeking a paid browser cloud with a free trial; its Browser Cloud plan starts at 19.00 USD per month, billed $19/month, for one parallel test and 3,500+ browser and OS combinations.
BrowserStack Live is an option for users who prefer a paid live browser service with a free plan and trial; its Freelancer plan is 12.50 USD per month, billed annually, with 100 minutes of Live desktop and mobile access and one user/account.
TestCafe offers a free open-source framework under the MIT license, making it another free option for teams considering a browser test runner.
Browserling is a freemium alternative for readers considering browser testing across its supported platforms.
Katalon TestCloud provides a free local option with authoring, execution, and record-and-playback; consider it if those capabilities are a priority.
AWS Device Farm may suit teams looking for paid device-farm testing with a free trial; its desktop browser testing is charged at 0.01 USD per once, billed per instance minute.
TestMu AI Web Automation (formerly LambdaTest Web Automation) is another freemium option for web automation.

Verdict

Choose Selenium if your team can maintain code-based tests and wants free, flexible browser control with the option to distribute execution through Grid. Its main advantage is the breadth of languages and execution setups; look elsewhere if you need managed infrastructure, and do not deploy Grid without a secure network boundary.
