Overview

Descript automatically transcribes recordings, then lets users edit the text to change the underlying audio or video. For interviews, podcasts, and spoken-word video, removing a phrase or silence this way can be more direct than locating it on a timeline. Captions, filler-word and silence removal, and Studio Sound extend that workflow, but media-hour and AI-credit allowances make plan choice important for frequent production.

Underlord, its built-in AI co-editor, can write, edit, design, and generate visuals or voiceovers under the user's direction. Transcription supports 25 languages. Rooms records up to 10 participants on separate camera, microphone, and screen tracks. Shared projects, live collaboration, comments, and version history make the product useful for teams as well as solo creators.

Key features

Transcript-led editing and cleanup

Editing video by changing its transcript is Descript's defining advantage for spoken content. Automatic captions and translation help adapt recordings for different audiences, while Studio Sound reduces background noise and enhances voices. Green screen, eye contact, and AI speech add options for video and audio production.

Collaboration, exports, and control

Teams can comment through shared links and work with shared projects and version history. Admin controls cover users, permissions, and separate drives. Exports reach 4K on qualifying plans, and timeline export connects to Adobe Premiere, Final Cut Pro, Pro Tools, and more. The combination is valuable when editing and review span a team, but the 720p cap on Free makes that tier a limited export option.

Descript supports YouTube, TikTok, and LinkedIn reformatting. Its desktop app requires macOS 14 Sonoma or Windows 11 or newer; a web version is also available. Security provisions include SOC 2 Type II certification with annual audits, GDPR handling, AES-256 encryption for stored data, and TLS 1.2 for data in transit. Enterprise adds SAML SSO and SCIM provisioning.

Pricing

Descript is freemium, with paid plans starting at $16/user/mo (annual). A free trial is not offered. Plan allowances are consequential: media hours limit how much source material can be handled, while AI credits govern use of AI tools.

Free: $0.00 USD per free. It includes 60 minutes (1 hr) per month, 100 one-time AI credits, 720p local export, and 5GB cloud storage. This is a useful starting point, but the monthly hour allowance and one-time credits make it a poor fit for sustained production.
Hobbyist: $16.24 USD per month, billed per person / month. One person is included, with 10 media hours and 400 AI credits per month, plus 1080p watermark-free export. It suits an individual making modest amounts of content, but gives up 4K export and the larger quotas of higher tiers.
Creator: $24.35 USD per month, billed per person / month. It includes 30 media hours and 800 AI credits per month, with 4K watermark-free export. A team of 3 can be billed separately. This is the stronger fit for regular creators who need higher-resolution exports or room to scale beyond one editor.
Business: $50.65 USD per month, billed per person / month. It raises allowances to 40 media hours and 1,500 AI credits per month; a team of 5 can be billed separately. Priority support with an SLA makes it more appropriate for production teams that need support commitments, though it costs more than Creator.
Enterprise: custom pricing. It offers team-sized AI credits and media hours, opt-out of training, custom retention, SSO, SCIM, audit logs, and a dedicated customer success manager. It is aimed at organizations needing managed security and team provisions rather than a fixed individual quota.

Platforms

Descript runs on the web and as a desktop app for macOS and Windows. The desktop requirements are macOS 14 Sonoma or Windows 11 or newer.

Who it's for

Descript is best for creators and teams making podcasts, spoken-word videos, social clips, screen recordings, product demos, training, or internal communications. Transcript editing, cleanup, captions, and review tools are particularly useful when much of the work involves spoken content. It is less compelling for editors who primarily want a conventional timeline workflow or for high-volume users whose required media hours exceed a plan's allowance.

Pros and cons

Pro: Transcript edits change the underlying recording, making spoken-word edits and silence removal part of a text-led workflow.
Pro: Studio Sound, captions, translation, and AI speech cover several audio and video finishing needs in the same product.
Pro: Rooms supports up to 10 participants with separate tracks, while comments and shared projects support team review.
Con: Free is capped at 60 minutes per month and 720p export, with 100 AI credits only once.
Con: Hobbyist is limited to 10 media hours monthly and does not include 4K export; higher allowances require a more expensive tier.
Con: The desktop app requires recent operating systems, so older macOS and Windows versions are not supported.

Alternatives

For livestreaming and multichannel distribution, consider Restream: its free plan supports two channels at once and includes six hours recorded per stream, but applies Restream branding. For a free recording and streaming tool with no watermarks or usage limitations and commercial use allowed, OBS Studio is an alternative.

Podbean is another option. Riverside Magic Audio is another option. Vimeo is another option. Async is another option. Buzzsprout is another option. Iris.fm is another option.

Verdict

Choose Descript if transcript-based editing is a natural fit for your podcasts, interviews, or spoken-word videos and you want cleanup, captions, recording, and collaboration in one workflow. Its main trade-off is quota-bound production: check the monthly media hours and AI credits before committing, and look elsewhere if timeline-first editing or unrestricted usage matters more.
