Overview

DaVinci Resolve is a post-production application that combines video editing, color correction, effects, motion graphics, audio work and photo editing. It best suits creators who want those stages in one desktop workflow, including teams working across shared storage or cloud projects.

Its strongest case is breadth: the free edition covers up to Ultra HD and 60 fps, while Studio raises the ceiling to 32K and 120 fps and adds specialist tools. That makes the free version a substantial starting point, but high-resolution or high-frame-rate work points to the $295 Studio purchase.

Key features

One post-production workflow

Resolve brings editing, color correction, visual effects, motion graphics, audio post and photo editing together. DaVinci Resolve 21 adds a Photo page for still images. This breadth can reduce the need to move between separate applications, though it also makes Resolve a more extensive choice than a narrowly focused editor.

Its effects toolkit includes node-based compositing, keying, rotoscoping, 3D camera tracking and simulation, with GPU rendering. AI tools cover facial recognition, object detection, smart reframing and Speed Warp retiming. Third-party Open FX, audio plugins, titles and motion-graphics templates provide ways to extend the workflow.

Audio, storage and collaboration

Fairlight supports up to 2,000 audio tracks, with real-time effects, EQ and dynamics processing; surround mixing and live audio input are also supported. That capacity is useful for complex audio post, although it is far beyond what a simple video project needs.

Resolve works with direct-attached drives, NAS and SAN storage. Blackmagic Cloud can host projects and media for access from anywhere, while team collaboration supports shared work. Major file formats and transfers involving Final Cut Pro, Media Composer and Premiere Pro help projects move across established editing workflows.

Pricing

DaVinci Resolve is freemium, and its free version is available to download. It supports editing and finishing up to 60 fps at Ultra HD 3840 × 2160, a meaningful ceiling for many projects. The free edition is the sensible place to start if those limits fit; it gives up Studio's higher resolution and frame-rate range and its additional tools.

DaVinci Resolve Studio costs $295.00 USD once, billed as a one-time purchase. It supports up to 120 fps and 32K, and includes temporal and AI spatial noise reduction, more than 45 additional GPU- and CPU-accelerated Resolve FX, plus Python and LUA scripting and developer APIs. Studio suits users who need those expanded limits or capabilities; the free edition remains the better fit when they do not.

Platforms

Resolve is available for Linux, macOS and Windows, and is offered as a desktop application. A mobile app is also indicated, but the supported operating systems given are desktop platforms. Storage performance and video-workload throughput are relevant considerations for demanding projects.

Who it's for

Choose Resolve if you want editing, grading, effects and audio post in one application, need collaboration across shared projects, or expect to work with substantial audio or compositing tasks. The free version is a strong fit when Ultra HD and 60 fps are sufficient. Studio is the clearer choice for work that needs up to 32K, 120 fps, its extra noise-reduction and effects tools, or scripting.

It is less compelling if you only need a focused tool for a single stage of production, or if the free version's resolution and frame-rate caps fall short and Studio's one-time cost is not justified by your work.

Pros and cons

Pro: Editing, color, effects, motion graphics, audio and photo work sit in one application, which can keep a varied post-production workflow together.
Pro: The free edition supports up to Ultra HD and 60 fps, giving capable projects room to grow before a paid upgrade is necessary.
Pro: Studio lifts the limits to 32K and 120 fps and adds noise reduction, extra Resolve FX and scripting support for more demanding workflows.
Con: The free edition stops at 60 fps and Ultra HD, so higher-frame-rate or higher-resolution finishing requires Studio.
Con: Resolve's breadth may be unnecessary for someone who only needs a specialized audio, effects or editing tool.

Alternatives

For a narrower workflow, compare Resolve with Video Editing Software, Video Color Grading Software, Visual Effects Software or Audio Mixing Software. These category directories are useful when you want to focus on one stage rather than Resolve's combined post-production toolset. 360 Video Software and Disk Benchmark Software are other categories to consider for those respective needs.

Resolve is a video post-production choice rather than a dedicated DJ application. For DJ-focused software, alternatives include VirtualDJ, djay, MixPad, rekordbox, Mixxx, Serato DJ Pro, Elgato Wave Link and RØDE UNIFY.

Verdict

DaVinci Resolve is the right choice for creators who want a broad post-production workflow in one application, with a capable free edition and a defined path to Studio. Its main reason to look elsewhere is equally clear: if you need only one specialized task, or need more than the free limits but cannot justify Studio, a more focused option may suit you better.
