Overview

Designed for high ingest rates, fast queries, and long-term metrics storage, VictoriaMetrics also forms part of an observability stack spanning metrics, logs, and traces. Teams can run it on-premises, in hybrid environments, or in the cloud; the Cloud service is fully managed. This range makes it a strong option for organizations choosing between self-management and managed operations. It does not support SQL, so it is a poor fit when SQL is a requirement.

Prometheus-compatible scraping and PromQL-compatible workflows make it relevant to existing Prometheus environments, while MetricsQL offers another query language. Ingestion extends to InfluxDB line protocol, Graphite, OpenTSDB, RemoteWrite, DataDog, NewRelic, OpenTelemetry, Zabbix Connector, JSON line, CSV, and native binary. That breadth can accommodate mixed monitoring sources without requiring one collection protocol.

Key features

Scale and retention

VictoriaMetrics is built for fast ingestion and queries, supports horizontal scaling, and offers retention policies. Those capabilities suit teams keeping metrics over time or expanding a monitoring deployment. The database and monitoring focus is metrics-centered, even though the wider product scope includes logs and traces.

Managed operations and security

VictoriaMetrics Cloud includes managed operations, automated backups, software updates, and dedicated resources for each deployment. That reduces operational work compared with running the software yourself, but Cloud capacity tiers impose deployment limits and meter usage hourly. Security features include TLS/HTTPS, JWT, LDAP, SSO, identity-provider integration, and mTLS between cluster components. The company says its information security management certifications comply with ISO/IEC 27001:2013 requirements.

Pricing

The open-source single-node and cluster versions cost 0.00 USD per free. They provide a no-cost route to metrics monitoring, but teams choosing self-management should weigh that against the managed operations and support in paid options.

VictoriaMetrics Cloud — VictoriaMetrics starts at 200.00 USD per month and includes 500k active time series, 16.6k datapoints/sec, 170 GB daily read volume, and business-hours support. It fits teams seeking managed metrics with those capacity limits; deployments beyond them need a tier sized to their usage.

VictoriaMetrics Cloud — VictoriaLogs also starts at 200.00 USD per month. Its tier includes 800 logs/sec, 0.8 MB/s ingestion, 50 new streams/24 hours, a 4.6 GB/sec read rate, and business-hours support. That is the Cloud choice for teams focused on logs rather than the metrics limits of the VictoriaMetrics tier. VictoriaMetrics Cloud offers a free 30-day trial, useful for evaluating the managed service before committing.

VictoriaMetrics Enterprise has custom pricing, with Launchpad, Silver, Gold, and Platinum tiers whose features and support vary. It is aimed at small teams through platform teams, production workloads at scale, and organizations standardizing observability; enterprise support includes technical expertise and guidance. Community users instead have open-source community support options.

Platforms

VictoriaMetrics supports API, Linux, macOS, Windows, web, and self-hosted deployments. The mix accommodates teams managing infrastructure directly as well as those using the managed service.

Who it's for

Choose VictoriaMetrics if you need a scalable metrics database, Prometheus-compatible workflows, multiple ingestion options, and the freedom to choose self-hosted, hybrid, or managed deployment. It is less suitable if SQL support is essential or if Cloud capacity limits and starting prices do not fit your deployment.

Pros and cons

Pros

Free open-source single-node and cluster versions let teams run metrics monitoring without a subscription.
Prometheus-compatible scraping and PromQL, plus MetricsQL, suit established metrics workflows.
Broad protocol and format support helps bring data from varied monitoring systems into one database.
Managed Cloud includes backups, updates, dedicated resources, and business-hours support at the stated starting tiers.

Cons

No SQL support rules it out for workloads that depend on SQL queries.
Cloud starts at 200.00 USD per month for either listed tier, and each tier has explicit capacity limits.
Enterprise tier features and support vary, with custom pricing rather than a fixed entry price.

Alternatives

Prometheus is the straightforward alternative for teams seeking a free, open-source monitoring and alerting toolkit rather than VictoriaMetrics’ managed Cloud and enterprise options.

Netdata may suit teams that want monitoring across mobile as well as desktop and server platforms; its Community plan is free but capped at 5 active connected nodes and 1 active custom dashboard per room.

Grafana Cloud Application Observability is another option for teams comparing a hosted observability service, with a free plan covering 2,232 host hours.

Checkmk is worth considering for teams prioritizing a broad set of pre-built integrations and host monitoring: its free Community plan includes 2000+ integrations and supports up to about 100 hosts.

Mackerel, Nagios XI, Akamai Cloud Longview, and Pixie are other monitoring options to compare.

Verdict

VictoriaMetrics is a strong choice for teams that need high-throughput metrics storage, flexible ingestion, and a choice between free self-hosting and managed or enterprise support. Its clearest advantage is accommodating Prometheus-oriented and mixed-source environments without forcing a single deployment model. Look elsewhere if SQL is central to your workflow or the Cloud tiers’ starting price and capacity ceilings do not suit your scale.
