Overview

Dagger is a code-first continuous integration system for teams that want pipeline logic to run locally as well as in the cloud. It is a strong fit for developers who value portable workflows and reusable checks, but its event quotas and run-history windows need to match the team's workload.

Key features

Portable pipelines: Dagger uses a DAG execution engine, and pipeline logic can run locally or in Dagger Cloud. Automatic caching and end-to-end tracing help make runs repeatable and easier to inspect; local cache support and multi-architecture builds add flexibility for build workflows.
Cloud Checks: Checks can run automatically after Git events such as pushes and pull requests, without a CI workflow file. GitHub repositories connect to Dagger Cloud and run checks on Cloud Engines, making this particularly useful for teams seeking GitHub-triggered automation without maintaining that workflow configuration.
Reusable modules: Official modules cover testing, linting, formatting, type checking, browser tests, and Helm chart validation. Modules can be extended in a preferred language, so teams can reuse common tasks while adapting them to their own codebase.
Build secrets: Dagger supports build-secret handling, a relevant capability for builds that need credentials without treating them as ordinary build inputs.

Pricing

Dagger uses a freemium model. The Individual plan is free at $0.00 USD per free, billed Free, and includes one user, 1,000,000 monthly events, one month of run history, and community support. It also includes workflow and function logs, function call traces, workflow cache visibility, pre-push visibility, and GitHub Checks integration. This is a substantial free allocation for an individual, though the single-user cap and short history make it less suitable for a team needing shared access or longer audit windows.

The Team plan costs $50.00 USD per month, billed at $50 per month after a two-week trial. It supports up to 10 users, 10,000,000 monthly events, one year of run history, and email support, along with workflow visibility, GitHub Checks integration, module insights, and a module catalog. The higher event quota and longer history suit collaborative projects that need more visibility and retention; the 10-user ceiling is a constraint for larger organizations.

Enterprise has custom pricing, with users and monthly events arranged by contacting Dagger. It includes 24/7 premium support, while SSO and managed single-tenant deployment are Enterprise contact items. Teams with those requirements should discuss scope directly rather than assume they are part of the standard Team tier.

Platforms

Dagger supports Linux, macOS, Windows, web, and self-hosted use. CLI installation instructions cover macOS, Linux, and Windows, and a self-hosting guide supports teams that want to manage deployment themselves. That breadth is useful for mixed developer environments, while cloud checks specifically run on Dagger Cloud Engines.

Who it's for

Dagger is best for developers and teams that want CI pipeline logic expressed as code, portable between local execution and cloud runs, with GitHub-triggered checks and a broad set of task modules. Individual is a reasonable starting point for a one-user workload within its event and history limits; Team is the more practical choice when several collaborators need a larger quota and year-long run history. Organizations requiring SSO, a managed single-tenant deployment, or 24/7 premium support should consider Enterprise. Dagger is a poorer fit when a team exceeds 10 users on Team or needs longer history than its plan provides.

Pros and cons

Pro: Pipeline logic can run locally or in the cloud, with caching and tracing supporting repeatability and diagnosis.
Pro: Cloud Checks trigger from Git events without requiring a CI workflow file, and GitHub Checks integration appears on both Individual and Team.
Pro: Official modules cover varied development and validation tasks and are extensible in a preferred language.
Con: The free Individual plan is limited to one user and one month of run history, which can hamper shared work and retrospective investigation.
Con: Team costs $50.00 USD per month after the two-week trial and caps membership at 10 users, so growing teams may need Enterprise custom pricing.

Alternatives

For readers comparing build and CI options, see Container Build Tools, Continuous Integration Software, and Game Build Automation Software.

BuildKit is a free, perpetual Apache License 2.0 option for readers who want a no-charge build tool rather than Dagger's freemium CI offering.
Garden may suit teams comparing another freemium option; its free tier has limits on build minutes, cache hits, and cache retention.
Tilt is a free, open-source Apache-2.0 option for Linux, macOS, and Windows.
Cloud Native Buildpacks Pack offers a free CLI and Go library, with no paid plans.
AWS CodeBuild may fit readers who prefer usage-based billing for compute resources according to build duration and selected compute type.
Jib is a free alternative focused on open-source container building tools for Java.
Buildah is a free open-source command-line tool for readers seeking a no-paid-tier option.
Earthly is another option for readers comparing build tools.

Verdict

Choose Dagger if you want code-defined CI that carries across local and cloud runs, with GitHub-triggered checks and reusable modules. Its one-user free plan is a useful entry point, and Team adds a much larger event allowance and a year of run history for $50 per month after a two-week trial. Look elsewhere if Team's 10-user cap or one-year history window falls short, or if you need Enterprise capabilities without custom pricing.
