Overview

Pendraic combines prose, outline, and arcs views with optional panels for character lookups, voice consistency, beats, and unresolved threads. Keeping these checks alongside a draft can help authors track continuity during revision; writers who want a lightweight place to write may find the planning apparatus unnecessary.

Its planning and revision framework has eight areas: Promise, Engine, Nexus, Dynamics, Registry, Anchors, Iterations, and Closure. That gives novelists a structured way to approach story work, though it may not suit those who prefer an entirely self-designed process.

Key features

The World Builder connects maps, family trees, calendars, languages, timelines, and encyclopedia entries with prose. This is a meaningful advantage for fiction with interdependent settings or large casts, where reference material needs to stay close to the manuscript.

AI options include Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok, and OpenRouter, using either a user’s own account or a Pendraic Managed AI wallet. When a user initiates a generation pass, its prompt and necessary context go to the chosen provider under that provider’s terms. Pendraic says it does not train models on users’ writing or sell their content, and that saved files are encrypted in transit and at rest. Authors should still consider the selected provider’s terms before sending draft material.

Book outlining, chapter workspaces, continuity tools, and rewrite controls support work beyond initial drafting. Free exports include Word, Markdown, and plain text; the product’s export formats also include DOCX and EPUB.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free, billed forever. It allows up to three active books and includes the full editor and worldbuilder, plus one AI cover and one world map per day. That is a useful way to try the core workspace, but authors with more than three current books or heavier daily cover and map needs will hit its caps.

Essentials costs 14.99 USD per month, billed per month. It raises the limit to ten active books, adds AI writing help through the user’s own Claude or ChatGPT account, and allows up to 20 AI covers and 20 world maps daily. It fits authors who need more room and bring a supported AI account; it does not remove the active-book ceiling.

Premium costs 24.99 USD per month, billed per month, and includes unlimited active books, MCP connectivity from Claude or ChatGPT, up to 100 AI covers and 100 world maps per day, and priority support. Choose it for the expanded limits and connectivity; co-writing with another person is planned for when it ships, not an included current capability.

Pendraic Desktop is 99.00 USD per once, billed once, for Mac and Windows offline use on one license covering three computers. It includes a free 7-day trial with no card needed. The separate Desktop entry gives 99.00 USD per month, billed No subscription, for up to three devices; check the terms carefully before treating it as equivalent to the one-time desktop license. Paid plans start at 14.99 USD per month.

Account access uses email magic links rather than passwords handled by Pendraic. Deleted content is removed from the live database immediately and rotates out of backups within 30 days.

Platforms

Pendraic is available on macOS, Windows, and the web. Its desktop license adds offline use for Mac and Windows, a practical distinction for authors who need to work without an internet connection.

Who it's for

Pendraic is best for novelists who need a connected home for drafts, story structure, and substantial world references, and who are comfortable choosing how AI providers handle generation prompts. It is less suitable for writers who need many active projects on the free tier or want an unstructured, minimal writing tool.

Pros and cons

Pro: Prose, outlines, arcs, and continuity panels share one workspace, reducing the need to separate drafting from story checks.
Pro: The linked World Builder covers a broad set of reference material, useful for settings and casts that demand ongoing tracking.
Pro: The free tier includes the full editor and worldbuilder, with Word, Markdown, and plain-text export.
Con: Free limits authors to three active books and one AI cover and map per day; Essentials still caps active books at ten.
Con: AI generation sends prompts and needed context to the selected provider, so privacy-minded authors must weigh that provider’s terms.
Con: The eight-part planning framework may be more structure than writers who prefer a self-directed workflow want.

Alternatives

Jenova Creative Fiction Writer is worth considering for Android or iOS access; its free plan has limited usage, while paid plans offer 30× free usage for 20.00 USD per month or custom model selection and no watermarks for 50.00 USD.

BookBud.ai is a web alternative whose free plan provides 25,000 signup credits to begin a book, make a cover, and draft early chapters; its Starter plan is 19.00 USD per month, billed monthly.

AIWriteBook Audiobook Studio offers a free 100-credit allowance, described as about 12 pages for an outline and first chapter; its Plus plan is 12.00 USD per month, billed yearly.

Bookwiz has a free plan with up to three books, limited AI prompts and autocomplete, and KDP-ready EPUB, print PDF, DOCX, and cover outputs; consider it if those publishing-oriented exports matter more than Pendraic’s worldbuilding workspace.

Calliope is another option, with a free editor and unlimited books.

Manuscripts.ai offers a free plan for one active project, with story templates, a lore book, scene beats, reports, and AI writing and editing tools.

FireQuill keeps its free plan to two projects with no AI; its Companion plan costs 10.00 USD per month and includes three active projects and 750 chat conversations per month.

Keter Labs is an alternative for readers considering an API and web offering, with a free plan and a Pro plan at 29.00 USD per month.

Verdict

Choose Pendraic if you want one fiction-focused workspace for drafting, continuity, structured story planning, and linked world references. The free tier makes it possible to work with its core tools, while Essentials and Premium raise book and AI limits. Look elsewhere if you need more than three active books without paying, want a simpler writing surface, or are unwilling to send generation context to an external AI provider.
