Overview

Converseen is a free, open-source batch image processor for converting and making common changes to groups of files. It suits people who want one cross-platform tool for routine image jobs rather than a specialized photo workflow. Its broad format support and practical batch tools make it a useful no-cost option, though PDF work on Windows and Linux requires Ghostscript and the macOS release is beta and unsigned.

Key features

Converseen handles more than 100 formats through ImageMagick, including JPEG, PNG, TIFF, GIF, SVG, WebP, HEIC/HEIF, DPX and EXR; AVIF is also among its supported output formats. That breadth is useful when a batch contains a mix of everyday and less common image types. It can process RAW files, but its stated operations are conversion, resizing, rotation, flipping and compression—not a dedicated RAW development workflow.

Batch operations cover the basics: resize, convert, rotate, flip and compress multiple images, then rename a set with progressive numbers or prefix and suffix values. For one-off sets or repeatable manual jobs, that combination avoids handling files individually. The automation level is manual, so it is not the right fit if the workflow depends on unattended batch processing.

For PDFs, Converseen can turn a whole document or selected pages into images at chosen dimensions and formats. Windows and Linux users must configure Ghostscript first, adding a setup step that matters if PDF conversion is central to the job. The program can also extract an image from a Windows icon file.

Pricing

Converseen is free: its Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and is released under the GNU GPL version 3. There is no cheaper tier with reduced features to weigh against a paid plan; the trade-off is that the work is manual and PDF processing on Windows and Linux depends on Ghostscript.

The project uses open-source frameworks and libraries including Qt and ImageMagick. The Windows download contains no ads, adware or third-party apps. The program does not transfer information to other networked systems. Users can request information or features through a contact form and report bugs through GitHub.

Platforms

Converseen supports Windows, Linux, macOS and FreeBSD, as well as other operating systems. Linux users can install it from source, as an AppImage, Snap or Flatpak, or through distribution repositories. The macOS release is beta and not currently codesigned, so it is a less reassuring choice for users who need a stable, signed build. Windows and Linux PDF conversion requires Ghostscript.

Who it's for

Converseen is a good fit for people who need free, manual batch conversion or resizing across varied image formats, with renaming and a handful of other common edits in the same tool. Its GPL-licensed source and several Linux installation routes will also appeal to users who prefer open-source software. Look elsewhere if you need automated batch runs, a dedicated RAW development workflow, or a stable signed macOS release.

Pros and cons

Pros: More than 100 supported image formats and broad output support make mixed-format batches practical.
Pros: Conversion, resizing, rotation, flipping, compression and renaming cover a useful set of routine bulk tasks at no cost.
Pros: PDF pages can be rendered as images, with control over selected pages, dimensions and formats.
Cons: Windows and Linux PDF processing requires Ghostscript to be configured.
Cons: Batch automation is manual, limiting its fit for unattended workflows.
Cons: The macOS release is beta and unsigned, a drawback for users seeking a stable, codesigned app.

Alternatives

XnConvert is another cross-platform option with a free plan for private, educational and non-profit use; its company license for 100 or more licenses costs 6.50 EUR. Consider it if those use terms or its freemium model better match your needs.

darktable is a free, GPL-licensed photography workflow application and RAW developer. Choose it instead when RAW development and a photography workflow matter more than Converseen's batch conversion focus.

Evoto AI has a free plan and trial, with paid plans including Starter at 89.00 USD per year, billed annually, for 800 credits and 2 devices. It is an alternative to consider if those plan terms suit your needs.

ImageMagick is free image-processing software that permits commercial use and supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted and Windows deployments. Choose it if those deployment options or commercial-use terms are a better fit.

RawTherapee is a free GPLv3 RAW developer for Linux, macOS and Windows. Its stated exclusions include digital asset management, printing and uploading features.

Canon Digital Photo Professional is free for macOS and Windows and is included in the initial software setup for Canon EOS digital cameras and RAW-capable PowerShot models. It is a Canon-camera-specific alternative.

ImBatch offers free personal use on Windows, while commercial use requires a license; its Personal License costs 39.95 USD one time. Consider it if you want a Windows-only alternative with that personal-use licensing structure.

IrfanView is a Windows alternative with a freeware option for private, non-commercial use and an 18.00 USD commercial license.

Verdict

Choose Converseen if you want a free, open-source tool for manually converting, resizing and renaming batches across a wide range of formats. Its strongest case is the combination of broad format handling and useful everyday operations without a license cost. Look elsewhere if you need automated runs, a dedicated RAW workflow, or a stable signed macOS release; PDF users on Windows and Linux should also account for the Ghostscript setup.
