Overview

As a graduated CNCF project, containerd provides core container lifecycle operations through a daemon designed to be embedded in other systems. It handles image transfer and storage, execution, and supervision rather than presenting itself as an end-user application. That clear scope makes it a strong foundation for orchestration and higher-level platforms, but means a standalone deployment requires additional components.

Key features

OCI images and registries: OCI Image Specification support and push and pull operations work with any registry that complies with the OCI Distribution Specification. This gives system builders a standards-based image path.
Runtime choices: containerd supports the OCI Runtime Specification, uses runc by default, and allows other OCI-compliant runtimes to be added. Users typically also need to install runc and CNI plugins.
Kubernetes integration: A built-in CRI plugin lets containerd act as the runtime for a Kubernetes cluster, making it a practical choice for Kubernetes infrastructure.
Rootless mode and Windows containers: Both are supported, alongside Linux and Windows host operation.
Security process: The project describes a disclosure process using GitHub security features and its CVE numbering authority. It lists a CNCF-funded Ada Logics fuzzing audit from March 2023 and a CNCF-funded Cure53 security audit from November 2018.
CLI caveat: The included ctr tool is for development and debugging, not a stable, human-friendly interface. Its interface may change over time, so it is a poor foundation for scripts that depend on long-term CLI stability.

Pricing

containerd is free and open source under the Apache 2.0 license. The containerd plan costs 0.00 USD per free, with no free trial. There are no paid tiers or plan-based capabilities to weigh; the practical cost is assembling the surrounding runtime and higher-level tooling the project does not provide.

Platforms

containerd runs as a daemon on Linux and Windows and is also self-hosted. Nightly builds are available for both operating systems, but may contain critical bugs, are not recommended for production, and receive no support. For production use, those nightly builds are not a substitute for a supported release.

Who it's for

Choose containerd when building or operating a larger system that needs a standards-based container runtime, especially a Kubernetes cluster. It is less suitable for developers or end users seeking a ready-to-use container manager: network-interface creation and management are left to higher-level systems, and image building is not a first-class API feature. Higher-level tooling can supply image building, while networking also needs another system.

Pros and cons

Pro: OCI image, distribution, and runtime support provides compatibility across compliant registries and runtime implementations.
Pro: Built-in Kubernetes CRI support makes containerd a direct fit for Kubernetes runtime needs.
Pro: Linux and Windows support, rootless mode, and Windows containers give system builders options across host environments.
Con: Networking and image building sit outside containerd's core scope, so a working platform needs additional tooling.
Con: The ctr CLI has no interface stability guarantee and is intended for debugging and development, not a dependable user-facing workflow.
Con: Nightly builds are unsupported and unsuitable for production because they may contain critical bugs.

Alternatives

Choose Podman if container, pod, and image management through Podman Desktop better matches the workflow; it is free and supports Linux, macOS, Windows, API, and self-hosted environments. Incus is another free option across Linux, macOS, Windows, API, and self-hosted environments. LXD offers open-source KVM-based virtual machines and system containers for self-hosted deployment, with a free open-source plan and a free trial.

Apptainer is a free open-source container platform across Linux, macOS, Windows, API, and self-hosted environments, with commercial support available through partners. BuildKit is free under Apache License 2.0. Moby is another free option available across Linux, macOS, Windows, API, and self-hosted environments. Buildah is a free command-line tool for Linux and self-hosted use, with no paid tiers or usage limits stated. gVisor is a free Linux-compatible sandbox that requires Linux 5.6 or later and x86_64 or ARM64.

Verdict

containerd is the right choice for teams embedding a proven, standards-oriented runtime into a larger system, particularly when Kubernetes CRI support is central. Its free Apache 2.0 license and OCI compatibility are compelling; choose a broader tool instead if you need container workflows, networking, or image building without assembling other components.
