Overview

Provisioning, backups, scaling and rolling upgrades are handled by the service, which can reduce routine database work as an application grows. ACID transactions and automatic scaling of reads and writes address workloads that need consistency at scale without manual sharding. On-demand compute and storage add flexibility, though plan-specific infrastructure and pricing determine how that flexibility translates into a production deployment.

Clusters can span regions and run on AWS, Azure and GCP, including combinations of public clouds. That is useful for placing data near users or building a multi-region design, but multi-region deployment alone does not make every plan equally resilient: Standard has a 99.99% availability SLA, while Mission Critical reaches 99.999% with multi-region. Terraform and Cloud APIs support operational automation; managed data pipelines, native drivers, and connections to observability and logging tools fit teams already working with a broader cloud stack.

TLS protects node-to-node and client-server traffic, cloud-provider disk encryption protects data at rest, and column-level encryption is supported. CockroachDB Cloud Advanced is described as HIPAA-ready and certified against PCI-DSS SAQ-A and SAQ-D requirements. Cockroach Labs reports ISO 27001, 27017 and 27018 certifications and annual SOC 2 Type II and SOC 3 certification.

Key features

Managed operations: Push-button provisioning, automatic scaling, no-downtime rolling upgrades and managed backups reduce infrastructure tasks for teams that want to focus on application development.
Distributed transactions: ACID support and horizontal scaling of reads and writes suit transactional systems that may grow across regions without manual sharding.
Cloud and regional choice: AWS, Azure and GCP deployment, including combinations, can help keep data near users; Azure is included in Mission Critical plan details.
Availability options: Standard's 99.99% SLA may fit workloads that can accept a lower target, while the 99.999% multi-region SLA on Mission Critical is aimed at systems where downtime is more costly.
Operations and integrations: Terraform provider and Cloud APIs enable automation, with data pipelines, native drivers and third-party observability and logging connections supporting integration into existing workflows.

Pricing

Cloud usage is billed monthly and metered by the minute. The stated Standard and Mission Critical rates are for AWS us-east-1 and vary by region, so regional deployment can change the bill. Cockroach Continuum pricing applies to new Cloud organizations or deployments from September 15, 2026; existing customers remain on their current plans unless they opt in through their account team.

Basic: $0.00 USD per month. It includes 50 million RUs and 10 GiB of storage free per month, up to 30K RU/sec (about 60 vCPUs), and on-demand compute and storage that scales to zero. This is suited to evaluation and smaller workloads within those caps; pricing applies to clusters created before September 15, 2026.
Standard: $0.06 USD per month. Shared infrastructure, single- or multi-region AWS and GCP deployment, usage-based storage and a 99.99% availability SLA make it the lower-cost paid option for workloads that do not require dedicated infrastructure. Cloud usage is metered by the minute.
Mission Critical: $0.16 USD per month. Dedicated infrastructure, single- or multi-region deployment on AWS, GCP and Azure, provisioned storage and egress controls target production systems needing more control and stronger availability. Its 99.999% SLA applies with multi-region deployment.
Cockroach Continuum Standard: $0.09 USD per month, billed at $0.092 per vCPU-hour; the stated example is approximately $203/month for 2 vCPU and 100 GB. Shared infrastructure, usage-based storage, AWS and GCP, a 99.99% SLA and a 1-hour P1 support response suit teams seeking a defined baseline without dedicated capacity.
Cockroach Continuum Mission Critical: $0.16 USD per month, billed at $0.162 per vCPU-hour; the example is approximately $1,528/month for 12 vCPU and 100 GB. Dedicated infrastructure, AWS, GCP and Azure, egress controls, CMEK, PCI DSS and HIPAA compliance, a 99.999% multi-region SLA and a 30-minute P1 response are aimed at higher-stakes deployments. The example cost is substantially higher than Continuum Standard.
Advanced: $0.60 USD per month; four vCPUs start at $0.60/hr. Unlimited scaling and availability up to 99.999% are suited to clusters needing that capacity and availability profile; pricing applies to clusters created before September 15, 2026.

New Cloud organizations receive a 30-day trial with $400 in credits. The trial ends after 30 days or when credits run out, whichever comes first, and clusters are paused afterward. Basic's monthly free quotas make it the clearest ongoing low-cost option, but a workload that exceeds its RUs, storage or throughput caps needs a paid plan. Standard's shared infrastructure and lower SLA trade off against Mission Critical's dedicated resources and multi-region availability.

Platforms

CockroachDB Cloud supports API, Linux and web platforms, giving development and operations teams several ways to work with the service.

Who it's for

It is a strong fit for teams building transactional services that need to scale across regions or clouds, especially when they want managed operations and automation rather than manual sharding. Its plan range can serve development and testing as well as enterprise-critical applications, but the higher availability and dedicated infrastructure options make the most sense when the workload justifies their added cost. A single-region or tightly capped workload may not need that footprint.

Pros and cons

Pro: Automatic scaling of reads and writes avoids manual sharding, reducing a significant operational task as workloads grow.
Pro: Multi-cloud and multi-region deployment offers flexibility for teams needing regional placement or cross-cloud architecture.
Pro: Managed upgrades, backups and provisioning reduce routine database operations.
Con: Availability and infrastructure differ by plan; teams needing the 99.999% multi-region SLA must choose Mission Critical or an applicable higher tier.
Con: The free Basic plan has explicit monthly RU and storage limits, and its pricing applies only to clusters created before September 15, 2026.
Con: Regional rates vary, and the Continuum Mission Critical example is much more expensive than its Standard counterpart.

Alternatives

Distributed SQL Databases and Database Software are useful starting points for comparing category options; Spatial Databases is a narrower category for spatial workloads.

TiDB Cloud is worth considering for teams looking for a freemium distributed database with a free Starter tier and quotas including 25 GiB row storage and 25 GiB column storage.
OceanBase Database offers a free, open-source Community Edition with full kernel capabilities, making it an option for teams that want that edition rather than a managed-service plan.
YugabyteDB Anywhere may suit teams evaluating a paid product that offers a free evaluation license for up to 32 consecutive calendar days.
CrateDB has a free Shared Free plan with 2 vCPUs, 2 GiB RAM and 8 GiB storage, a concrete option for workloads that fit those limits.
SingleStore Helios offers a free shared workspace for evaluation, development and non-production testing, with self-support.
Google Cloud Spanner is another paid database option with regional Standard and Enterprise configurations and pay-as-you-use compute pricing on Standard.
YDB offers an Apache 2.0 open-source edition that can be self-hosted, plus a managed serverless option.
MySQL is a freemium alternative with a GPL-licensed Community Edition for SQL and NoSQL applications.

Verdict

CockroachDB Cloud is best for teams that need managed relational transactions across regions or clouds and want scaling, upgrades and backups handled for them. Its range of availability and infrastructure options is the main reason to choose it; variable regional rates, plan-specific limits and the price of dedicated high-availability capacity are reasons to look elsewhere if the workload is modest or cost-sensitive.
