Overview

VMware Workstation Pro is a desktop hypervisor for running virtual machines on Windows and Linux PCs. It is a strong fit for people who need local environments for development, testing, or learning; its breadth of VM controls comes with a trade-off: free users depend on community and self-service support.

By assigning virtual CPU, memory, and storage to each machine, it lets one physical computer host multiple operating systems. It also supports local containers and Kubernetes clusters, making it useful beyond traditional desktop virtualization.

Key features

Snapshots let users save a VM state and restore it as a rollback point, a practical safeguard when testing changes. Nested virtualization and GPU acceleration broaden the kinds of workloads it can accommodate. Advanced networking and custom VM configurations offer flexibility, though they also make Workstation better suited to users who want control than to those seeking a managed service.

Encryption, virtual TPM, and UEFI Secure Boot provide security options for virtual machines. Workstation can also connect to remote vSphere or ESX servers to manage VMs and physical hosts, and move local VMs to a private cloud. That integration is useful in VMware environments; it is less compelling for users who only need an isolated local VM.

Workstation Pro 26H1 for Windows is a 64-bit application and adds remote connectivity to ARM-based ESXi servers. The release is available through the Broadcom Support Portal. Broadcom says it will continue product updates and security patches.

Pricing

The VMware Workstation Pro plan costs 0.00 USD per free, with no subscription or license key required. It covers personal, educational, and commercial use on 64-bit Intel or AMD (x86/x86-64) PCs running Windows or Linux as the host. There is no free trial because the product itself is free. The plan is unusually open on usage, but it does not include Broadcom Global Support Team assistance; users must turn to community forums and self-service resources.

Platforms

Windows and Linux are the supported host platforms, and the supported guest architecture is x86_64. Workstation has a desktop management interface and a hybrid deployment model. The Windows 26H1 release is 64-bit and supports remote connectivity to ARM-based ESXi servers.

Who it's for

Developers, IT professionals, students, and enthusiasts who need configurable local VMs, snapshots, or a place to work with containers and Kubernetes are the clearest audience. It is also a sensible choice for people already managing VMware infrastructure who want to connect local work with vSphere or ESX. Those who require vendor-backed support should weigh that gap before adopting the free plan.

Pros and cons

Pro: No-charge licensing covers personal, educational, and commercial use, with no subscription or key to manage.
Pro: Snapshots, nested virtualization, GPU acceleration, and custom networking support varied VM workflows.
Pro: vSphere and ESX connectivity can bridge local VM work with remote VMware infrastructure.
Con: Free users do not receive Broadcom Global Support Team support and must rely on self-service channels.
Con: The stated host and guest architecture scope centers on Windows/Linux hosts and x86_64 guests, so it is not a universal host-and-guest solution.

Alternatives

For broader options, browse Virtual machine software. If the priority is load balancing rather than local virtualization, HAProxy Community Edition is a free Linux/self-hosted choice for TCP and HTTP proxying. AWS Elastic Load Balancing is a paid cloud option with a free tier for eligible new AWS customers, while F5 BIG-IP APM is a paid alternative with a free trial and support across a wider set of platforms.

Readers comparing network-focused categories can also explore Software-Defined Networking Software, Container Networking Software, Load Balancing Software, Microsegmentation Software, and Virtualization Management Software. Other alternatives include Loadbalancer.org Enterprise, Progress Kemp LoadMaster, Radware Alteon, IIS Application Request Routing (ARR), and Linux Virtual Server.

Verdict

Choose VMware Workstation Pro if you want a capable local VM workspace with snapshots, configurable networking, and a path into VMware infrastructure without paying for a license. Its commercial-use free license is a major advantage. Look elsewhere if vendor support is essential or your work depends on a host or guest architecture outside its Windows/Linux and x86_64 scope.
