Overview

VICE covers eight systems: the C64, C64DTV, C128, VIC20, PET, PLUS4, SCPU64 and CBM-II. That range is a meaningful advantage for users with software from different parts of the Commodore family, while the maturity gap makes the C64 and VIC20 the safer starting points.

The project aims for cycle-accurate behavior, with 6502/6510 emulation, documented and undocumented opcodes, and careful chip timing. VICE is free software under GNU GPL version 2 or later, with no warranty, including implied warranties of merchantability or fitness for a particular purpose.

Key features

Commodore hardware emulation: Eight systems are covered, but the manual warns that the C64DTV, C128, PET, PLUS4, SCPU64 and CBM-II emulators remain under construction and may be less capable than the C64 or VIC20 versions. Users relying on those six should expect a less mature experience.
C64 video and sound: C64 emulation includes VIC-II video and SID sound, with synchronization, ring modulation and filters. That attention to hardware behavior is relevant for software that depends on those systems.
Disk drives and media: The emulators support up to four external drives and can work with disk images, filesystem directories or compatible real devices. This gives users several ways to connect software and media to an emulated setup.
Joystick input: Input can come from the keyboard or a joystick attached to the host machine, accommodating either a keyboard-first setup or external controls.
Developer interface: A stable binary monitor interface is used by third-party tools such as C64 Studio and debugger projects, making VICE relevant to users who want debugging tools alongside emulation.

Pricing

VICE costs 0.00 USD per free. The free plan is the software itself, distributed under GPL version 2 or later; there is no free trial because there is no paid plan to trial. The trade-off is not a feature cap but the project’s no-warranty terms and limited developer availability: the team works on VICE in spare time and asks users to consult the manual before seeking support.

Platforms

VICE supports Android, Linux, macOS and Windows. The download page offers Windows 64-bit GTK3 and SDL2 builds, and macOS builds for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs that require macOS 12.0 or later. Linux users are directed to Unix downloads, while Android binaries are linked from a separate page.

Who it's for

VICE is a strong fit for people who want to run programs written for classic Commodore 8-bit computers, particularly those focused on the C64 or VIC20 and those who value processor and timing emulation. Its drive support, joystick input and developer interface also suit users configuring a more involved emulation or debugging setup. It is a less certain choice when a specific title depends on one of the six emulators the manual describes as under construction.

Pros and cons

Pro: Eight Commodore systems give users broad family coverage in one package.
Pro: Cycle-accuracy goals, processor opcode coverage and detailed C64 video and sound emulation address hardware-sensitive software.
Pro: Support for four external drives, multiple media sources and keyboard or host-joystick input offers practical setup flexibility.
Con: Six of the eight emulators are under construction and may lag behind the C64 and VIC20 versions.
Con: The software comes without warranty, and support requests go to SourceForge trackers or email while the developers work in their spare time.
Con: The listed BIOS requirement is an additional consideration when preparing a system.

Alternatives

Breadbin466 is another free option for Linux, macOS and Windows; its MIT license does not cover Commodore ROM images.

Buddi is a free Linux, macOS and Windows budgeting application, rather than an alternative Commodore emulator.

Viciious is a free alternative for Linux and web users.

Z64K is a free option for Linux, macOS and Windows users considering another emulator.

C64 Forever is a Windows-only freemium alternative, with a free Express Edition.

CCS64 is freemium and supports Linux and Windows; its shareware registration costs 30.00 USD per once for regular use, with special features potentially available to registered users.

Power64 is a macOS alternative with a free trial and a 32.00 USD per once single-user license. Unregistered sessions are limited to 10 minutes.

Frodo is another free option for Windows, macOS and Linux.

Verdict

Choose VICE if you want free Commodore 8-bit emulation across a wide range of systems, especially the C64 or VIC20, and value its hardware-focused approach and peripheral support. Look elsewhere if your target machine is among the six still under construction or you need warranty-backed support.
