Overview

Cass handles transportation invoices from intake through validation, accrual, dispute resolution, and payment. It supports both EDI and digitized paper invoices, then checks charges against contracts and flags duplicate payments. That makes it a fit for complex freight programs where manual review and fragmented payment processes would be difficult to manage.

The service is built around substantial scale: Cass reports processing 35 million freight invoices and $37 billion in freight spend annually, across more than 15,000 carriers. Typical clients have annual freight costs from tens of millions to over a billion dollars. Those figures underscore the intended market; a shipper with modest, straightforward freight needs may be paying for more capability than it requires.

Key features

Audit and invoice workflow

Contract-compliance checks and duplicate detection cover common sources of overpayment, while the system also supports complicated movements including pool shipments, stop-offs, milk runs, intermodal shipments, Rule 11, white-glove service, and spot quotes. Dispute resolution and expense allocation extend the workflow beyond simply approving or rejecting an invoice. This breadth matters most when a shipper's rules and freight mix make standard invoice matching inadequate.

Reporting and integrations

CassPort aggregates and normalizes bills of lading, shipment documents, carrier invoices, and third-party data. Reports can include shipment and payment details, SKU- or accessorial-level accruals, and general-ledger reporting. Customized accrual files and integration with ERP or accounting software help connect freight activity to finance workflows rather than leaving it in a separate reporting silo.

Transdata services can deliver freight-spend data to ERP, TMS, accounting, MRP, CRM, procurement, order-management, business-intelligence, carrier, and 3PL systems. That range is a practical advantage for organizations with established systems, though the value depends on the connections their own workflow requires.

Payments and controls

Carrier payments support ACH, checks, virtual cards, and wire transfers, including domestic and international payments. Cass says its global electronic payment network can pay logistics service providers in 114 currencies. Cass Commercial Bank provides funds-transfer tracking and an audit trail; the company also says it is regulated by the U.S. Federal Reserve and undergoes annual SOC 1 Type II reviews. These controls are relevant to shippers managing sizable payment flows and formal finance requirements.

A named account team provides specialized service and ongoing process-improvement support. That can suit complex operations that need continuing coordination, but it is a service-led proposition rather than a self-serve tool for a small team.

Pricing

Cass Freight Audit and Payment is a paid service with custom pricing; contact sales for a quote. The plan is positioned for large freight spend and complex business rules. It includes multiple invoice-capture methods, rate validation, duplicate detection, carrier payments, EDI support, and integrations across finance, logistics, procurement, and related systems. There is no published lower-cost tier to compare against, so organizations should assess the scope of their invoice volume, freight mix, and integration needs during pricing discussions.

Platforms

Cass Freight Audit and Payment is available on the web. EDI support and a broad set of business-system integrations extend its role beyond a standalone browser workflow.

Who it's for

This is the strongest fit for shippers with substantial annual freight costs, intricate carrier contracts, varied shipment types, and finance teams that need detailed accruals and dependable payment controls. It is less suitable for small shippers with simple invoice flows or buyers looking for a transparent, self-service price.

Pros and cons

Pro: Auditing handles complex freight movements and contract rules, not just basic invoice matching.
Pro: Reporting reaches shipment, payment, SKU, accessorial, and general-ledger detail, supporting both operations and accounting.
Pro: Multiple payment rails and a 114-currency network support domestic and international carrier payments.
Pro: Broad integration coverage and customized accrual files can connect freight spend to existing enterprise systems.
Con: Custom pricing and a large-spend orientation make it difficult to justify for smaller or simpler freight programs.
Con: The extensive workflow and integration scope may be unnecessary for teams seeking only basic invoice audit.

Verdict

Choose Cass when freight auditing, accounting integration, detailed accruals, and controlled carrier payments need to operate as one workflow at enterprise scale. Its strongest reason to buy is the combination of complex audit coverage and finance-oriented reporting and payments. Look elsewhere if your freight spend is limited, your processes are simple, or you need pricing you can evaluate without a sales conversation.
