Overview

ELSA Speak is a mobile app for speech practice, with a placement test and personalized review alongside its lessons. It is best suited to learners who want a focused, guided way to work on spoken language rather than a broad language-learning platform. Its free access makes it possible to start without paying, but the two-lesson-per-topic cap means sustained practice points toward an annual Premium subscription.

Key features

Practice and guidance

Speech practice, a placement test, and personalized review give learners a way to begin and revisit their work. Premium adds personalized learning paths, interactive learning games, accent selection, a bilingual AI tutor, and real-time feedback. That combination makes the paid tier more compelling for learners who want direction and feedback, while the free tier is better treated as a limited introduction than a complete practice plan.

ELSA Speak offers one language. That narrow scope suits someone focused on that language, but not a learner looking to switch among several. Lessons are not available offline, so practice depends on being online.

Pricing

The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes the first two lessons of topics. It is a useful way to sample the app, but the per-topic limit restricts how far a learner can progress without upgrading.

ELSA Premium costs 159.99 USD per year, billed annually. It includes personalized learning paths, interactive learning games, accent selection, a bilingual AI tutor, and real-time feedback. The listed seven-day trial offers a short window to assess whether those additions justify the yearly commitment; readers should account for annual billing rather than treat the subscription as a monthly plan. Premium is the fit for regular learners who want those tools, while the free option suits a brief or exploratory start.

Platforms

ELSA Speak is available on Android and iOS, with mobile deployment. Its mobile focus is convenient for phone-based practice, but the lack of offline lessons is a material drawback for commuting or other situations without a connection. Support is offered by email and documentation.

Who it's for

ELSA Speak makes most sense for a learner who wants structured speech practice in its single offered language, values personalized guidance, and is comfortable practicing online. The free tier is appropriate for trying the format; learners planning to use it regularly should weigh the annual Premium price against the value of its feedback and learning tools. It is a weaker match for people seeking offline study or a multi-language app.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free access covers the first two lessons of topics, so learners can sample the app before paying.
Pros: Premium combines personalized paths and real-time feedback with an AI tutor and accent selection, giving regular practice more structure.
Cons: The free plan's two-lesson topic cap limits ongoing use without an upgrade.
Cons: Premium is billed annually at 159.99 USD per year, a substantial commitment for someone still deciding whether the app fits.
Cons: Lessons cannot be used offline, and the app offers only one language.

Alternatives

For a different free starting point, TriTalk offers three scenarios per day, basic pronunciation feedback, limited AI conversations, and community access on its free plan; it may suit learners who prefer scenario-based conversation practice. Speechling is worth considering for its free curriculum, professional voice recordings, voice comparison, and limited coaching across web and mobile.

Speakometer is another free-to-download option with core pronunciation practice. SpeakPal offers daily free conversation practice and 30+ languages across Android, iOS, and web, making it a better fit for learners who want language variety. SpeakCoach AI has a free plan with 30 languages and basic text and voice dialogue, though its free tier excludes certificates, course downloads, and full mock exams.

BoldVoice is a paid alternative without a free plan. InPronunci offers a free first chapter and a Basic plan at 35.00 USD per month. Lucida AI has a free download, with some features requiring a subscription.

Readers comparing categories can also browse Language Pronunciation Apps, AI Language Learning Apps, AI Tutoring Apps, and Language learning apps.

Verdict

Choose ELSA Speak if you want mobile speech practice with guided Premium tools and can commit to online, single-language study. Its strongest reason to buy is the combination of personalized paths and real-time feedback; its clearest reason to look elsewhere is the annual price, especially if the free cap or lack of offline lessons is a deal-breaker.
