Overview

Squid is self-hosted caching proxy software for administrators who want to manage web traffic and cache infrastructure themselves. Its breadth of cache topologies and access controls makes it a strong fit for configurable deployments, but it requires an operator rather than offering a hosted service.

Key features

Squid caches frequently requested pages and objects so they can be served again without another upstream fetch, reducing bandwidth use and improving response times. It handles HTTP, HTTPS, FTP and gopher data, with cache-related protocols including ICP and HTCP. That range suits mixed web and legacy data traffic better than a narrowly focused web-page cache.

Administrators can connect caches in a mesh or hierarchy through parent and sibling links. Squid can also accelerate servers, route content among web servers, and form content clusters for load balancing. These capabilities support more elaborate infrastructure, though they make most sense to teams able to operate a self-hosted proxy stack.

Squid provides extensive access controls and full request logging. Proxy authentication options include Basic, NTLM, Digest and Negotiate, with bundled helpers for LDAP, SQL databases, PAM, RADIUS and Windows domains. Basic authentication is the notable security caveat: it encodes credentials with Base64 rather than encrypting them, leaving them effectively cleartext between browser and proxy. Choose another documented method when that exposure is unacceptable.

Pricing

Squid costs 0.00 USD per free. The free plan lets users download, use and modify the self-hosted software; Squid is distributed under GPL version 2, with some components under compatible open-source licenses. This is a compelling fit for teams prepared to manage deployment themselves. Third-party commercial support may be available, but it is separate from the free software. The project offers documentation, a wiki, bug tracking and mailing lists; direct project contact is not intended for user support.

Platforms

Squid supports Linux, macOS, Windows and self-hosted deployment. It is distributed through operating-system package systems, source releases, GitHub and binary packages for various platforms, including Windows. That flexibility helps operators fit it into existing infrastructure, while the self-hosted model places installation and operation with the user.

Who it's for

Squid is best for administrators building a configurable caching proxy, coordinating multiple caches, or routing and accelerating web-server content. It is less suitable for readers who want a managed proxy service or a simple setup without responsibility for operating the software.

Pros and cons

Broad traffic support: HTTP, HTTPS, FTP and gopher data give Squid room to serve varied caching needs.
Flexible infrastructure: Cache hierarchies, server acceleration, routing and load-balancing clusters support complex self-hosted deployments.
Extensive access controls and logging: Useful for administrators who need to shape and inspect proxy requests.
Self-hosting is required: Teams must provide and manage their own deployment rather than rely on a hosted offering.
Basic authentication exposes credentials: Base64 encoding is not encryption, so another authentication method is preferable when credentials cross the browser-to-proxy connection.

Alternatives

For other proxy options, browse Forward Proxy Software or Proxy Software; for cache-focused tools, see Caching Software.

Choose 3proxy for a free, open-source alternative that supports Linux, macOS, Windows and self-hosting. mitmproxy is another free, open-source choice, described as an interactive HTTPS proxy, with web support as well as desktop and self-hosted platforms. Tinyproxy is a free GPL-licensed option for Linux, macOS and self-hosting.

WinGate offers a Windows-only freemium alternative; its Standard plan is 109.95 USD per month for 6 concurrent users. For a subscription-based secure web gateway, SafeSquid Secure Web Gateway has annual pricing by quote and stops working if not renewed.

Cloudflare Gateway suits readers seeking a broader managed-platform option: its free plan covers 50 users with up to 24 hours of standard log retention. Prisma Access is a paid alternative with custom pricing. Check Point Harmony SASE offers a 30-day trial before a software license is required.

Verdict

Choose Squid if you need a free, self-hosted proxy with broad cache protocols, granular access control and the ability to link caches or direct server content. Look elsewhere if you want a managed service or cannot accept the cleartext credential exposure of Basic authentication.
