Overview

The API combines global messaging with operational features that reduce routine work: it queues messages, selects encoding, splits long texts into multiple messages, and reports delivery status. Developers can also use a debugging tool to investigate deliverability. Those conveniences matter in production, where a message can span parts or fail to reach its destination; they do not remove the need to account for per-part charges and carrier fees.

Telnyx supports two-way SMS, inbound webhooks, MMS, and short codes, as well as 10DLC, toll-free, and alphanumeric sender IDs. Existing numbers can be enabled for SMS and MMS without switching providers. STOP-word replies automatically unsubscribe recipients, a useful safeguard for ongoing messaging workflows.

Key features

Developer access: REST APIs, documentation, and SDKs cover Node.js, Python, Ruby, PHP, .NET, Java, and Go. This is a broad fit for application teams, though the service is not presented as a standalone messaging app for end users.
Global reach: Telnyx says it has numbers in more than 130 countries and supports several sender channels. That range gives developers flexibility across markets, while actual carrier charges vary by destination.
Message handling: Automated queuing, intelligent encoding, concatenation for long SMS, and delivery reports address common messaging edge cases without requiring developers to handle each manually.
Number continuity: Hosted SMS lets existing numbers send and receive SMS and MMS without changing providers, which can suit organizations that want to add messaging to established numbers.
Security: Telnyx states that data is encrypted in transit and at rest, with multi-factor authentication and granular API-key permissions. Its listed certifications and compliance include ISO 27001:2022, ISO 27701:2019, SOC 2 Type II, PCI DSS, and GDPR.
AI coding integrations: Agent Skills support Claude Code, Cursor, and Windsurf. These integrations may suit teams using those coding tools, but they do not change the messaging service’s account limits.

One operational constraint is easy to miss: Level 1 verified accounts may send only 50 outbound messages per day, and pretrial accounts are limited to Telnyx AI products. Messaging requires a full account. The message-retrieval endpoint also reaches back only 10 days, so it is not a long-term message archive.

Pricing

Telnyx has no free plan or free trial. The pricing page shows a $0 platform fee and a starting SMS rate of $0.004 per message part; carrier fees and taxes can vary by destination. Long messages are split into multiple parts, so the starting rate is not necessarily the cost of a complete long text. Automatic volume discounts apply after specified monthly thresholds, with the pay-as-you-go plan noting discounts above 100 million messages per month.

Plan	Price and terms	Best fit
SMS API usage	0.00 USD per month, billed; pay-as-you-go rates before volume tiers, with carrier fees and taxes potentially applying	Teams wanting inbound and outbound programmable SMS at usage rates.
SMS API pay as you go	0.00 USD per month, billed per message part plus carrier fee; $0 platform fee; automatic discounts above 100M messages/month	Usage-driven programs that want automatic discounts at very high volume.
Pay as you go	0.00 USD per month, billed at standard rates; card on file; automatic tier discounts; no contract	Teams that prefer usage billing without a contract.
Committed	500.00 USD per month, billed at discounted usage rates; named account manager, priority support, and higher limits	Organizations prepared to commit monthly in exchange for discounted rates and account support.
Enterprise	5000.00 USD per month, billed at custom enterprise pricing; dedicated infrastructure and IPs, private interconnect, in-region GPUs, and unlimited rate limits	Large-scale deployments that need dedicated infrastructure and higher rate limits.

Telnyx advertises free 24/7 expert support; the pricing page also lists support at $0. The paid tiers are not interchangeable: the $0 monthly options still incur usage and carrier charges, while the $500 and $5,000 monthly tiers add commitments and infrastructure or service benefits. New accounts should factor in the 50-message daily cap for Level 1 verification and the full-account requirement for messaging before treating pay-as-you-go access as an unrestricted test environment.

Platforms

The service is available through API and web. Its SDK coverage is broad, spanning Node.js, Python, Ruby, PHP, .NET, Java, and Go.

Who it's for

Telnyx is a strong fit for developers and organizations building transactional or two-way messaging into products, particularly when delivery reporting, automated opt-outs, number hosting, or several sender types matter. Its broad international reach and usage-based rates also suit teams whose traffic varies. It is less suitable for casual testing that depends on a free trial, or for teams that need unrestricted early sending without account verification limits.

Pros and cons

Pro: Automated encoding, queuing, long-message splitting, delivery reports, and debugging reduce the burden of handling messaging edge cases.
Pro: Support for MMS, inbound webhooks, multiple sender channels, and hosted numbers gives product teams options for building two-way workflows.
Pro: A $0 platform fee and usage-based pricing avoid a platform subscription at entry level, with automatic volume discounts at stated thresholds.
Pro: Free 24/7 support and security controls including encryption, MFA, and granular API-key permissions strengthen the service for operational use.
Con: There is no free plan or free trial, and Level 1 verified accounts are capped at 50 outbound messages per day.
Con: Carrier charges and taxes vary by destination, while long texts incur multiple message-part charges; the $0 platform fee does not mean free messaging.
Con: Message retrieval is limited to messages no older than 10 days, making the endpoint unsuitable as a long-term archive.
Con: The committed and enterprise tiers start at 500.00 USD and 5000.00 USD per month respectively, a meaningful fixed cost for teams that need their added benefits.
