Overview

Buddi is a free budgeting program aimed at people with little or no financial background. Its basic approach is to give users a place to set up accounts and spending categories, record transactions, and review where their money is going. That makes it a straightforward desktop option for organizing everyday finances rather than a tool whose value depends on specialized financial knowledge.

The project dates to 2010 and is licensed under GNU General Public License version 2.0 (GPLv2). The latest listed release is Buddi-3.4.1.14; its stable files are dated 2019-04-03. Those release details matter for anyone weighing a simple budgeting workflow against the need for an actively updated product.

Key features

Buddi's central workflow is account and category setup followed by transaction entry. Once those records are in place, users can check spending habits and consult the project's documented reports. The wiki shows a main reports window, a net worth graph, an income pie graph, and a main budget window. These views provide several ways to look at budget information, from an overall budget to income distribution and net worth.

Import and export options are available through a separate Buddi Plugins project, which lists CSV and QIF plugins. Users working with older Buddi data should note a format distinction: older .buddi files require the Import Legacy Buddi Data plugin rather than the default .buddi3 format. Plugin compatibility can also require attention; a project news post says older plugins may need updated versions or recompilation after a Buddi version change.

The project lists Czech, Dutch, English, French, German, Greek, Italian, Norwegian, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, and Swedish. Support is provided through SourceForge discussion forums and a support section. The project pages do not state security or compliance features, so those needs should be assessed separately rather than assumed.

Pricing

Buddi is free, with a free plan listed at 0.00 USD per free. There is no free trial because the software is offered as a free plan. Its GPLv2 license is relevant for users who also want to understand the terms under which the program is distributed.

Platforms

Buddi is listed for Linux, macOS, and Windows. The project also describes Buddi Live as an online version accessible from mobile devices. Its discussion notes that phones can be difficult to use for this option and that tablets work better, so mobile access should not be treated as an equally convenient substitute for a desktop workflow.

Who it's for

Buddi is most suitable for individuals who want a basic way to organize accounts, categorize expenses, enter transactions, and review their spending without needing a financial background. The stated intended audience also includes end users on desktop systems and people in the financial and insurance industry. Its reporting views may be useful to users who want more than a transaction list, while the plugin-based handling of interchange files and older data may suit people willing to manage a few setup details.

It is less compelling for anyone whose choice depends on recent release activity, clearly documented security or compliance provisions, or frictionless handling of legacy files and plugins. Those points are not established by the listed project information.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free to use, with a simple budgeting purpose aimed at people without financial expertise.
Pros: Supports account and category setup, transaction recording, spending review, and several documented report views.
Pros: Available for Linux, macOS, and Windows, with project resources in multiple languages.
Cons: The latest listed release is Buddi-3.4.1.14, with stable files dated 2019-04-03.
Cons: CSV and QIF transfer options and import of older .buddi files depend on separate plugins.
Cons: Plugin updates or recompilation may be needed following a version change; the project pages do not describe security or compliance features.

Verdict

Buddi offers a clear, free starting point for desktop budgeting: record transactions against accounts and categories, then use its budget and report views to understand spending and financial position. Its broad desktop platform availability and approachable purpose are strengths. The dated latest listed release, plugin dependencies for certain data tasks, and limited stated information about security and compliance are important caveats. It fits users looking for basic budgeting organization who are comfortable with those constraints.
