Overview

Boot-Repair is free Linux software for recovering from common startup problems, including GRUB failures and lost access to Ubuntu or Windows after another operating system is installed. It is best for people trying to regain access to an existing system, particularly those who can seek help if the first repair does not work. Its recommended repair gives users a clear starting point, while its more powerful controls are best left to experienced helpers.

Key features

Recommended repair and diagnosis

Recommended Repair can reinstall GRUB and restore access to operating systems already installed on the PC. That makes Boot-Repair a practical first choice for common boot failures, rather than a tool that leaves users to decide which bootloader changes to try. Boot-Info adds a diagnostic report that users can share by email or on an operating-system support forum, making it useful when the problem needs another pair of eyes.

Advanced recovery controls

Advanced options cover backing up partition tables and boot sectors, changing GRUB settings, restoring a Windows-compatible MBR, and repairing a broken filesystem. This breadth can help when a basic GRUB repair is not enough, but it comes with real risk: the Ubuntu guide warns that changing these options may make the problem worse. Treat them as tools for experienced users or follow a helper’s specific instructions rather than experimenting.

Backups and report privacy

The project describes automatic backups, a useful safeguard when boot-related changes are involved, but it distributes the software without warranty. For Boot-Info, users can choose whether to upload the diagnosis to a pastebin or keep it local. Uploaded reports automatically expire after some days, though the project says they may contain basic system data such as partition labels, UUIDs, and mount points; users who do not want to share that information should keep the report local.

Recovery scope and setup

Boot-Repair can help recover access to Windows and several Linux distributions. It can recover access to any operating system when the PC contains Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, Fedora, OpenSuse, ArchLinux, or a derivative. Users can launch it from Boot-Repair-Disk, which starts the tool automatically and includes OS-Uninstaller and Boot-Info, or install it in an Ubuntu, derivative, Debian, or derivative live environment. This makes it a recovery option to prepare or launch from a live environment, not a Windows app.

Pricing

Boot-Repair is free: the Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and is GNU-GPL licensed software. There is no paid tier or trial to weigh against a free allowance, so its appeal is straightforward for anyone who needs its Linux recovery functions. The trade-off is not a plan limit but the caution required around advanced repairs, alongside distribution without warranty.

Platforms

Boot-Repair is a Linux app with support for BIOS and UEFI systems, multiboot setups, boot-entry editing, and both partition schemes. Its multiplatform operating-system support concerns the systems it can help recover; it is not a Windows app. Windows users who need a native Windows boot-management tool should look at a different option.

Who it's for

Choose Boot-Repair if a Linux live environment is available and a boot failure has blocked access to an existing Linux or Windows installation. Its guided repair and diagnostic report are especially useful when a user can share the report with an operating-system support forum and follow a helper’s advice. It is a poor fit for anyone seeking guaranteed recovery, a native Windows app, or a reason to change advanced boot settings without guidance.

Pros and cons

Pros: Recommended Repair can reinstall GRUB and restore access to installed operating systems, giving common failures a clear first remedy.
Pros: Boot-Info can be kept local or shared for forum or email help, and the project describes automatic backups.
Pros: Advanced recovery options reach beyond GRUB changes to include a Windows-compatible MBR and broken-filesystem repair.
Cons: The Ubuntu guide warns that Advanced options can worsen the problem, so they demand experience or explicit helper guidance.
Cons: The software is distributed without warranty, and uploaded diagnostics may expose basic system details such as UUIDs and mount points.
Cons: It is Linux software launched from a supported live environment or Boot-Repair-Disk, not a native Windows app.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, see Boot Manager Software.

Boot-US is the alternative to consider for Linux and Windows platforms, with a free option for private PCs and public schools and a 24.50 USD once license for Boot-US 4.x.x on one PC.
rEFInd is a free alternative for Linux, macOS, and Windows, with an EFI-based focus and binaries for x86, x86-64, and ARM64.
Clover Bootloader is another free, open-source option for Linux, macOS, and Windows.
Visor Boot Manager is free BSD-2-Clause open-source software for Linux and Windows, self-built from source for UEFI x86_64 or AArch64.
EasyBCD is a freemium Windows alternative with a non-commercial plan.
Super Grub2 Disk is a free alternative for Linux, macOS, and Windows.
Ventoy is a free, open-source bootable USB utility for Linux and Windows.
SYSLINUX is a free alternative for Linux and Windows, licensed under GNU GPL version 2 or later.

Verdict

Boot-Repair is the right choice for Linux users seeking a free, guided route back into an existing installation, especially when Boot-Info can bring a support forum into the repair process. Its main reason to choose is the combination of Recommended Repair and diagnostic reporting; its main reason to look elsewhere is the risk of advanced changes, compounded by the lack of warranty. Keep advanced options for experienced helpers, and choose another tool if you need a native Windows application.
