Overview

Import a Word, Markdown, or plain-text manuscript and Bookmint detects chapters from headings and picks up footnotes. You can edit text in the app as well as format it, making this a focused tool for preparing a book rather than a full writing environment. Google Docs, Pages, and Scrivener files must first be exported to Word, an extra step that may interrupt an author’s workflow.

The maker says processing happens in the browser, manuscripts are never uploaded to a server, and no account is required. That approach will appeal to authors who prefer not to send unpublished work to a server. Activation is saved per browser, so a key must be re-entered on a new computer or browser, though it can be used on any device without a limit.

Key features

Bookmint’s 55 adjustable templates cover fiction, nonfiction, poetry, memoir, cookbooks, and children’s books. Controls for fonts, margins, drop caps, borders, and title pages let authors shape the page without having to start from scratch. The title page studio offers seven layouts and fields for a subtitle, tagline, and publisher.

Live print and ebook previews help show the effect of layout choices before export. Device previews display reflowing pages on phones, e-readers, and tablets, in light, sepia, and night modes. For nonfiction, endnotes, page footnotes, ebook popups, subheadings, callouts, images, and tables of contents support books with more than a straightforward chapter structure.

Print exports include trim, bleed, crop marks, and embedded fonts; the maker says the PDFs are preflighted for KDP and IngramSpark. Bookmint also exports accessible EPUBs and names Kindle, Apple Books, and Kobo among supported ebook stores. That makes it a strong fit for authors preparing both print and digital editions, while the stated integrations are aimed at those publishing through these services.

Pricing

Bookmint uses a freemium model. Beta access costs 0.00 GBP per free and includes all 55 templates and design tools, print PDF and EPUB exports, and unlimited books and saved projects. The free plan’s key compromise is attribution: PDFs carry a “Made with Bookmint” footer, while ebooks carry a colophon. An activation code removes it, and beta activation is free. Paid plans start at £29.99.

Unlimited books and saved projects make the free plan workable for authors preparing multiple titles, but the watermark is a meaningful drawback for finished editions. Authors who need clean exports should use an activation code; those who can accept attribution can use the included exports as they are.

Platforms

Bookmint runs in a web browser. The maker says a key works on any device without a limit, but activation is tied to the browser and must be re-entered when switching browsers or computers.

Who it's for

Bookmint is best suited to independent authors who want adjustable layouts, print and ebook previews, and exports for both formats in one browser-based tool. Its templates and nonfiction features serve a wide range of book types. It is a weaker fit for authors whose working files remain in Google Docs, Pages, or Scrivener, or who need free exports without attribution.

Pros and cons

Pros: 55 adjustable templates and specific typography and page controls give authors options across several book genres.
Pros: Print PDFs and accessible EPUBs, together with previews across devices, support preparation for both print and ebook editions.
Pros: Unlimited books and saved projects on the free beta plan remove project-count caps for authors working on multiple titles.
Cons: Free exports carry Bookmint attribution, which makes them less suitable for final editions without activation.
Cons: Google Docs, Pages, and Scrivener files need conversion to Word before import.
Cons: Activation must be re-entered in a new browser or on a new computer.

Alternatives

Compare book layout software if you want to weigh Bookmint against other tools in the category.

Folio Studio suits authors who want a free desktop or web option with one active project, Classic and Minimal templates, and watermark-free PDF and EPUB exports; its free plan also includes one introductory AI action and one full-page illustration.
Storyloft is a better match for authors who want worldbuilding and AI-assisted conversation alongside manuscript work; its free plan allows one manuscript up to 5,000 words, 10 image credits, and 20 Eddy AI conversations.
Blurb BookWright is worth considering for desktop book design with offline editing, templates, and layout suggestions; its BookWright software plan has no listed price.
Atticus offers writing and formatting tools with EPUB, PDF, and DOCX export plus online and offline access, for authors willing to choose a paid product without a free plan.
Koberger may suit authors who want to format, design, lay out, and preview a book for free, but exporting finished files requires Pro.
Coverfairy is for authors focused on cover creation, with four one-time AI image credits and watermarked cover drafts on its free plan.
typesetting.ai offers a free plan with every tool and output format, structure detection and validation, three adjustments, one credit line, and files kept for 24 hours.
Pressbooks is another web-based option.

Verdict

Bookmint is a strong choice for independent authors who want substantial control over a book’s interior and need both print PDFs and EPUBs from a browser. Its broad template range, device previews, and publishing-oriented exports are the main reasons to choose it. Look elsewhere if your manuscript lives in a format it cannot import directly or if you need clean exports without an activation code.
