Overview

BoardGameGeek is a web resource and community centered on board games and card games. Each game entry can bring together reference information, member ratings, forums, and other game-related material. The site combines that catalog with tools for members to track their own activity and contribute to discussions.

Its coverage also includes tabletop games, wargames, and traditional games. BoardGameGeek was founded in 2000 and is headquartered in Dallas, Texas. It provides API access and lets users export data in XML or CSV, which may be useful for working with catalog information beyond the site itself.

The service says it depends on member support and advertising to cover expenses such as servers, bandwidth, and staff. Its support information names Google Cloud, Amazon Web Services, and Mandrill among its paid services. The privacy policy says Cloudflare helps deliver the websites securely and protect them from malicious traffic.

Pricing

Core site access and registered membership are free. The listed Free plan is free; there is no free trial.

Optional annual support levels add specific perks. Contributions of $15 or more per year include a supporter icon. At $25 or more per year, supporters also receive ad blocking, access to a read feed for past subscriptions, and historical gaming trends. The site describes member contributions and advertising as part of how it pays its operating costs.

Platforms

BoardGameGeek is available on the web, Android, and iOS. Its subject matter spans board games, card games, tabletop games, wargames, and traditional games. The privacy policy states that users must be at least 18 to have an account.

Who it's for

BoardGameGeek suits people who want a detailed reference for tabletop titles alongside community opinion and discussion. It can also serve players who want to organize a virtual collection, record plays, or browse member-made aids and session reports. The Geek Market and member trade activity extend its usefulness to people interested in buying, selling, or trading games within the community.

Its XML and CSV exports and API access may also appeal to users who want structured access to game data. The site is specifically oriented toward tabletop games rather than general-purpose software or character data; character data is not supported.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad tabletop coverage, substantial community contributions, collection and play tracking, member trading, API access, and XML and CSV export are available within one service.
Cons: The account age requirement excludes users under 18 from membership. Ad blocking is a supporter perk rather than part of the free plan, and using the community features requires an account.

Alternatives

For more options in this category, browse our Game Databases list. Depending on the kind of catalog you need, alternatives include LaunchBox and IGDB, as well as Pokémon TCG Card Database or YGOPRODeck for card-game-focused databases. Other titles in the category include RaiderZ Game Database, MobyGames, RAWG, and The Visual Novel Database.

Verdict

BoardGameGeek brings game reference pages, member knowledge, collection management, and play tracking together in a free service focused on tabletop gaming. Its community features and structured data access make it useful to both casual lookups and ongoing cataloging. Consider the account age limit and the distinction between free access and paid support perks when deciding whether its membership features fit your needs.
