Overview

Employees can request leave for HR or a manager to approve, review and acknowledge policies, sign documents, and access current or older documents tied to their own employee record. Access is limited to each employee’s own requests, records and documents, which makes the portal more suitable for shared use than an unrestricted file area.

Requests, signatures and acknowledgements appear on HR’s side in real time. Because the portal works in a browser on phones and tablets as well as computers, employees do not need a separate mobile app to use it. HRDocket says the self-service experience scales from a dozen employees to several thousand; in practice, Growth caps at 50 employees and Business is the plan for larger teams.

Key features

Personal records and documents

Employees can view and download documents associated with their own records, including older paperwork. That gives staff direct access to documents without exposing other employees’ files. For organizations that need staff to find their own paperwork, this is a practical benefit; it is not a substitute for broader HR document management needs beyond the functions described.

Leave, policies and signatures

Staff submit leave requests in the portal, while HR or a manager keeps the approval role. Employees can acknowledge policies and complete signatures without printing. Policy templates, version history and automated reminders support policy administration, while real-time visibility of these actions gives HR a current view of employee responses.

Every paid plan includes audit-grade e-signatures. AI compliance and risk assessment checks are included on Growth, and Business adds advanced compliance workflows. Those compliance tools make the upper tiers more relevant to employers seeking structured checks, but the portal itself does not come with Starter.

Pricing

HRDocket uses a freemium model, with a free tier and paid plans billed monthly or annually. The annual options are billed at the stated lower monthly equivalent, with two months free.

Plan	Price	Limits and inclusions
Free	0.00 USD per free	Up to 1 employee profile, 1 company, 10 AI credits, limited templates and watermarked PDF downloads.
Starter	19.00 USD per month; billed $15.83/mo billed annually ($190)	Up to 15 employees, 120 AI credits/month, 2 companies and 2 custom templates.
Growth	49.00 USD per month; billed $40.83/mo billed annually ($490)	Up to 50 employees, 250 AI credits/month, 3 companies, 5 custom templates and the employee self-service portal.
Business	99.00 USD per month; billed $82.50/mo billed annually ($990)	Unlimited employees, 600 AI credits/month, 4 companies, 7 custom templates and dedicated support.

The Free plan is useful for a single employee profile, but its one-profile cap, limited templates and watermarked downloads make it a poor fit for a functioning team. Starter is the least expensive paid option for up to 15 employees and raises the company and template allowances, but it still does not include the self-service portal. That makes Growth the actual entry point for this product’s central employee-facing workflow.

Growth is the sensible fit for organizations with no more than 50 employees that want portal access and compliance checks. Business is for larger teams or those that need its advanced compliance workflows and dedicated support; its unlimited employee allowance comes with higher price and still caps companies at four. All paid plans include audit-grade signatures. A free trial is offered.

Platforms

HRDocket Employee Self-Service is web-based. Employees can reach the portal from a browser on a phone or tablet as well as a computer, so mobile access does not depend on a separate app.

Who it's for

This is a strong fit for employers that want employees to handle leave requests, policy acknowledgements, signatures and personal document retrieval in one portal, with HR or managers maintaining approval authority. Growth is the natural choice for teams of up to 50 that need the portal; Business suits larger organizations that need unlimited employee capacity and dedicated support.

It is not the right choice for a small team that only needs the Starter plan’s lower-cost features, since that tier excludes the portal. Nor does the free tier serve as a team rollout: it allows only one employee profile and limits templates and PDF downloads.

Pros and cons

Pros

One place for common employee actions: Leave requests, policy acknowledgements, signatures and personal records are gathered in the portal.
Personalized record access: Employees are restricted to their own documents, requests and records, an important separation in a shared system.
Useful mobile reach: Browser access on phones and tablets avoids requiring a separate app for employee access.
Paid-plan signature controls: Audit-grade e-signatures are included across all paid plans, not just the highest tier.

Cons

Portal access starts at Growth: Starter may suit a small employer’s budget, but it does not include the defining self-service experience.
Free is highly constrained: One employee profile, limited templates and watermarked PDFs limit its usefulness beyond an individual preview.
Growth has a firm employee ceiling: Teams over 50 need Business, a substantial step up from Growth.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, browse HR Policy Management Software or HR Knowledge Base Software.

Accedo may fit teams looking for a free policy tool with room for up to 25 users and 10 active policies; its free tier lacks groups, scheduled reminders, analytics and audit logs.

Akcepta is worth considering if self-hosting is important or a free tier limited to one active policy and document metadata meets the need; its free plan does not support employee sending.

Firmis is an option for teams that want a free starter tier covering up to five policies, one compliance framework and ten team members, with basic version control and PDF export.

Policyflow is a stronger fit for a policy-focused free tier: it covers up to 15 employees with unlimited policies, version history and audit-ready exports, without a time limit or card requirement.

Keelstar is an alternative for buyers comparing policy and compliance tools.

Corethix Policies is a paid alternative with Android, iOS and web support and a free trial.

NEOGOV Insight is a paid option for organizations seeking a product with customized pricing based on selected products and agency size.

Diligent Audit is a paid alternative with Android, iOS, web and API platforms.

Verdict

Choose HRDocket Employee Self-Service if you want employees to manage leave requests, policy responses, signatures and their own records through one browser portal, while HR retains approvals and visibility. The main reason to choose it is the combination of personal record access and real-time employee workflows; the main reason to look elsewhere is that the portal requires Growth at 49.00 USD per month, even when a smaller team would otherwise fit Starter.
