Overview

LiveSchool gives K–12 schools a shared system for logging behavior and connecting it to points, rewards, and family access. Its emphasis on positive reinforcement makes it a stronger fit for school-wide culture programs than for teams seeking only classroom monitoring.

Schools pay for staff accounts, while parents, guardians, and students can use the service free. The 10-staff minimum and 12-month term make it a commitment for schools, not a lightweight individual-teacher purchase.

Key features

Behavior and recognition

Behavior tracking, incident tracking, positive reinforcement, and PBIS and SEL program support put both conduct records and recognition in the same platform. House Points and a rewards store add ways to organize incentives; student shopping is reserved for Premium. Schools that want these elements as part of a broader positive-culture approach have a coherent set of tools, while Starter’s cap of 10 behaviors and one alert can constrain a program that needs more room.

Hall passes and family access

Hall passes are included with Premium, not Starter. Family engagement is a core capability, and free parent, guardian, and student access avoids charging those users separately. That division keeps the subscription focused on school staff, though schools still need at least 10 paid staff seats.

Rosters, security, and support

Clever and ClassLink support roster synchronization and single sign-on; Clever also supports OneRoster files. These integrations can simplify account setup for schools already using those systems. Live chat, phone, and email support from former educators is included on every plan on school days, 9 a.m.–5 p.m. CST.

LiveSchool states that it complies with FERPA and COPPA and receives an annual third-party audit of its security, privacy, and operational controls. It encrypts behavioral data in transit with TLS 1.2+ and at rest with AES-256, and uses role-based access controls. Student records are deleted by default within 60 days after service ends, subject to legal or data-sharing requirements.

Pricing

LiveSchool has a free school-year Pilot and paid per-staff plans, but every subscription requires at least 10 staff and a 12-month minimum term. The displayed annual totals are calculated for 40 staff, so smaller schools should not assume those totals override the minimum-seat requirement.

Pilot: 0.00 USD per free, billed as a school-year pilot. It includes all features, SSO and rostering, and one grade level for up to one school year. It is a useful limited-scope evaluation, but it is restricted to one grade and does not replace a full-school subscription.
Starter: 1960.00 USD per year, billed at $49/staff/year for 40 staff. It includes SSO and rostering, up to 10 behaviors, one behavior alert, basic reports, and standard support. This is the lower-cost paid option for schools that can work within those behavior and alert limits; it gives up Premium’s unlimited behaviors and alerts, student shopping, all reports, and hall passes.
Premium: 3960.00 USD per year, billed at $99/staff/year for 40 staff. It adds unlimited behaviors and alerts, student shopping, all reports, hall passes, and premium support alongside SSO and rostering. Schools using a broader rewards program or needing passes and more reporting headroom have a clearer case for the higher rate.
District: custom pricing. It includes Premium features plus SOC 2 compliance, data integration, a district dashboard, and enterprise support, making it the plan aimed at district-wide needs.

Who it's for

LiveSchool suits K–12 schools and districts that want behavior records, recognition, family engagement, and roster integration in one system. It is particularly well matched to schools already using Clever or ClassLink and to teams with a defined positive-behavior program. The staff minimum, annual term, and Starter limits make it less suitable for a single teacher, a small pilot that must cover the whole school, or a school seeking an unrestricted lower-cost paid tier.

Pros and cons

Pro: Families and students use the service free, while schools pay for staff accounts, keeping family participation outside the staff-seat charge.
Pro: Clever and ClassLink roster synchronization and single sign-on can reduce account-management friction for schools on those systems.
Pro: Security controls include encryption, role-based access, annual third-party audits, and default student-record deletion within 60 days after termination.
Con: The 10-staff minimum and 12-month term limit its fit for small or short-term deployments.
Con: Starter allows only 10 behaviors and one alert, so schools needing broader behavior or alert coverage must consider Premium.
Con: The free Pilot covers one grade level for up to one school year, rather than serving as an unrestricted free tier.

Verdict

Choose LiveSchool if your K–12 school or district wants behavior tracking tied to positive recognition, family access, and established roster integrations. Its strongest reason to buy is the combination of school-wide behavior and rewards tools with free family accounts; its strongest reason to look elsewhere is the 10-staff, 12-month commitment, compounded by Starter’s limited behaviors and alerts.
