Overview

Blender is a desktop suite for building 3D assets and carrying them through animation, visual effects and rendering. It suits creators who want several production stages in one application and are prepared to work with a broad toolset.

Its clearest advantage is that the suite is free and open source, with commercial use permitted for artists’ work. That breadth is also a poor fit for someone who only needs a narrowly focused tool.

Key features

Modeling and sculpting

Blender combines mesh editing, full N-Gon support, modifiers, UV unwrapping and mesh painting with 20 sculpting brush types, multi-resolution sculpting, dynamic topology and mirrored sculpting. That makes it possible to move from shaping a model to sculpting and UV work in one application; users seeking a more specialized workflow may find the range excessive.

Animation, 2D drawing and effects

Rigging and animation tools include a pose editor, non-linear animation, forward and inverse kinematics, constraints, drivers, shape keys and sound synchronization. Blender also allows drawing in a 3D viewport and combining 2D with 3D. For effects work, camera and object tracking, masking and live scene previews extend the same project into tracked footage.

Rendering and custom tools

Cycles is a ray-trace-based production renderer with CPU and GPU rendering, support for multiple GPUs, PBR shaders, HDR lighting and VR rendering. Real-time viewport preview helps users assess a scene while working, while the choice of CPU and GPU rendering gives more than one route to a final image.

A Python-controlled interface and API let advanced users build specialized tools and add-ons, including their own, while community add-ons offer another way to extend the application. Blender’s pipeline also reaches simulation, compositing, motion tracking, video editing and game asset creation, so it can serve more than modeling or animation alone.

Working offline and learning

Blender can run without installation or an internet connection, even from a USB stick or desktop folder, and downloading it does not require registration. Remote asset libraries can supply online assets when needed. Free training from Blender Studio artists, including an Animation Fundamentals chapter, gives new users a learning resource, alongside the manual, documentation, tutorials and community forums.

Pricing

Blender: 0.00 USD per free. The plan is a free, open-source 3D creation suite that can be downloaded without registration and used without an internet connection. There is no free trial because the software itself is free; there are no paid tiers or seat limits to weigh against a cheaper plan.

Blender is distributed under the GNU GPL, which permits use, distribution, study and modification. If you distribute a modified version, you must publish its source. Artists own creations made with Blender and may use them commercially. Those terms make it a strong fit for creators who want control over their tools, but anyone distributing a modified Blender version should understand the source-publication obligation.

Platforms

Blender is available as desktop software for Linux, macOS and Windows. It also runs without installation, which is useful for a portable setup, but it is not a mobile or web-based option.

Who it's for

Blender fits artists, animators and asset creators who need modeling, sculpting, rigging, rendering or visual-effects tools together, as well as advanced users who want to customize workflows with Python. Its offline use and free training also suit people who want to work without an account or a constant connection.

It is less compelling for someone who needs only a focused modeling or avatar tool, or who specifically wants a browser or mobile workflow. Blender’s range is valuable when projects cross disciplines; it can be unnecessary overhead for a single narrow task.

Pros and cons

Broad production coverage: Modeling, sculpting, animation, rendering, compositing, tracking and video editing live in one suite, reducing the need to split a varied 3D project across specialized stages.
No purchase barrier: The software is free and open source, and artists can use their Blender-made work commercially.
Works offline and portably: No registration or internet connection is needed to download and use it, and it can run from a USB stick or folder.
Extensible for technical users: The Python API supports custom tools and add-ons, though that advantage is most useful to users comfortable with scripting.
GPL terms need attention when redistributing modifications: Distributing a modified version requires publishing its source, a condition users should account for if they plan to share altered software.
More scope than a focused task may warrant: Its many production areas can be unnecessary for people who only need one specialized tool.

Alternatives

For a different balance of platform reach or specialization, consider these options:

Blockbench is another free option, with desktop, mobile and web platforms listed; it is worth considering if access beyond desktop matters.
MetaPerson Creator offers a free first avatar and export, with additional avatars using in-app credits; choose it if a first avatar is the immediate goal.
Meshy has a free tier capped at 100 credits and 10 free monthly downloads for Meshy 6 Lite models, plus a $20.00 USD per month Pro plan. That quota-based option may suit someone whose needs fit its free-download limit.
MakeHuman is free, with no license fees or paywall; consider it as another no-cost desktop option.
Genies Avatar SDK is free for developers and end users, and commercial projects may use it for free; it is an alternative to consider for SDK-oriented work.
VRoid Studio is free on iOS, macOS and Windows and includes VRM export; it may suit someone seeking that export option.
ZBrush offers a free iPad plan with 28 brushes and a subscription plan with multi-resolution mesh editing; consider it if an iPad sculpting option is the priority.
Daz Studio is free with a required account and free starter content, with a $18.98 USD per month Premier plan; it may suit users who want a free starting point with included content.

Verdict

Choose Blender if you want a free, capable desktop suite that can carry a project across modeling, animation, effects and rendering, with room to customize it through Python. Look elsewhere if your job is narrowly defined or you need a mobile or web app rather than desktop software.
